About the property

Cottage in Rhulen, Nr. Hay-on-Wye , Powys, Wales - Quiet Backwater Hamlet On Edge Of Moorland, 10 Miles From Hay-on-wye

Rhulen is a minute hamlet about half way between Hay-on-Wye and Builth Wells. Our part of the village contains a tiny 12th Century church, which has a service once a month, and four cottages, two new and two, including Bridge End, quite old – it is thought to have been built at the end of the 18th Century as a roadman’s cottage. The cottage was extended and modernised about thirty years ago and has recently been extensively redecorated. Rhulen is remote and isolated, deep in hill farming country and almost at the head of one of the valleys which run down into the Wye. The lane outside the front door sees very few cars each day, mostly tractors and not many of them. Rhulen is indescribably quiet and tranquil – except at lamb-weaning time. It lies at the foot of moorland hills watched over by circling buzzards and kites. The countryside is beautiful and it is a wonderful place to walk. The cottage has a steep garden running down to a stream.

About James Flecker

Mary and James are retired schoolteachers and this cottage in Wales has been the place where our family spent virtually all its holidays and half terms, from the time they were very young till they left home. Now our daughters frequently take their young families to stay in their old holiday home.

James Flecker purchased this cottage in 1970

Why James Flecker chose Builth Wells

We were working at a school in Wiltshire and wanted a holiday home which was not more than three hours away and in a very remote area with excellent walking and scenery. In those days you would be unlikely to see more than a oouple of tractors and still there is very little traffic and the lambs in spring play in the field by our garden just the way they did all those years ago.

What makes this cottage unique

Peace and tranquillity. Excellent walks. The book shops of Hay-on-Wye are only 10 miles away.
