About the property

Farmhouse in Cartigny L'Epinay, Calvados, Normandy, France - Peaceful Location, Beautiful Night Skies, Within Easy Reach Of Towns, Beaches And Countryside

We purchased our farmhouse 26 years ago and have gradually renovated it to provide a light, spacious, comfortable home. It sits on it's own at the end of a single track lane in the Calvados countryside but within easy driving distance of many local attractions. The area provides opportunities for sightseeing (landing beaches, museums, Bayeux with the cathedral and tapestry, numerous towns and villages etc.), walking and cycling in the beautiful countryside, swimming and sporting activities at Omaha beach and along the coast, sampling the local produce, and ample time for simply relaxing.

About Viki Burnage

We bought 'Talvast' as a family home in 1991 when our children were very young (0 to 5 years). We all really enjoyed our visits, particularly during the long summer holidays. And we still enjoy visiting, as do they, along with family and friends as often as we can.

'Talvast' is owned by Cath, Phil and Viki who are pictured here, left to right with Viki's niece (between Cath and Phil) enjoying a sunny walk along the cliffs at Omaha beach. Cath, Phil and Viki have been great friends for....well longer than we care to mention!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a lovely break thank you. We all thought the house was lovely and the kids really enjoyed the barn when we got back from days out. Great location too, within striking distance of everything you want to see in Normandy.

Great for Kids and History Lovers

  • 5 of 5

The house was wonderful! We had a very nice stay. The kids LOVED the backyard and the ability to run around and make noise without disturbing neighbors. There were several nice touches as well like the welcome basket that truly made it special. All the major historical sites were less than 30 minutes away. We made some wonderful memories. Thank you for opening up your home to us.

A re-visit to one of our favourite places!

  • 5 of 5

So, we recently had our fourth visit to Talvast and every time is as enjoyable as the last. This time we went on our own with friends joining us a few days into our stay (4 adults and 4 children - who really enjoyed sharing the dorm room). The amount of space in and around the house is great - if you want to stay put for the day there is plenty to do inside and out. And if you want peace and quiet, there's plenty of that to be had as well, the house is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Loads to do in area as well - spoilt for choice. Thanks Viki, Cath and Phil, a lovely time as always, we'll undoubtedly be back.

The is a well-equipped family home, with lots of space and lots of things to entertain the kids! Lovely peaceful setting as well, we'd thoroughly recommend this to anyone, it is a very handy distance from Cherbourg and Caen ferries too.

Lovely Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We came to stay in this lovely home for a long weekend with my in-laws over Easter. It was so quiet and peaceful! We were close to many of the Normandy/WWII sites and our children loved the yard! They played for hours every evening on the swing set, played ball, ping pong etc! The home is very comfortable and equipped with everything you need! If you want a countryside experience this is a great spot!

Fruits de Mers et soleil

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in this lovely cottage with my sister-in-law. Whilst the cottage easily copes with a whole house party, it felt perfectly cosy for just the two of us. The property is very well equipped and comfortable and offers perfect seclusion without being too far from supermarkets and tourist attractions. The outdoor space is great with a sunny patio for meals outdoors and masses of play equipment for children and adults. There are plenty of books and DVDs and a box of info about local places to go and things to see and do. So you can relax in the cottage and garden or explore the local region.

The countryside is beautiful and visiting the Overlord Museum and the American Cemetry was very moving. Afterwards, we drove up the coast to Grand Campes where we had a delicious lunch at the Restaurant La Maree, overlooking the marina.

Further afield, we drove to Calcone to visit the Mussel Farm. This proved to be impressive in its scale, stretching from horizon to horizon when seen from the viewing point just outside the town. We happened to find a gem of a restaurant, La Ferme des Nielles, http://www.bretagne-coquillages.com/restaurant.html#_=_ , just before arriving in Calcone and dined on delicious oysters and mussels selected from their incredible seafood display.

Brilliant week

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely lovely. A family of four and a family of three had lots and lots of space. The boys of 9 had loads to do, football, pool, table tennis, general messing about. 15 year old daughter had own room, very happy. The cottage has absolutely everything you need, the pictures don't do the location and property justice. It really is beautiful, the owners have spent a lot of care and time making this into an idyllic spot to rest and relax. We could of easily spent our whole time at the cottage. However we made good use of the location, visiting D-day beaches, Bayeux tapestry, day in Paris. The cinema at Gold beach and the remains of mulberry harbour can not be recommended enough.

In the cottage is a menu for L'Authentique, a restaurant in Le Molay Littry, do yourselves a favour and go, it made our last evening really wonderful. Food and service top notch. Three course meal, two bottles of good wine, drinks for the kids - 7 people (4 adults 3 children) - 167 euro! Worth every cent. Half the fun is finding it.

Talvast was really lovely, and we are looking forward to staying again in the future. Cathy is really helpful, and very patient with any queries you may have.
