Domaine des Balagyeres is in the beautiful village of Saint Andre D'allas which is only a 5 minute drive to Sarlat, yet situated in a fantastic peaceful rural location surrounded by meadows and woodlands. The property has a large solar heated swimming pool (18m x 7.5m), also a sauna and jacuzzi (solar heated) are available to all guests. Ideally situated to visit the many chateaux, gardens and caves. There is also a lot of beaches and canoeing stations positioned on the Dordogne river which is only 15 minutes drive away. We are close to other quaint villages such as La Roque-Gageac, Beynac and bastides such as Domme.
I had been in the same job for nearly 30 years, Estelle,my wife was made redundant from her position working in a charity for people who were disabled or had learning difficulties.
It seemed the appropriate time to change our lives, so we moved to France in January 2010. This included 3 cats and 40 Koi carp. We have 2 sons, Callum came with us to help with the maintenance of the gites. Our eldest son stayed in England because he's a qualified offshore surveyor.
Our new life style has been wonderful, the people are friendly and the pace of life is so much better. Our feedback from our guests who have stayed with us has been very complimentary and many want to return. Our aim is for everyone who visits us, to enjoy it so much that they will want to return to this beautiful part of France.
Estelle Essex purchased this cottage in 2009
We have been coming to area on holiday for many years and when we were viewing properties to purchase, we fell in love with Domaine des Balagyeres. We love our home because it is very quiet with it's beautiful countryside yet only 5 minutes from the pretty and medieval city of Sarlat with many other interesting places to visit. Domaine des Balagyeres is in a location that is very quiet, when you wake up in the mornings all you will hear are the birds singing.
We have just installed solar panels (November 2011) to heat the swimming pool and jacuzzi to help make your stay more pleasurable.
We have adopted three pigmy goats in September 2012 who are very gentle and friendly, they have now extended their numbers to 5 with the arrivals of two babies in March 2013. This adds an additional amusement for children or adults to help feed the chicken and to pet and feed our goats.
We are ideally situated in the Dordogne for you to visit and explore the many attractions and beautiful rivers and countryside.
Sarlat offers a wealth of culture with it's many restaurants, cafes, shops and markets.
If anyone in your family will be celebrating a birthday, we would be more than happy to bake a cake as a surprise to that person, just let us know.
We stayed at the end of August for ten nights, as a family of 4, and had a brilliant holiday. Our boys loved everything, but especially the goats, chicken and sheep, who were very well fed the time we were there I suspect! Ian and Estelle were friendly and helpful during our stay and able to answer questions we had about the surrounding area. Our gite was clean and did the job perfectly for our stay. The pool was lovely and we also enjoyed using the jacuzzi, with its amazing view. The highlight has to be how quiet and peaceful it is, we loved hearing the owls at night and spotting shooting stars, as it was so dark. It was a perfect holiday in a perfect location, and we would totally recommend staying here if you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday surrounded by nature
This is great property - we can't recommend it highly enough. Ian and Estelle are wonderful hosts and we had a great two week holiday with them.
The gites themselves are clean and comfortable, perfectly sited to give you privacy while allowing you to easily socialise with families in the neighbouring gites. We really enjoyed the company of our French neighbours and so did our little boy.
There is a lovely pool too and lots of space for children to play as well as the endless attraction of the goats, sheep and chickens.
Ian and Estelle looked after us so well. When we asked them to recommend a restaurant to celebrate Nikki's birthday, Estelle insisted on baking her a cake and bringing it over on the big day! So kind and generous.
The area is stunning; isolated and peaceful and yet just a few kilometres from Sarlat and within easy reach of all the sites and towns of the Dordogne. If you're a birdwatcher or enjoy nature you'll be in heaven.
We had a wonderful holiday. We didn't want to come home and will definitely return one day.

The site is in a beautiful location on the edge of a small village. It feels remote but it only took about 15 minutes to drive to the supermarket in Sarlat and the many tourist sites near to the Dordogne river. The home was very clean and comfortable and despite the heat wave (over 40 degrees some days) we were not too hot at night. This part of the Dordogne is spectacular with chateaus and medieval villages round every corner. The hilltop gardens of Marqueyssac are well worth a visit especially when the paths are lit by candles one evening a week in the summer.
The pool was a great size, keeping our children entertained for hours whilst the hot tub was a blessed relief after a long drive from Calais. There was a nice mix of both English and French families during our two weeks which helped our children improve their French, although not necessarily the adults'!
A car is absolutely essential; we took our bikes but didn't realise the steepness of the hills in the area. I braved the cycle to the boulangerie on one day; 25 minutes to get there, less than 5 to get back!
The owners were a great mix of friendly and helpful without being at all intrusive. However, the goats were our favourite and were the perfect answer to the perennial question of what to do with day-old French baguettes.
We would definitely return to this area and to this site as despite spending a fortnight here there is still plenty more for us to do. It would be a great place for a group of families or friends to stay, but please don't book the dates we might want!
