House With Shared Pool And Large Grounds

Updated: 24-Nov-2015
House in Fa, Limoux / Quillan, LAude, Limoux, Languedoc Rousillon, France - Village Location, Beautiful Countryside For Walking Or Cycling On Your Doorstep

We are delighted to welcome you to our holiday home in the village of Fa. Set in the foothills of the Pyrenees, close to the famous Rennes le Chateau and Rennes les Bains, south of Carcassonne, we offer a comfortable and spacious gite, with 3 bedrooms with a large lounge and well appointed kitchen. There is a barbeque terrace and private off-road parking and a small private garden giving access to the larger grounds, where the swimming pool and pool house are to be found. The village of Fa is sited at the foot of a hill topped by the ruins of a Visigoth tower. The history of the village goes back further - to Roman times, with the remains of Roman baths and villas evident along the valley running west towards the neighbouring village of Rouvenac. This is also an excellent hunting ground for fossils, which are easily spotted by the sides of the footpaths. There is a lively cafe in the village which serves as depot du pain in the mornings and has a very good menu lunchtimes and evenings.

About the Owner

We are a family of four who decided to relocate in 2004 from our busy city life in Brighton to the quiet rural life of the village of Fa in the Aude. Our two children attend local secondary schools and are fully bi-lingual. We still travel between England and France for business purposes, but are full time residents here in Fa. As we concentrate on building our holiday rental business here we aim to travel less to the UK.

We take full advantage of the outdoor activities available on our doorstep, skiing in winter, canoeing and messing about on the water in the summer. This is a great walking and cycling in area, the Tour de France passes by each year. We love the relaxed pace of life in this quiet corner of France that has so much to offer visitors to the region.

From the Owner

This area of France has great travel links, with airports serving all parts of the UK in easy distance, a very important consideration for us when choosing a place for the gites, but also for our travel to and from the UK. From here we can go skiing in the winter, go to the beach in the summer and visit Spain for a change of pace and language! You can walk in any direction from the village, following the marked routes and be completely surrounded by countryside, fields of sunflowers and vines, with not a soul in sight. It is particularly lovely in Spring and Autumn as there are fewer tourists and without the scorching heat of the sun walking and cycling through the beautiful countryside can be enjoyed to the maximum.

Further Details:

There are excellent local markets where you will find local produce for sale. The neighbouring village of Espéraza has a supermarket, banks and post office as well as the newly extended Dinosaur museum, this being and area rich in dinosaur remains. There is also the Musée du Chapelerie, the Hatmaking Museum, a remnant of the industrial heyday of the region which was famous for hat shoe and glove making. All now sadly gone.

Rennes le Chateau is a few kilometres away. Made famous by the books The Holy Blood the Holy Grail, the Dan Brown book The DaVinci Code and the books by Kate Mosse Laberynth and Sephulcre. There are guided tours in the summer months explaining the mysteries surrounding this beautiful hilltop village. Rennes-les-Bains and Alet-les-Bains are two thermal spa towns dating back to Roman times. The swimming pools are naturally heated mineral water, leaflets with further information are to be found in the gite. Puivert Chateau, Museum and lake - The chateau at Puivert is the mearest Cathar castle to Fa. About 10km away, it sits atop the hill overlooking the village of Puivert and its leisure lake. This is a swimming lake with sandy beach area and snack bar, a pleasant day can be spent sunbathing and swimming here. There are often night markets held during the summer when local wine and produce can be tasted.

Local towns - Limoux, Quillan, Chalabre, Mirepoix - All these towns have interesting markets, the Mirepoix market on Monday mornings being the most attractive. The towns have museums, chateaux, churches, medieval buildings and are all picturesque with plenty of cafés, restaurants, banks, shops and supermarkets. On market days they can be very busy.

The river Aude provides spectacular opportunities for white water rafting, canoing, canyoning and hydospeed. There is also excellent trout and salmon fishing on the Aude and Ribenty rivers and their many tributaries. We will be happy to help with the booking of any activities.

From the Owner

Although we are to be found in the center of the village we have a very large garden, giving a feeling of space without complete isolation. You can walk through the garden to collect your croissants and baguette from the mobile boulangerie in the morning, or sit in the village cafe and enjoy a coffee and pain au chocolat on the terrace overlooking the river. Ideal as a base for visiting the numerous attractions nearby, but with the gardens and swimming pool, also a lovely place to kick back and laze around in the glorious sunshine of the summer! In Spring and Autumn the weather is ideal for cycling and walking, both excellent in this region.
