Well-equipped 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with fabulous rural views

If you’re looking for a secluded and peaceful holiday destination in the famously idyllic Dordogne department of France, then look no further. Marou is a stone farmhouse, beautifully but tastefully restored with its own private swimming pool, nestling in a wooded valley 6 kilometres from the ancient town of Villefranche-du-Perigord.

Off the beaten track at the end of a private road Marou is still within easy reach of the cultural centres of this department and the neighbouring Lot with easy access to a profusion of hilltop medieval villages, fairytale castles, prehistoric cave paintings and bastide towns. Venture out to experience the rich history of this wonderful area or simply enjoy soaking up the sun in the lovely garden, planning your next gastronomic outing over a drink on the terrace and enjoying the pastoral quiet.

Delightfully situated in mixed woodland - chestnut, oak and pine - and meadows, the house is detached, south facing, typical of the area but with all 21st century features such as washing machine, microwave, wifi and hifi. There are many cookbooks, fiction and non-fiction books.

Marou offers complete privacy, a perfect base for relaxing or activity holidays.

Nearby Villefranche du Perigord is a bastide (fortified medieval) town dating from the 13th century with a covered market, square, and all facilities for shopping including 2 small supermarkets, a delicatessen, 2 bakeries, a butcher’s, a hardware store, cafés and English newspapers. It also has a tennis court, a boules court, a swimming pool and in the season a cinema with some English language films. Prayssac, 20 minutes away has 2 supermarkets and there are hypermarkets in Fumel and Cahors both less than an hour’s drive as are the river Dordogne (great canoeing) and the vineyards of the Lot valley.

About Gail Romanes

This is the most beautiful area of rural France we'd ever visited, so when we decided to buy a holiday home in France we only looked in the Perigord Noir, on borders of the Lot region. We try and visit 2 to 3 times a year, and enjoy working in the garden, going to the farmers' markets on summer's evenings, eating out, shopping in the markets and lounging around reading, eating and drinking. We swim in the pool a lot, as it's so refreshing - not being chlorinated. And do as much walking as possible. When friends come to stay we sightsee - and there are so many breathtakingly beautiful places to see that we really are spoilt for choice, and still, after all these years, we find new places to visit.

Why Gail Romanes chose Villefranche-du-Périgord

We love the Perigord Noir. Our house is quite secluded and the countryside is some of the most beautiful we've ever seen. Endless forests, inhabited by deer, wild boar, and much other wildlife. There is plenty to do, including canoeing, visiting prehistoric caves, castles etc. There really is something for everyone here. The area is easily accessible with Bergerac and Brive airports within 1.5 hours away and Toulouse and Bordeaux about 3 hours. The main motorway (A10) is 1 hour away. Train stations are also nearby, with car hire available.

What makes this house unique

The property is deep in the countryside, surrounded by woods and fields. This is one of the best places in Europe, if not the World to spot wild flowers. Due to the lack of any heavy industry, small-scale agriculture and very low population, the Lot and Dordogne have an abundance of wild flowers all along our hedgerows, gardens and woodland. Near our house we have seen Tassel Hyacinths and other wild orchids, and carpets of cowslips. The local town (which is a medieval 'bastide' town) is just 5 minutes away for fresh bread and all you need.There are restaurants within a short drive - most quite rustic, with duck featuring on many menus.

I hope you are well and had a good week, sorry I missed your call I had my phone off for the week and only picked your email up later yesterday.

Firstly I would like to thank you both so much for a truly amazing holiday. Marou is a very special place and your hard work over the year’s shows in a much loved house.

XXXXX and I had a fantastic time, Marou now has a place in both our hearts and it was hard to leave yesterday. The weather was great too and the surrounding areas are just idyllic.

Once again I can’t thank you enough for Marou and the love you have put into it.

With regards to the cleaner, everything looked very clean and tidy so no issues there.

Both XXXXX and I would like to book in for next year (around the same time), if this is OK for you I will look at some dates?

Incredible holiday in this beautiful house

This house is probably the nicest house we have ever stayed in. It's a very traditional house in the style of many of the old houses in the area but it has been renovated, decorated and furnished to a very high standard whilst still feeling homely and welcoming. The pool is gentle salt water and large enough for a big family to use. Very quiet, peaceful surroundings but close enough to the main town to leave the car and walk. The surrounding towns and villages are all must sees and the house is perfectly placed to enjoy them. Wholeheartedly recommended.

Marou - Simply Amazing!

Both my husband and I have been coming to Marou for the past few years now. We always have an amazing time away. This year was no different, the house and garden was as wonderful as always. Gail & Alistair's hard work and devotion to making the house so wonderful clearly shows.

It has been a year of much change for both Adam and I, the trip brought us closer together and renewed our sense of love. Not only with each other but also France and specifically Marou, for that we are so very grateful for.

To have the space to relax and re-connect with the other is so important for us, the care & love for Marou has helped us do this.

My advice to anyone wishing to do the same is; simply book and experience the wonder of Marou.

Gorgeous house and garden in idyllic countryside

The house is beautifully done with some great art work on the walls and shelves of books to peruse. Sitting out on any of the patio areas is such a pleasure and the pool is wonderful to use in the relaxed and peaceful setting.

There are great places to eat all round the area and some really lovely walks. It's a very beautiful bit of France to stay in.

Great to be back again

It's been a couple of years since our last stay, the garden is looking even lovelier and as always we enjoyed the peace and quiet lying by the pool. We badly needed a break from obsessing over frantic preparations for our daughter's wedding at home next month, and as always Marou didn't disappoint!

A treat to stay there!

My husband and I have stayed at Marou several times, each time returning to find the place even more lovely, inside and out.

The listing is very accurate as to location and amenities. The kitchen is well-equipped, and the beds very comfortable with good choice of blankets.

There is abundant information in the house about local activities, such as golf, windsurfing and horseback riding. Good restaurants and beautiful countryside in the area.

The property is very clean, including the pool (some people may especially appreciate that in the owners do not use chlorine). The gardens are lovingly maintained, and the outdoor dining takes advantage of them.

Gail is a very responsive, helpful and fun person to deal with.

We have recommended Marou to others and feel confident that they would really enjoy it if they went.

Evening Farmers' market at nearby Loubejac (3km) must be done. Don't eat first as local farmers serve food, wine etc. Can also buy local produce.
