About the Owner

We bought the old farmhouse at Kersalut in 2005 and spent two years renovating it while also exploring the area and looking after our young family.

"Fantastic base for the area. Visited the beach every day, Kerou being our favourite. Great markets with super-fresh produce and had a great time at a local festival, great atmosphere. Thanks for a lovely stay x." Jane, Surrey.

From the Owner

After spending family holidays in Brittany as a child, it was always a dream of mine to eventually own a holiday home there. After a lot of hard work and saving (and making it become my husband's ambition too), our dream became a reality. We chose this part of south Brittany for the ease of access from the UK, the fantastic beaches and cliff walks, the huge variety of things to do from forest walks, river and sea kayaking, exploring the pretty villages and of course the fantastic array of food. We have loved learning about the local Breton traditions and getting to know the locals, who have been so welcoming.

Activity and Interests

The Blue Flag beaches at Le Pouldu are about 5 minutes' drive away and are excellent, with white sand, rockpools, great surf (there is a surf school at Kerou beach) and sea kayaking. The Blue Flag beaches at Kerfany and Trenez are 20 mins drive away and from Trenez you can walk across to the WW2 German gun emplacement at low tide. Kerfany has a playground next to the beach. The coastal paths are spectacular with breathtaking views, coves, cliffs, interesting plants and plenty of birdwatching.

The nearest ferry port is Roscoff (2hr drive). St Malo (2.5hr drive), Caen and Cherbourg (both 4hr drive) are also an easy drive on excellent roads.

The nearest airport is Brest (1hr) with seasonal flights from Southampton, Birmingham and Manchester and all year from Luton. Rennes (2hr) has seasonal flights from Birmingham, Manchester, Exeter and Edinburgh and all year from Southampton. Nantes (2.5hr) has flights from Leeds, Nottingham East Midlands, London City and Gatwick.

Kersalut is located between the villages of Clohars-Carnoët and Moëlan-sur-Mer, about 2km from each.

Further Details:

The closest supermarket is in Moëlan-sur-Mer, about 5 mins by car. In Clohars-Carnoët there are boulangeries/patisserie, charcuterie, butcher, bar, shops, chemist, 2 banks with ATMs, take away pizzeria, Post Office and restaurants. The same facilities (apart from a Post Office) are available in Moëlan. The local cider farm of Pen Ar Ster is about 5 minutes drive away with some of the best cider in the region. There are a huge array of crêperies, for which Brittany is famous, as well as its seafood. Doelan is 5 min drive and is the location for the French version of Doc Martin. Quimperlé has 2 hypermarkets, an out-of-town shopping area and an indoor swimming pool. Pont Scorff zoo is 20 mins away and Océanapolis in Brest is a 1 hr drive. Lots of weekly markets in each of the surrounding villages, Guidel on a Sunday market is well worth a visit. Lorient has excellent restaurants and bars and hosts the annual Inter-Celtic Festival, which is a must-do. It is also home to a WW2 submarine base which has a very impressive museum and nuclear submarine that you can tour. Pont Aven is a beautiful town which inspired Paul Gauguin. He stayed at Marie Henry's house in Le Pouldu where his graffitti and paintings cover the walls! Pont Aven has lots of art galleries and biscuit shops where you can help yourself to the free samples. Riec-sur-Belon is known as the oyster capital of France and you can also buy oysters at Merrien and Belon(about 10 mins drive). The River Laita flows from Quimperlé to Le Pouldu and has a large forest on each bank where there are plenty of walks, perfect on a hot day. You can also canoe along this stretch of the tidal river. Quimper is the capital of Finistère and is a pretty, medieval city with cobbled streets and half-timbered houses. It is well-known for its faïence (pottery). A very pleasant place for a wander. Last, but not least, the beaches and coastal paths are fantastic. You'll have to force yourself to leave them to see everything else on offer!

From the Owner

One of the biggest benefits of the property is the huge garden, which comes with its own resident owl! Children love it here as they have so much space to run around in, and they love the home-made den at the bottom of the garden which was built by our son and his Australian cousins one very happy summer a few years ago. I love being so close to the sea as it reminds me of growing up in a seaside town, it's a real home-from-home, only with better food!
