Cosy Cottage, near St Andrews, with central heating. Wi-fi. & tennis court.

Overview

Property

Updated: 04-Nov-2016
Country Cottage just outside Cupar, Nr. St Andrews, Fife, Scotland with free wi-fi, central heating, tennis court. New prices!

Garden Cottage is right in the heart of our country estate in Fife, about 9 miles from St Andrews and its many golf courses, and we look forward to welcoming guests to our pretty cosy cottage. The cottage is detached, two storey, and set in its own garden, with a lawn to the front, and grass to the back, with woodlands at the side. It is sits on a private road, which is only used by cottage guests, and the very occasional tractor working on the estate. It is a peaceful place, with lots of traditional charm.

Inside the cottage has a sitting room, dining room, kitchen and cloakroom with toilet on the ground floor, and upstairs, there is a bathroom which has a lovely showerbath, with fixed screen and power shower, toilet and basin, as well as 2 bedrooms - one with a double bed, the other with 2 twin beds. The beds are handmade by a local craftsman, from our own timber, and are made up with comfy toppers and cosy duvets. There is also a full size cot, and we are happy to supply bed linen and towels for your baby.

The sitting room is comfortable and well equipped, with an open fire for the chillier times of year, or even just for the fun of having a crackling log fire burning in the evening. The sitting room has 2 big sofas, lots of cushions, and free-sat television. There is also a DVD player and ipod docking station with radio.

The cottage has full central heating, and heating is included at certain times of year. Please ask for details. The dining room can easily accommodate 4 or even 6 at the table, and there is also a piano, for the musically gifted!

The kitchen is fully equipped with a cooker, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine/tumble dryer and microwave.

Outside the garden is stocked with flowers and herbs. The woodland and adjacent stream are often visited by deer, especially in the early morning, and as the kitchen overlooks the woods, you might be lucky enough to see a deer while you make your morning tea. In front of the cottage, in an open grassy area, is our duck pond, which has many wild ducks. In the spring, there are many ducklings, swimming in line behind their mothers. We are regularly visited by Harry the Heron, and very occasionally, by otters.

In May, we host the Fife Agricultural Show in some of our fields. This is far enough away from the cottage that you will hardly notice it, but if you want to visit, there is lots to see and do, with show jumping, cattle, sheep and horse shows, as well as all sorts of traditional Scottish exhibitions and displays. On the Estate, about 100 yards from the cottage, is our tennis court, and guests are welcome to use it by arrangement. If you don't have room in your luggage to bring rackets, just let us know, and we'll provide some.

Further afield, there is so much to see and explore in Fife. The Open Golf comes to St Andrews regularly, and was back again in July 2015, and in 2018 it comes to Carnoustie, which is roughly an hour from the cottage. St Andrews itself has much to see, from St Rules Tower, the Castle and the other historic areas. On the Fife Coast, there are the pretty East Neuk villages, such as Anstruther, and Pittenweem, and the Pittenweem Art Festival is not to be missed. The beach and forest at Tentsmuir is well worth a visit. Even in high summer the long white beaches are clean and quiet, and seals can often be seen basking in the sun ( the sun does actually shine quite a lot in Scotland - contrary to common belief!!). Edinburgh is only an hour away by train or car, with the Edinburgh Festival in August, and so many sights and shops to see and visit.

The cottage has free unlimited BT Infinity wi-fi internet for guests to use. It is about 9 miles from St Andrews, and so is perfect for golfers, or for visitors to the University.

It really is our pleasure to welcome you to Garden Cottage, and we will do our best to make your stay in Fife a happy memorable one. We look forward to hearing from you!

About the Owner

We are Chris & Margo Addison-Scott, and we live in Fife, Scotland. I was a lawyer, now retired, and Chris is a Chartered Surveyor. Since I gave up the law, I run the family farm, and gardens. Much more interesting!

We have 3 children, Alexandra who now lives and works in London, Jamie is at Glasgow University, and Ben is still at school, at Strathallan near Perth.

The setting, the cottage and even the weather were better than we could have hoped for. My kids were amazed by having their own tennis court and my wife was amazed by star gazing at night through the velux in our room.

Delightful stay at Garden Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a really wonderful stay at Garden Cottage and loved the peaceful surroundings. The cottage was clean and cosy, charming little bedrooms and we had a roaring fire to sit by and enjoy the ambience. Margo had left us some treats and a yummy loaf of home baked bread.

Beautiful surroundings and wildlife outside the cottage, we had a flock of Margo's hens lining up by the front door every morning.

The location was in easy reach of St Andrew's (20 mins) and we also travelled up to the southern highlands and Pitlochry nice easy drive.

Cupar town was useful for shopping and food, plenty of restaurants and 2 small supermarkets to get provisions.

Fantastic stay, thanks to Margo for everything and we will be back for sure!

Gorgeous short break at Garden Cottage near Cupar

  • 5 of 5

My son, 2 year old granddaughter and I had a beautiful, relaxing short break in this lovely cottage. Just open the front door to gaze on..or run in generous, private grounds. Inside, full of character and terrific attention to detail from the host. Welcome package of food, including fresh bread; toiletries, towels, fresh flowers and teddies. Only 15/20 minutes to St Andrews and heaps of information provided on services and activities in Fife. Highly recommended.

Loved Cupar and the Cozy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Staying at the Cozy Cottage in Cupar was like stepping back in time, but with all the modern conveniences one might need or want. The location was perfect - only 9 miles from St. Andrews, but in a quiet, rural setting. We loved the town of Cupar and were fortunate to be there on market day for fresh smoked trout and salmon and local cheeses. Perfect for our picnics! Margo gave us excellent recommendations for dinner at Ostler Close which may have been the best dining experience of our entire trip. She sent great information and maps in advance so we were prepared to make the most of our short stay in Fife. I would highly recommend the Cozy Cottage!

Beautiful spot in a accessible location

  • 4 of 5

The property is tucked away on a beautiful and peaceful piece of land on the outskirts of Cupar. It has everything that you would need for a self catering vacation near St. Andrews. It is centrally located in Fife and as golfers who tried different courses it worked perfectly.

Picture Perfect In Every Way!

  • 5 of 5

Loved It!

We booked this cottage as a home base while we toured the St. Andrew's area, Fife and Edinburgh; it is a lovely place to stay.

Margo is a very thoughful hostess and we were greeted with warm homemade bread, fresh flowers, milk, cookies and wine!

The cottage is delightful, cozy and clean. The beds are most comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped and accommodated our group of four adults.

We thoroughly loved this cottage and highly recommend this to anyone - so much better than a hotel!

Charming and welcoming

  • 5 of 5

Margo made our stay in her Garden Cottage comfortable through a large number of thoughtful touches - fresh flowers, a plentiful welcome pack of breakfast necessities which meant we didn't have to shop in the dark on the way in from the airport or get up early on our first day, a handmade knit toy animal for our daughter, and, since we stayed over Christmas, plenty of decorations, Christmas candies, crackers, and so on. The cottage itself is very comfortable and has everything needed for a short stay, and the location is perfect for touring southern Scotland. We'll return as soon as we can.

Location

From the Owner

Chris's family have owned this property for about 150 years, so it is a very special place to us, and we love to show it off to guests. It is a mixture of traditional and modern, with all the benefits of a superb location, near to St Andrews, with easy access to Edinburgh, and of course, the East Neuk of Fife.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Edinburgh Airport at 40 Miles Nearest Barpub : Cupar at 2 Miles Nearest Golf : Cupar at 2.5 Miles Nearest Train : Cupar at 2.5 Miles Nearest Motorway : M90 at 20 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Cupar at 2 Miles Nearest Beach : St Andrews at 9 Miles Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

Fife has some of the most lovely beaches in Scotland. There are the famous East and West Sands of St Andrews, as filmed in Chariots of Fire, the beautiful white beaches at Tenstmuir, and the more rugged beaches of the East Neuk of Fife, which is famous for its traditional fishing villages, such as Pittenweem, and Anstruther, and many others. All well worth a visit.

Travel:

Edinburgh Airport is about 50 minutes drive from Cupar. Cupar itself has excellent rail links to Edinburgh city centre. There are bus services to St Andrews, Perth and Dundee. Perth is about 40 minutes form Cupar by car, and St Andrews and Dundee are only about 15-20 minutes away by car.

Further Details:

Cupar is well served by supermarkets and local shops. There is a large Tesco, and the local co-op supermarket is good and worth trying, particularly its butchers. We thoroughly recommend Fisher & Donaldson - a local baker with branches in St Andrews and Cupar - with the most delicious cakes! There are many good restaurants locally. The famous Peat Inn restaurant is only about 15 minutes away, and the (haunted) Inn at Lathones is just beyond St Andrews. There are many other restaurants locally, and we'll be happy to recommend others. There is also a local reliable taxi firm, so you don't need to worry about driving on an evening out.

Facilities

From the Owner

Garden Cottage is an enchanting mixture of old and new. It is a traditional stone built cottage, originally for the estate gardener, but now it is fully equipped for your comfort and convenience. The location of this cottage is practically perfect in every way (to quote Mary Poppins!!) and is set in the heart of our country estate. It has views over the duck pond to the front, and rolling hills and fields at the back. But it is still within easy reach of Cupar and St Andrews, so is a perfect base from which to explore Fife, Edinburgh, and further afield in Scotland.
