About the Owner

We bought this house in Beverley as a base for visiting family and friends in the area.

When we first viewed it, we fell in love with it. The previous owner was an architect who had sympathetically modernised it with care and attention to detail. The day room at the rear of the house is what really sold it to us as it is a light and airy room even in winter. The roof is higher than the normal rooms with two large skylights and the far wall is all glass. This makes the room almost part of the garden and even on mild winter days we often sit with the door wide open.

We love Beverley which is a beautiful market town and is handy for some lovely villages in the Yorkshire Wolds where we like to walk.

Grove Cottage had everything we had hoped for, including a properly equipped kitchen and a comfortable bed. The little garden was just as neat and as secluded as in the photos; and the location within Beverley was just right. If we stay in Beverley again (as we hope we will), we hope we can stay again. Excellent Property

Property was much more roomier than I expected. We had an en suite main bedroom with a good size second room in the attic which is ideal for kids. The kitchen has all you need and the garden room is warm enough to spend most of your time and good for socialising whilst cooking. We barely used the lounge at the front of the property. The location is superb and you could walk into the centre of Beverley no issue. It is easy access to Hull and York is only an hour away. If we need to stay in the area again will be first place we look.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Leeds-Bradford at 70 Miles Nearest Ferry : Hull at 15 Miles Nearest Train : Beverley at 0.7 Miles Nearest Motorway : M62 at 10 Miles Nearest Beach : Hornsea at 12 Miles


Beverley is close the coastal resorts of East Yorkshire, including the nature reserves of Spurn Point and Flamborough Head. These are wonderful for bird watching.


Leeds Bradford airport is an hour away and there are good road and rail links to the rest of Britain. London is about two hours away by train. A car is not essential but would be an enjoyable addition to your stay.


The historic city of York is 30 miles away. Also you may not have considered visiting the nearby town of Hull but the old town has some interesting landmarks and excellent museums plus a spectacular aquarium. The journey takes only 15 minutes by train.

Castle Howard of 'BridesHead Revisited' fame is an hour's drive and there are many picturesque villages around the area. The Yorkshire Wolds are on the doorstep with excellent easy walking.

Beverley is a historic market town with a twice weekly market and a host of independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. You will also find the better known supermarkets close by.

There is an award winning fish and chip shop and an excellent deli 5 minutes walk from the house.

The town dates back to the 8th Century and was originally known as Inderawuda and was founded by Saint John of Beverley during the time of Angle kingdom Northumbria.

After a period of Viking control, it was passed into the hands of Saxons where it became more prominent in terms of religious importance in Great Britain. It continued to grow especially under the Normans when its trading industry was first established. A place of pilgrimage through the Middle Ages due to its founder, Beverley eventually became known as a noted wool-trading town.

Beverley was once the 10th largest town in England and amongst the richest, thanks in part to its connection to founding saint of the town John of Beverley, however the English Reformation saw the town drop in stature.

  • Notes on accommodation: The house is situated about ten minutes walking distance from the center of the historic market town of Beverley and is ideally place for exploring Yorkshire. It is well equipped and a great alternative to a hotel, sleeping 4. There is excellent living areas and a very pleasant, sheltered garden with a decked area for dining and sitting. Outside: The day room opens onto a decked area and gravelled courtyard garden complete with outdoor furniture including a dining table and chairs. There is also a firepit / barbeque. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and bed linen is provided. Final cleaning is included in the price. Other: The kitchen is open plan to the light and airy day room, with two sofas, dining table and LCD television with Freeview and DVD player. There also is a Sky box so bring your own card if you wish.
