This is an extremely comfortable, very well maintained and very well equipped semi-detached (but very private) house suitable to stay at any time of the year. It is located within a small village – Castillo - on the coastal Camino de Santiago trail and is surrounded by beautiful green countryside that looks down to the sea. It is only 20 - 25 minutes drive from Santander and just 5 – 15 minutes drive to the superb beaches & surfing towns of Noja, Isla, Ajo, Galizano, Langre, Loredo, Somo and Santona – collectively known as the Trasmiera Coast. Four Blue Flag Beaches are within a 5 minute drive of the house. The expanse of many of the local beaches means that they rarely feel crowded. This area was inaugurated into EDEN – European Destinations of Excellence – in 2011.

This is an excellent property for families who will appreciate the newness and spaciousness of the house and private garden, the equipment provided especially in the kitchen and outdoors, the big basement laundry and storage area, free high speed wi-fi/internet and the ease of access to great beaches, superb natural areas and tourist attractions, shops, local markets, traditional restaurants, bars and cafes.

Past guests frequently comment on the abundance of things to do within a small radius of the house and often find themselves not straying that far and just enjoying the local area. This is an authentic village with only Spanish people living here. Our immediate neighbours are a pleasant young Spanish couple with two young children. The land our houses are built on belonged to my neighbours elderly uncle who still lives in the village and used to keep a fruit and vegetable garden on the site.

Inside the house and upstairs there are 2 double rooms and 1 twin/ triple room plus a fully fitted bathroom. Beds are new and comfortable and there is plenty of wardrobe space.

Downstairs is a new kitchen with fridge freezer, oven, electric hob, microwave, dishwasher, kettle, toaster, range of coffee makers (plunger, stovetop and Nespresso machine), juicer and more. Also a bright, spacious lounge with tv, dvd, sofa and reclining armchairs. Off the lounge is the dining room. Both rooms have French-style doors and offer views of the mountains and down to the sea less than 3kms from the house.

From the ground floor you access a fully fitted basement with laundry (washing machine and separate dryer, iron and ironing board) and a spacious, shelved storage area with toys and beach gear for guests use.

Outdoors is a well tended private garden with garden furniture and a variety of mature plants and trees.

The house is centrally heated, double-glazed and has exterior roller-blinds ensuring a great nights sleep. It also has both Spanish and limited Sky TV as well as free high speed internet.

For security it is fitted with a smoke alarm and a fire extinguisher.

Across from the house is ample parking and a small village square with childrens playground and `boules´ area – bowling being a popular sport in Cantabria. Siete Villas – the local soccer team – have their small stadium in the village and a game can usually be enjoyed most Sundays after mass. Mass is said every Sunday in the 16th century village church; Iglesia de San Pedro. The nearest bar, Rufino’s, is a traditional Cantabrian `taberna´ run by the same family for decades and can be walked to in less than 10 minutes. You can try good regional cheeses, cured meats, anchovies as well as wine drunk from the `porron´ (traditional glass wine pitcher) here and the owners son, Marcos, who helps out is one of the Cantabrian Tourist Board officials who speaks English and can offer advice on the area. He also mans the local tourism office in Castillo and provides guided visits.

Beaches, shops, restaurants & bars are all within a short distance as is Santander city (20 minutes), Bilbao (50 minutes), Cabarceno Wildlife Park (25 minutes), Santillana de Mar (35 minutes) and more. Many activities can be practiced locally including rambling and hiking, multiple water sports, golf, horse and camel riding, fishing and lots more. There are several discreet naturist beaches in the area too.

Being a huge farming area, local produce is excellent. Noteworthy are the vegetables and pulses, cheeses, cured meats, fish and seafood especially tuna, sardines and anchovies from Santona. Dining out is very inexpensive with a typical 3 course menu with wine at lunchtime costing around 12 – 16 euros per person. Great choice of restaurants in the area. The Young Cantabrian Chef of the Year 2015, Ruben Abascal, has his restaurant `Los Brezos´only 500 metres from the house. Believe it or not it is located by a petrol station but his tasting menu at just over 30 euros per person will knock your socks off. Another great restaurant - La Yaya - is just 3 minutes drive from the house. The chef is French and creates a fusion of French and Spanish dishes. A daily fixed price lunch menu with wine costs just 16 euros at time of writing.

About Ken

I live in Cantabria with my Spanish wife and our twin daughters. Cantabria has been our home since 2004. Prior to that we lived in the Basque Country, the USA, Britain, Australia and Ireland. We enjoy travel and have a keen understanding of the needs of holidaymakers as both my wife & I work in the travel industry. Count on us to ensure that our rental property (it is not our main residence) is exactly as described and that we´ll do all possible to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible while staying. We´re easily reached should guests need to contact us during their stay and we´re a mine of knowledge about Cantabria and Spain in general which we´d be happy to share with guests.

Why Ken chose Arnuero

Cantabria my family and I love for it´s stunning and varied countryside, superb coastline, excellent cuisine and all round quality of life. It's a terrific place for a relaxing holiday with plenty of interesting and enjoyable things to see and do. We love the ease of access to pretty Santander, historic Santillana del Mar, Asturias and the Picos de Europa Mountains, Bilbao, San Sebastian and the Rioja wine region. We moved here for all the above reasons and specifically to this house (it is not our main residence anymore) for its comfort and space, its location in an authentic Cantabrian village, its close proximity to many picturesque beaches and coastline, its mountain and woodland surroundings and its ease of access to all the great places mentioned above.

What makes this villa unique

Our house is a home-away-from-home. A cliche but true. It´s sturdy, well kept, spacious, comfortable, centrally heated, well furnished and well equipped. You don´t go on holidays to be less comfortable than you would be at home and in our house you won´t be. Also, as this is our rental property guests will not find bothersome or off-putting personal belongings of ours lying around in wardrobes and cupboards. A personal pet hate.

The house has 3 roomy and bright bedrooms with new beds, 2 fully fitted bathrooms, a modern, well equipped kitchen and a spacious basement laundry with plentiful storage space. The well tended garden is ample and peaceful. For our English speaking guests we have limited SKY TV installed and free wi-fi internet. All bedlinen & towels including beachtowels are supplied.

We have had a great time! 5/7 days of great weather. We enjoyed Bilbao, Santander, the Museo de Prehistoria at Mercado del Este was very interesting. The caves at El Soplao were well worth the hour trip and the scenery was stunning. Loved the beaches at Noja and especially at Playa de la Arena. Thanks Ken & Belen for a very well equipped house - we needed nothing. Love to come back.

La llegada fue muy bien , menos los ultimos metros que estando muy cerca no lo encontraba el gps. La casita esta muy cuidada, tiene un monton de cosas de uso normal, que se agradece al llegar y no tener que salir corriendo al super. Ibamos con 2 niñas pequeñas y al encontrarnos con una trona, cochecito, juguetes, cuentos..... era la sensacion de estar en casa

ken estuvo en todo momento amable y dispuesto a ayudar si lo necesitabamos, arreglo y limpio bicis de sus hijas pequeñas por si queriamos usarlas

El lugar esta muy bien ubicado, en un momento estas en varias playas preciosas, y si no vas con niños pequeños- que no te da tiempo para nada- hay cerca un parque natural, cuevas y un monton de cosas apetecibles

En resumen , una semana muy aradable que puedo recomendar a todo el mundo

a great stay in a nice part of Spain

We had a lovely stay in the house which was very comfortable and clean. There are a few nice beaches in the environs, and we made a nice walk on the coastal road, whith nice vieuws and a lot of climbing.

The house is ideal to visit the caves of Altamira and the natural park of Cabarceno, with it's elephants and bears and other wildlife.

There are also a lot of nice restaurants in the surroundings.

We were happy that it was not as hot as in other parts of Spain

Lovely home in spectacular region

We loved our stay at this property. It is conveniently located between Santander and Bilbao, and is a great jumping-off point for exploring the beautiful northern Spanish coast and Basque country. The owners had lots of excellent suggestions for day trips, and so we visited wonderful beaches and fishing villages, famous Santilla del Mar, Picos de Europa National Park and the charming mountain village of Potes, Bilbao and San Sebastian and Santander and many other places. The Camino de Santiago runs through the local village and is within a stone's throw of the house. The house itself is very roomy and comfortable, with a lovely garden and convenient parking, and the owners could not have been more helpful throughout our week-long stay. And the food in the region is spectacular! All in all, we highly recommend this rental any time of the year.

Fantastic location close to a variety of beaches and towns. The house was very well appointed, it had a great range of beach equipment which is very handy if you come by plane. We would definitely recommend this property for families.

Family holiday

There were a lot of extremely positive reviews about the house (and Ken) which made us slightly sceptical as they were nearly too good to be true. However, both lived up to expectations. A very well equipped and comfortable house where everything worked (lots of hot water even with 2 showers, the dishwasher and washing machine running) and the owner (Ken) went beyond the call of duty to introduce us to the area, some local facilities and even organized bike hire at an excellent price before our arrival. The area is beautiful - great scenery and stunning beaches. Great cycling and walking. Lots of good places to eat, visit and shop. Excellent!

Clean, comfortable, modern and well equipped.

The house is well situated for several activities- beaches, golf, shopping, kayaking, restaurants, supermarkets and a great animal park. The garden is lovely to chill in and enjoy a BBQ. Appreciated the "extras"- a welcome bottle of wine, outside/beach equipment and the owners support in arranging our kayak trip and a local restaurant booking. The weather was fabulous which helped too.

Special interest holidays:

This is a prime area for surfing and wind-surfing and there are many surf schools in the vicinity. Diving is also popular as is canoeing and sailing. It is an excellent area for hiking and hillwalking both in the mountains and along the coast. Our house is less than 5 minutes from the Trasmiera Ecopark (Ecoparque de Trasmiera) which was the only place in Spain to be awarded the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) award in 2011. The Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail passes through our village. For those interested in cooking, the 1 star Michelin restaurant El Cenador de Amos in Villaverde de Pontones offers 1 and 2 day cookery courses in Spanish. Private language classes in both the Spanish language and the German language can be arranged also.

Coast/Beach:

Superb beaches only 5-13 minutes drive or 3kms-18kms. These include Berria, Trengandin, Ris, Isla, Ajo, Langre, Loredo & Somo. This area, called the Trasmiera Coast, is noted for it´s long, fine sand beaches. Extremely popular with surfers and watersport enthusiasts. Only slightly further are the beaches of Santander which can be enjoyably accessed by ferry from Somo. And between each of the beaches mentioned are beautiful areas of high & low coast offering lovely walks & stunning scenery.

Travel:

Santander Airport - 37kms, Bilbao Airport - 84kms, Asturias and Biarritz airports just over 200kms. Brittany Ferry Terminal in Santander -38kms and in Bilbao - 65kms. A car is recommended for people staying here though keen cyclists would also be comfortable here too. Ken is happy to pre-arrange very affordable cycle hire for guests with local bike hire shop.

The Trasmiera Ecopark where our house is located is a member of EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) which aims to promote sustainable tourism development models across the European Union. SHOPS, BARS, RESTAURANTS, BANKS

Several supermarkets, butchers, pharmacy, a bank and bars located 2kms away in Meruelo. Two taverns and a convenience store are located less than 1km away. Noja centre, 3kms away, has many shops, bars, pharmacies, several banks and restaurants. Santoña town (population 12000) has an abundance of supermarkets, bars, banks and restaurants. This is not a remote area. Access to numerous shops, bars and restaurants is very easy. We provide full details to all renters.

MEDICAL CENTRE

In Meruelo (3 minutes from the house) there is a 24hr medical centre. There is also a medical centre in Noja and 20 minutes away in Laredo there is a hospital.

PETROL

The nearest petrol station is 1 minute drive from the house and here they also sell convenience goods and freshly baked bread.

POOLS

In both Noja & Santona there is sports centre with a 25 metre covered pool. In Meruelo there is an outdoor pool open in the summer only.

MARKETS

In Noja there is a market every Wednesday and in Santona every Saturday.

Bike hire, several spas, tennis and horse riding all available locally.

FERRY

There is a regular shuttle ferry across the bay from Somo & Pedrena to Santander. This is a 15 minute drive away and is a nice alternative to driving into the city. Kids love it.

WILDLIFE RESERVE

The Cabarceno Wildlife reserve, 30 minutes drive, is a great day out for kids and adults.
