A gem!!

  • 5 of 5

We've not long returned from almost a fortnight in this lovely house. It's in a quiet village, with gorgeous grounds front and back (giving you sunshine at any time of the day) which aren't overlooked and a fabulous private pool that's a great size for swimming and playing with inflatables and balls. Our kids loved it...as did we. The house itself is lovely and the downstairs with the thick stone walls and pretty, blue shutters is a cool haven when it's hot outside. It's spacious and the facilities are great. It has everything you'd need. E.g. a good BBQ with BBQ tools, dishwasher, washing machine, books, 2 showers, outside tables front and back, a well equipped kitchen and a lovely patio etc.

We were very last minute in making our arrangements and Ruth (owner) couldn't have been more helpful and as we arrived late on, the welcome basket of groceries was much appreciated....especially the fizz!

We had several day trips including Cognac, Poitiers (fututoscope) and across to the coast at Ile de Re so although rural, as long as you don't mind a bit of a journey, there're lots of interesting things to do. Locally, the scenery is beautiful with vineyards and fields of sunflowers and pretty villages. The wildlife is abundant...saw my first Beech Marten climbing up the house wall and am still amazed at the Humming Bird Hawk Moth that visited the garden most evenings. Definitely recommend.

Owner's Response: Fiona hi there, so sorry to be so slow in responding but thank you so much for your lovely review, very much appreciated, it always a great pleasure to know that holidaymakers have enjoyed staying at the farmhouse and had a brilliant time, again thank you so much for leaving everything so neat and tidy and for looking after the flower pots. It would be a pleasure to have you stay again some other time but perhaps with a little more warning next time lol!!! Take care and hope you have a good summer Ruth

Everything we hoped for, and more...

  • 5 of 5

What attracted us was the pool, which didn't disappoint; it's big (12.5m for lengths) and it's completely private, in the back garden, which also has terrace for eating, and lovely big tree shaded corner for when it just got too hot. Although maybe worth mentioning that it was very cool inside the house itself on hot days. We wondered if the farmhouse would be too big for just the two of us, but it worked out perfectly; we had a lovely bedroom on the groundfloor, along with bath, shower and toilets. If you did have a large family there were three more bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. There was a very generous welcome basket, including a gorgeous jam made by the owner, and several stunning breakfasts! The house is well stocked with all the pans etc. you need to cook just about anything. The owner comes round to clean the pool a couple of times a week, and was just lovely and helpful without being intrusive at all.

The farmhouse stay was everything we hoped it would be and more. The big surpise was the village. The farmhouse is on the edge a beautiful and peaceful village - but also immediately accessible to some lovely walks and runs. There aren't any major hills, mainly flat with gentle slopes - and next to no traffic. You can watch incredible skies and melting sunsets as you walk alongside shimmering wheatfields, and thousands of giant sunflowers, flowing across gently sloping fields. It's really worth taking the time to walk through the village, and along the lanes and tracks in any direction. I think children would love it too.

Unfortunately we didn't book in time, and missed the Friday night dinner at the local Auberge, so make sure you book early. Next time. However, we did discover a wonderful restaurant in nearby Pioussay, Aux Choeurs De Bacchus. Again, you need to ring and book ahead, as they only have 3-4 tables, but the food and wine are divine (retired sommelier and chef). It's very good price, and extremely good food. You can also buy some very fine wines at reasonable prices.

To sum up, I think the owner has carefully selected some small piece of heaven, and is maintaining on all our behalf. Thank you so much for your efforts Ruth, they are truly appreciated. We are planning to return.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much Linda for sharing the experience of your recent holiday at my farmhouse, its always a true pleasure to know that guests have thoroughly enjoyed themselves staying here and that you have had a great holiday. It's certainly very reassuring for potential guests to read a review such as yours, current to the year we're in, comprehensive, complimentary and just full of all sorts of information , it will no doubt enhance confidence for others to follow in your footsteps which is extremely kind of you, it also confirms for them that the farmhouse does actuallty exsist and so do I !! It was lovely to meet you both and have you stay, thank you again for leaving everything so beautifully neat and tidy, and for looking after the flower pots for me, always much appreicated, It would be wonderful to have you come and stay again, no problem, anytime.... Look after each other and look forward to seeing you both again sometime, Ruth

A perfect place to relax and recuperate

  • 5 of 5

As a family we have quite specific needs and requirements from a holiday. One of our children is disabled, having both Downs Syndrome and Autism. We, therefore, need somewhere which gives Thomas space to be noisy yet seclusion and safety too. For the rest of us we need somewhere where we can relax whilst still being able to keep an eye on Thomas!

In every conceivable way this was the perfect place for us. The house is lovely - full of character and charm yet practical and well equipped too. We visited during a heat wave and the house, being an old 19 century farmhouse with thick walls, offered cool respite from the heat of the day when needed and prevented sleepless nights too! There is plenty of room for a large family and the living room was well stocked with books and DVDs. The kitchen is large, airy and well equipped.

The chief attraction for us in booking this holiday was the swimming pool. It's 12 metres x 6 and maintained impeccably by Ruth, the owner. This was the first holiday for some years when I've come home weighing no more than when I left because I was able to do some healthy exercise in it! It was wonderful for the children too - and safe. And, crucially, we had the exclusive use of it.

We ate outside every evening either at the back or front of the house and barbecued most evenings (it's the only place I've stayed in which has 3 barbecues!!). We didn't venture out much but found everything we needed in Chef Boutonne a few kms away -including a nice restaurant for lunch.

Ruth is a very friendly host and the house was prepared and cleaned to an extremely high standard. It's clearly really important to her that her guests have the best time - which we did. We've already provisionally booked for next year.

I really can't recommend this place highly enough.

Owner's Response: Richard thank you so much for your very kind comments and for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review of your recent holiday at my farmhouse. I'm sure that future potential guests will find this extremely helpful when trying to decide on a property for their own forthcoming holidays, especially when there are so many beautiful places advertised to choose from, much appreciated. It is surprising how many guests like to point out to me how delighted they are to discover the pool, albeit that the size is specified in the advertising, it seems in reality its still unexpectedly large and as you say, I agree, its crucial that it should be solely for the use of the current guests!! I'm so pleased you all had such a lovely holiday and enjoyed your stay, the weather was just fantastic for you as well to top it all off, who could wish for more..... It was a pleasure having you stay and meeting you all and I'll look forward to having you stay again next year, take care Ruth

Fantastic relaxing holiday excellent accommodation

  • 5 of 5

The pool was amazing, lovely gardens and the house was nice and cool with plenty of space. The owner was very friendly and came twice weekly to clean the pool. We were so impressed that we have already booked again for next year. The whole property including the pool was nit overlooked at all. The weather was amazing and all amenities and shops were close by.

Lovely place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a very relaxing fortnight at this spacious old farmhouse in a quiet little hamlet. The place was immaculate, the kitchen well equipped and the pool was amazing. The owner was helpful but discreet and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend either this property, or the one nearby that is also available to rent from the same owner.

My favourite place

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Hanc was excellent, the property had everything we could ask for, it was very clean, and the pool was superb, and it was also very clean when we arrived, and also cleaned during our stay. The large garden was very well maintained, and we had a very enjoyable hour chatting with the friendly gardener. It was a very quiet village, and the surrounding countryside was ideal for cycling, and there was lots of wildlife, including deer, and the wonderful sight of swallows skimming the pool to drink, even as we were in the pool. There is a small town about ten minutes by car with two supermarkets, petrol stations, and cafes. The larger town of Civray is about twenty minutes by car with all the shops you could want.

To sum up, this property is ideally situated for a relaxing holiday, but within easy reach of lots of interesting attractions.

PS, I am going there again in September.

Special interest holidays:

There is also local fishing on the river Charente or the river Vienne (licences required) or private fishing lakes available in the area. There are also several horse riding centers in the local area, once very close to the farmhouse. For artists who enjoy painting there are many interesting local features that could keep you busy for hours, market halls, old stone river bridges, abbeys and old churches. This is also a lovely area for cyclists, one of the french favourite past times of course, the countryside offering lots of lovely lanes and tracks and gently rolling so its not flat or too steep! Bike hire is available locally.

Coast/Beach:

Beaches in the area offer a nice lazy day out for a change from the swimming pool, Royan - St Palais sur Mer - La Côte Sauvage approx 1.30hrs drive have excellent beaches, La Rochelle has a few pretty coves at 1hrs and just south of here Chatillon-sur-Plage offers larger sandy beaches, the oyster parks at Fourras will also offer the odd sandy cove. There are also large lakes, closest at Celles sur Belles offering all sorts of water sports, local rivers as well for canoeing + water ski-ing.

Travel:

The farmhouse is easily accessible from any of the car ferry ports, all of them offering easy motorway driving at varying distances and times, Calais approx 6rs. The local airports Poitiers 1hr, Angouleme 1hr, Limoges 2hrs, La Rochelle 1hr, offering good all year round services, not to mention major airports Bordeaux 2 hours, Nantes 2 hours and of course Paris. Trains are equally easy with Eurostar London Lille Poitiers. Car rentals available but a car is definitely a necessity once here.

Distances:

Bordering the Charente department, the farmhouse is situated near Chef Boutonne a lovely market town full of character, offering full everyday facilities necessary.Ruffec easily accessible approx 20km, Sauzé Vaussais close on hand at 10km, Melle, Couhé, even Civray and Confolens are closeby. Being well positioned in the heart of the Poitou-Charentes area so easy access to major cities of Poitiers, Niort, Limoges, La Rochelle, Angouleme, St Jean D'Angely, Saintes and of course all the coast line.

Further Details:

Set in the heart of the Poitou-Charentes, southern part of the Deux Sevres (79) bordering the Charente region, in a small hamlet called Hanc, there are a multitude of treasures to discover in the area but if the weather is good you won't want to budge from the farmhouse except to do your shopping and sample the super fresh produce and local markets. Daily requirements are all close to hand either at Chef Boutonne, Sauzé Vaussais and Ruffec.

Alternatively 4 major cities easily accessible, Poitiers, renowned for Futuroscope the futuristic adventure park with exciting images and scientific wizardry, Angouleme, Niort with its 'marais poitevin' (Venice vert) a system of endless canals attracting an abundance of wildlife, Limoges dedicated to porcelain. La Rochelle approx 1hr with its beautiful old port and fantastic sea food restaurants, Royan with its fabulous beaches and Zoo at 'La Palmyre' incredible flamingos, Cognac for brandy and pineau distilleries, Aquatic centre with diving or hamman facilitities. Closer to home the folklore festival at Confolens is a must in August, Silver mines at Melle, the Monkey farm at Romagne children love or simply enjoy walking/biking the surrounding countryside.
