House In Village near Carcassonne with Garden, Pool, WiFi. Sleeps 8. 4 Bathrooms

Overview

Property

Updated: 15-Nov-2016
House in Laurac le Grand, Carcassonne, Aude, Languedoc Roussillon, France - Beautiful, Completely Restored 18th Century House, Very Tranquil In Small Village In Languedoc

Near Carcassonne our South facing house is located in the Languedoc, in the small Cathar hilltop village, of Laurac le Grand. This protected historic village of 100 people is central to all of the Cathar areas. The beautifully renovated 18th century house has 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, large terrace, private garden in which there is a 8x4.5m swimming pool. From the house and terrace there are wonderful views of unfenced rolling hills of woods, fields and wilderness. 32km. South West of Carcassonne and 75km from Toulouse to the East.

Our house is on three floors with the front door opening from the Grand Rue (all of about 9 houses) onto the second floor where there are four bedrooms and four bathrooms. Stairs from this hall go up to the top floor which has a large landing leading to the kitchen, sitting room and terrace. On this floor there is also a lavatory and hand basin. There is a very large ground floor with stairs down to it from the entrance hall. This was the stables for the house and the original hay racks are still there. Now it contains a utility area with a clothes washing machine, spin dryer, sink and a walk-in hot drying room. One of the ways to the Garden and Pool is through the back door on this level.

The top floor is a large sized living area of 56 sq.mts facing South and West which is all integrated to allow for easy living and cooking. Large sliding glass doors can be opened as much or as little as you want and lead you on to the terrace, 32 sq. mts, where the wooden floor is flush with the rest of the living area. Therefore you can eat outside on the terrace or half in and half out with the greatest of ease and the minimum of carrying food from the kitchen. There is an expandable outside table with chairs on the terrace together with casual outside seating and sun-mattresses for sun worshippers. From all parts of the living area of the house and terrace you have this really stupendous un-interrupted view of the woods and meadows as if they are part of the room. Pigeons and Doves bill and coo around the terrace, garden and pool and after dark the Owls start calling.

There is a Jotul woodburning stove and logs in the living area and large television, a separate DVD player for which you can hire DVDs nearby which are in English but not the titles on the outside. There are masses of books to suit all tastes for your use. The living area has very comfortable armchairs and sofas and coffee tables.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a very large fridge, electric oven, microwave, electric fast reaction hob, dishwasher, double sink and separate vegetable sink. It is all very pretty and also practical and time saving. There are wooden floors throughout and the terrace has a wooden decking surface which in our view is very much nicer that tiles. On the landing, 14sq.mts, there is a free-standing freezer and a fridge to cool wine in thus leaving one masses of room in the fridge. Also on the landing there is a lavatory and washhand basin.

Bedroom 1. This 16 sq.mts en suite bedroom faces South with a wonderful view from the window. There is a large double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers/dressing table and bedside tables. The large en suite bathroom has a bath, separate walk-in shower, handbasin and lavatory. The floors are all wooden.

Bedroom 2) In this 14 sq.mts bedroom there is a large double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, dressing table, bedside tables and handbasin.. The window faces South with a lovely view. There is a generous sized private bathroom directly across the landing with bath with shower, handbasin and lavatory. The floors are all wooden.

Bedroom 3). This 10 sq.mts en suite bedroom has twin beds which could be put together as there are plenty of bed linens for this purpose. There is a wardrobe, bedside tables and a chest of drawers which is just outside the door to the landing. The window faces South with a wonderful view. The en suite bathroom has a walk-in shower, handbasin and lavatory. The floors are all wooden.

Bedroom 4) En suite 14 sq.mts bedroom with twin beds which could be put together as there are plenty of bed linens large enough for this purpose. There is a wardrobe, chest of drawers/dressing table and bedside tables. This bedroom faces on to the Grand Rue but as there is very little traffic, or people, on this road there is little noise. The en-suite large sized bathroom has a generous walk-in shower with handbasin and lavatory. All the floors are wooden.

There is a choice of natural bed linen or synthetics and which type required should be specified in advance. .Hand, bath and pool towels are supplied. In Winter electric blankets are provided. There are hairdryers in each room and electric fans for very hot weather. Each bedroom has its own eco-system electric radiator.

POOL

The pool is 8 x 4.5 mts and is set in the middle of our private garden which is separate from the house and about 30 metres away across an almost unused road. It faces South with an uninterrupted view of unspoilt hills. It is surrounded by wooden decking, grass, flowers and shrubs. There are two large trees which provide shade for those who want a break from the sun. There is a fridge in a little bothy and table and chairs. All perfect for a day by the pool. There is a locked solid wooden door into the garden and the whole area except, for the Southern side, is fenced with green wire netting covered with bamboo latticing which makes it impossible to see into the garden from the outside as well as acting as a wind barrier. With it’s magnificent view, sun and shade the garden and pool are rather idyllic.

Whilst, most visitors to our House find that all they want to do is just relax by the pool and on the terrace, there is plenty to do and see within easy driving distance.

We have totally restored, furnished and decorated our House for our own use, as well as for others, and therefore believe it has the warm and comfortable feel of a family home. Our Concierges Hubert and Anne Marie look after the house, pool and garden and are available to help out at any time if need be and as they live in the village are very nearby. We live there for many weeks during the year and love the peace and tranquillity the House gives us. We think you would find the same.

About the Owner

Caroline and I, Roderick, live in County Kilkenny, Ireland in an old 18th century farmhouse in the depths of the Irish Countryside. We have five dogs, four horses and plenty of hens who roam free throughout our garden. I am retired and look after rather a lot of vegetables with opposition from the hens. I also fish for trout and train my Labradors. Caroline Couchman is a Sculptor and works in bronze, ceramic and glass and is also a very good artist. She is an active horsewoman and rides most days and has found excellent horse trekking near our house in Laurac.

The skiing at Aix Les Thermes was fantastic, February 2013.

We had a fantastic holiday at your beautiful house in Laurac. Everything was perfect and even better than we hoped. The pool area is beautiful and the terrace absolutely delightful. To sit out there on an evening watching the wildlife (highlights were golden eagles and a deer and fawn) and the stars later on,was a real treat. We had a superbly relaxing holiday and hope to visit it again. Vince Johnson August 2012

What a wonderful house you have here in Laurac – a perfect haven for rest and relaxation; just what we all needed. We’re delighted to have found this treasure. Most of the fortnight has been spent enjoying the sunshine, the garden and pool and cooking at home

We are having the most blissful time here. Everything is just perfect. We adore your house and especially the secret garden with the swimming pool

This is an incredibly special place. The village, the pool, garden, the house just fantastic

Relaxation and tranquillity

  • 5 of 5

Having taken a holiday on the Canal du midi in 2015 my wife and I wanted a base to further explore this beautiful region. I looked for somewhere close to Castelnaudary but with a rural aspect.

Boy did we luck out in finding Les Collines. The property has been renovated to a very high standard and the views from the roof terrace are amazing. We could not believe how peaceful the village was and to sit on the terrace watching the sun go down with a glass of wine is bliss itself. We also took full advantage of the private swimming pool which is surrounded by aromatic lavender and rosemary and fresh figs hanging from the fig tree.

The surrounding countryside invites you to explore and this can be done on foot, bicycle or simply by car. You are only less than ten minutes into the nearest large town namely Castelnaudary where you can stock up on supplies, visit bars and restaurants as well as links to Toulouse and the Canal du midi.

If you are looking for a peaceful vacation in amazing surroundings with superb weather then look no further.

My wife and I would definitely stay here again.

A charming house with wonderful pool and views

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely time in this house,it has a really homely feel with a very well equipped kitchen and very comfy beds. A real boon to us as a family were the four bedrooms all with their own bath or shower. The pool was so great and essential in the heat of August situated in a lovely walled garden detached from the house so maybe not so suitable for families with young children.Roderick, the owner was helpful and charming and was quick to answer my queries.Wonderful views surround the house.I would happily recommend this house to others but let them be aware of the fact that the infirm or toddlers may find the amount of stairs in the house an issue, apart from that it's a lovely house to spend a holiday.

Cool bedrooms, hot views!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the house. The owner was incredibly communicative and helpful, the housekeeper really sweet and welcoming. The bedrooms are all simple and clean with efficient bathrooms and gorgeous shutters. The layout of the house and thick walls meant that the bedrooms were cool even in 35 degree heat. The terrace was great for late eve meals and star gazing and the pool provided hours of fun for us all. Charming village, super landscape. Really good for walking or running past fields of sunflowers! We were there for 2 weeks and there was plenty to do. Our children's favourite was the Haunted House in Carcasonne!!

Laurac

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here last year and intend to return, and soon.

Charming little hilltop village set in beautiful country ...very rural, little fields full of butterflies and wild flowers and lovely autumn fruits to be picked . Old house with Capacious living room and kitchen, and big terrace overlooking beautiful tracts of French country. Wifi, Sky...all you could want. Huge variety of places to visit, vineyards, markets, pretty villages, the cities of Carcassonne and Toulouse to name a few.

Delicious restaurants, very good one in Castelnaudary.

Very private and cosy garden surrounding the pool..barbeque et al.

You couldn't possibly be disappointed when you arrive in this house, it is everything it says in the brochure.

Wonderful Laurac

  • 5 of 5

We have recently returned from 2 weeks in Laurac as a family of 7 across 3 generations ranging from 4 years to 76. The house is beautiful and no photo of the view from the wonderful terrace could ever do it justice. With 4 en suite bedrooms, all of which were very comfortable, on the ground floor, and a large open plan kitchen/lounge/dining room on the 1st floor, all of which looked out on to the huge French windows and terrace, we had plenty of room and comfort. The pool set in the secret garden a short stroll from the house was perfect for relaxing in, and there is loads of space on the decking for stretching out on the loungers and catching the sun. For shade lovers there is also plenty of this as well as the garden is very well designed.

With loads of amazing places close to Laurac there is loads to do and see, and the village itself is stunning and amazingly quiet.

All in all an amazing place.

Location

From the Owner

As country lovers we had to find a house which was located in an area as near as possible to our idea of perfect countryside. Not an easy task and we spent many, many months looking for it over a wide range of regions. We also wanted to be in a small village, have a garden for a pool, have wondrous views, be near airports, not to have to drive on wiggly mountainous roads to go anywhere and have easy access to towns. It had to very tranquil, unspoilt and not in a tourist area. We just could not believe it when we found it and just knew that our house had to be in the village of Laurac le Grand. The house we discovered was very old and almost a wreck but after three years, working with superb restoration builders, we ended up with just what we wanted. Some COMMENTS from our Visitors' Book: "Paradise - no more needs to be said" Wingfield, Bagshot. "You have done a fantastic job and to stay in Laurac is a guaranteed cure for the cares of the world". Williams, Carlisle. "Thank you so much for the use of your beautiful home. Very relaxed in lovely area". Cook, Bristol. "A really beautiful hideaway. The ridge of the hill was spectacular for wild flowers". Reeves, London. "The house we found to be most comfortable and relaxing. Kitchen was excellent. Splendid hot water in bathrooms. Pool was most enjoyable". Digby, Dundee. "What a wonderful house you have here in Laurac - a perfect haven for rest and relaxation; just what we all needed. We're delighted to have found this treasure. Most of the fortnight has been spent enjoying the sunshine, the garden and the pool and cooking at home". Lawrence, Liverpool. "We are having the most blissful time here. Everything is just perfect. We adore your house and especially the secret garden and pool". Hughes, Swindon. "This is an incredible special place. The village, the pool, garden, the house just fantastic". Fields, Winchester.

Being an important Historic village, of only 100 residents, and protected against any developments the unspoilt, peaceful village of Laurac retains all the charms of Rural France. The village is surrounded by unfenced rolling hills of woods, fields and wilderness which provide perfect walking on paths and tracks with views of the Pyrenees,The Black Mountains and the Corbieres. The major autoroute A61 is only 15 mins away to the North but cannot be seen or heard. This runs from Western to Eastern France thus giving fast and easy routes from our house to many major Southern Cities. The very ancient town of Castelnaudary is 15 mins away and has every facility you could need and is also a major centre for the Canal du Midi. About an hour and a half away in Ax les Thermes in the Pyrenees there is excellent skiing with very cheap lifts and gear rental.

Spring starts in March with wonderful displays of white Cherry Blossom around the Village and then wild Lilac. There are masses of wild Orchids and other flowers later on in the Spring and walking in the unfenced fields is very pleasant with many kinds of emerging blossom to be seen. In Autumn the colours of the leaves, golden and russet, adorn the slopes of the hills and many varieties of Butterflies can be seen. All this can be seen by just walking out of the house all by one’s self.

Carcassonne has something for all the family. The fortified city is the obvious attraction and there are guided tours of the ramparts and castle. There are Medieval Spectaculars throughout the Summer. There are also many restaurants, cafes, bars and Artisan Shops. Laurac is in the heart of the Cathar Country and was at one time the main centre for these very special people. Much has been written about the Cathars, including the historical novel – the Labyrinth, but nothing can prepare you for seeing the remains of their mind-blowing Castles like Montsegur and Perpeytreuse. Near Foix are the quite incredible caves of Grotte de Niaux with their superb pre-hstoric cave drawings. You have to book in advance as numbers are very strictly limited and you have to go on a conducted tour. Toulouse is a really good place to visit and you can go there by car or train from Castelnaudary. The old centre is vibrant with cafes, bistros, restaurants, market. shops and boutiques When there do go to the Museum Foundation Bemberg as it houses an incredible collection of Impressionist Art. The rose coloured city of Albi with it’s famous Cathedral and Toulouse Lautrec museum is within easy reach. The ancient walled city of Mirepoix with it’s famed square, Cathedral and 13th century half-timbered houses is only 25 mins drive away through some very pretty countryside. There is a new thermal centre at Ax les Thermes called Les Bains du Couloubret, where you can swim in a thermal pool at 33 degrees, have massages, cold water pool, sauna and all kinds of pampered activities can be enjoyed.

Skiing is about one hour away at Les Monts d’Olmes and 90 mins away at Ax les Thermes. All clothes and ski gear at very reasonable rates are available at these resorts and the lifts are very cheap. There is also excellent skiing in Andorra only about two and a half hours away from the House.

There are many vineyards to visit in nearby Minervois and excellent white wines in Limoux home of Blanquette a delicious sparkling white wine which is older than champagne at a fraction of the cost.

We have many brochures in the house about other things to see and do and these cover plenty of activities for children and teenagers. We could spend all day listing things to do and the Tourist Offices in Fanjeaux and Castelnaudary will be most helpful.

Whilst, most visitors to our House find that all they want to do is just relax by the pool and on the terrace, there is plenty to do and see within easy driving distance.

COAST/BEACH: The nearest beaches are in the Narbonne area and are just over an hour away.

TRAVEL: There are airports in Carcassonne (30 mins) Toulouse (55 mins) also at Perpignon, Beziers and Girona. The train station is in Castelnaudary. Car hire is available at the airports and in Castelnaudary.

HORSE RIDING: Riding for all standards, in beautiful countryside is available.

MARKETS: There are weekly markets in Bram, Castelnaudary, Mirepoix and Revel.

SHOPPING: There are no shops in the village but 10 mins away in the village of Villasavery there is an excellent grocery, butcher, baker, pharmacy and hairdresser. Castelnaudary, 20 mins away, has three major supermarkets and every other kind of shop you could need. Mobile baker, greengrocer and butcher vans come to the village on a regular basis.

Facilities

From the Owner

We love relatively easy walking and from our house one can find this on good marked paths with views of the Pyrenees, the Black Mountains and the Corbieres. The village was once one of the principle epicentres of Catharism and is therefore a perfect centre for visiting the famous Cathar castles and with The Canal du Midi 10 mins away and Carcassonne and Toulouse not far there is too much to do and see but we suspect that, like most of those who have been kind enough to rent our house, that you will not want to stray far from the garden, pool and terrace. We are lucky enough to have repeat clients who come back to enjoy utter relaxation which makes us so very pleased as we love our house ourselves as it is so comfortable and easy to live in with masses of character and superb views.
