Renovated farmhouse between Pizarra and Alora, Spain - Idyllic Location Between Villages of Pizarra and Alora and 30 Minutes from the Coast

Cortijo Contrares is a converted farmhouse set on top of a ridge between Alora (5 mins) and Pizarra (5 mins). It sits within its own 23 acre olive grove of more than 1600 olive and fruit trees. There are spectacular views across the hills and down towards the coast. If you are looking for a private and tranquil experience then Cortijo Contrares is perfect for you. The property is entered through a large manicured courtyard. The swimming pool (11x7m) has been designed to an exceptional standard and is approached from the villa via a series of terraces. Cortijo Contrares is a perfect holiday location for a family or group of friends and is ideally suited for exploring Andalucia. Seville and Granada are within easy reach as is the coast at Marbella. The villa is equipped, throughout, to a very high standard and included is unlimited internet access via a computer in the villa or wifi. There is also a basic UK TV package in HD that includes BBC 1 & 2, ITV, C4, C5, CBEEBIES, CBBC and Film4.

About Paul

Helen and I both work as doctors in the UK and so have a fairly hectic life with our 3 young daughters. We always rented villas in Spain for our own holidays and so have stayed at many different properties over many years. We hope that we have taken all of the good aspects of places that we have stayed at and brought them to our own so that others can enjoy.

Paul purchased this villa in 2006

Why Paul chose Pizarra

We had thought about buying a place in Spain for many years and so have looked around many areas in Andalucia prior to settling here. We feel that this area offers the best of all worlds. It is a little off the beaten track as far as the popular tourist destinations are concerned. This ensures that you feel that you are in the real Andalucia whilst having all of the other benefits that the coastal areas offer within a short drive. Our main intention when looking for this place was to find tranquility and privacy which we have certainly achieved with Cortijo Contrares. We also wanted plenty of surrounding land which ensured that no matter what happened with any planning laws that we were protected.

What makes this villa unique

Cortijo Contrares was a dream for us that came to reality and every time we go out to our place we find that we are able to relax and turn off within minutes. Every month is slightly different from the glorious sunny days in January with cool nights and the log burner roaring in the lounge at night to Spring when the countryside is green and colourful with all of the flowers and the fantastic birdlife. We also enjoy the strong and powerful sun of the summer and lazy days around the huge pool and terraces with long evenings barbequeing until the sun sets over the Alora hills. Autumn again brings a different climate with warm days and cooler evenings which provide the best time to do long walks from the villa around the surrounding hills.

Notes on accommodation: There is AC in both en-suite bedrooms and the lounge and kitchen downstairs. Central heating is available in the winter for an additional cost. There is also a large wood burner in the lounge with a heating vent through to the downstairs en-suite bedroom. The windows all have mosquito nets on them allowing for a cooling breeze to pass through the house if desired. There are many facilities for children with toys/games available for all ages and many facilities that are required to look after young babies. The couple who manage the property are also available for baby-sitting. The villa has broadband access and a computer available for the Internet. There is free, unlimited wifi access throughout most of the villa. We have a UK HD TV satellite package that provides most of the standard terrestrial channels. Outside: The gardens, terraces, balcony and area surrounding the pool area are truly outstanding. As the villa is situated within its own 23 acres the property is not overlooked by any other property at all. There is a large Andalucian BBQ sited on a terrace besides the kitchen and lounge. The pool has teak sun loungers with cushions along with shades. The pool has roman steps and a swim jet. There is automatic underwater lighting at night time and all of the surrounding terraces are stylishly illuminated at night time. The pool has an elegant teak shower by its side. There is also a large garden swing with cushions on one of the terraces overlooking the pool. The pool area is surrounded by a low level wall adding further privacy. It is not fenced but there is a pool alarm available that detects movement in the water if required. Utility Room: Washing machine and additional large fridge with further washing facilities. All of the water into the villa runs through a water softening system and water to the kitchen is supplied through a reverse osmosis filtration system that purifies it. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Cleaning is weekly and all towels (apart from beach/pool) and linen are supplied and changed weekly. Other: The terrace outside the lounge and kitchen has rattan furniture and cushions along with a hammock and offers shade during the day and the sunshine in the evening. There is a large Andalucian BBQ sited on a terrace besides the kitchen.

Amazing views and great location for exploring

We were 2 families of 4. The house catered for all age ranges between 3 - 11. All the children thoroughly enjoyed finding the fairy houses!! The villa is beautiful, full of character and the air conditioning was a great bonus on the hot days when we needed cooling down. On arrival, the house was very clean and a lovely touch to have a card to welcome us and of course the cava. We had a fairly long day of travelling... There is plenty of site seeing if you're prepared to get in the car.

This has to have been our first year we have stayed a lot more round the villa which is why we all thoroughly loved this location.

Thank you Doug for all your valued information about the area and thank you to Paul and Helen for letting us enjoy your beautiful home for what I can say has to be been our most enjoyable holiday to day.

We hope to stay again very soon.

Fantastic house and pool set in stunning mountain scenery

Fantastic setting, lovely walks directly from the house, we even saw some ibex on a walk between the house and pizarra, a herd ran right across the path in front of us .. brilliant.!

House and pool were totally spotless thanks Lourdes, marina, and Doug and jo for all your hard work. Fabulous seclusion for a relaxing fortnight.

The pool was fantastic for swimming, we come to different Spanish mountains every year , Cortijo Contrares is the best house and pool we have had the pleasure to stay in ... big thankyou to Paul and helen!

Absolutely fantastic

I spent two weeks here with my husband in June. The villa is wonderful, perfectly situated for peace and quite, with to die for scenery. There is everything that you could need in the villa, and all is top quality. The owners have given it every attention to detail. The pool is lovely, and surrounded by trees and flowers. There is a lovely mid garden section should you wish to relax in the shade(as beware it can get hot 45deg this June)

The veranda is perfect for outside eating, and the BBQ easy to use(you can easily get charcoal from the local supermarkets)

Despite being surrounded by many birds and the sounds of the Spanish country side, you are not far from restaurants and bars, just a few miles away.

We would most definitely revisit this villa, the first time we have ever said that before.

A beautiful house with amazing views.

The property is situated up a steep unmade road which can be bumpy but is easily accessible. The house is set in a beautiful location and has all the amenities you could need, it is clean and very well maintained. The gardens are layed out beautifully on 3 levels with plenty of room to sit and read, relax or chat. The pool is lovely with easy access via roman steps providing a superb way of cooling down. The manager was helpful and told us about local festivals which were happening in Pizzara and Alora.

We have visited this property on many occasions and never been disappointed definitely somewhere I would recommend to friends or relatives. Manhatten bar in Alora Station has very reasonably priced food and drink for all the family. The lakes in El Choro are definitely worth a visit. If your feeling strong a walk to the top of the mountain following the gravel paths is hard work but definitely worth the views at the top something I did for the first time this year!

Coast/Beach:

The nearest beaches are Churriana and Torremolinos which are about 30 minutes by car. The beaches at Marbella and Puerto Banus can be reached in 45 minutes. The beautiful lakes near El Chorro are only 20 minutes drive to the north.

Travel:

The villa is 35 minutes from Malaga airport and 5 minutes to both Alora and Pizarra. Both of these have train stations and with the new link from Malaga airport can thus be reached by train. The remote location of the property, however, means a car is very desirable.

Distances:

Malaga centre is 35km away and Marbella 50kms. Seville, Rhonda and Granada can all be reached within 90 minutes.

Further Details:

There are many restaurants, bars and local shops in Pizarra and Alora. The well known Restaurante Los Caballos is situated at the bottom of the track off the road to the property. There are good quality supermarkets in both Alora and Pizarra. The nearest bank is just only a couple of minutes from the track.
