About the Owner

We live in North Wales and first holidayed in the Eastern Algarve in 2007. We love it here, with the relaxing pace of life, the friendly people, the beautiful beaches and the all-year-round sun. The flight to Faro is only two and a half hours for us, and then from the airport it's a 15 minute drive to Olhao. If we catch an 8.00 am flight we can be here by lunchtime. When we had the chance to buy this lovely waterfront apartment here, with such a stunning view of the ocean and nature reserve, we couldn’t resist it.

Superb apartment - just what we needed

  • 5 of 5

Spent a week here in July 2016 and the apartment was everything as advertised, it was superb. High standard of fixtures and fittings and a good comfort level throughout, though the beds were too firm for our liking.

It was our ideal base for travels across the algarve (we hired a car) as we explored the region. We would come back for a swim in the roof top pool which we always had to ourself and enjoy the spectacular views.

If you are looking at this apartment the photos are wholly accurate, it really is this nice!

Ideal Apartment

  • 5 of 5

This was our 3rd stay in this clean, modern and confortable apartment. We didnt know what to expect weather wise in February, but out of the 3 weeks stay we had one day of light drizzle. The rest of the time temperature was between 16/20 c but chilly in the evenings.

All amenites are a short walk away and a variety of restaurants to choose from, to suit all tastes.

3 large supermarkets are close by, and there's even a shopping trolley provided, to get your provisions.

Within easy walking distance is the railway station, Fuseta and Tavira are worth a visit only a short train ride away. We paid another visit to Faro as we never tire of the old town.

We would definetly recommend this apartment to anyone who is wanting a relaxing break.

We are both looking forward to returning in the Autumn,

There are 3 large supermarkets

Beautiful apartment

  • 5 of 5

This is an excellent apartment, just as advertised. It is very spacious and modern and was spotlessly clean. Lovely views from the large balcony across the nature reserve and to the sea. Sunbeds on the balcony are also included.

The roof top pool was also very clean, plenty of room to sunbathe; lovely views all around.

The booking process was very straightforward, and Julia was always very helpful with any queries we had. There were also plenty of brochures and information available in the apartment.

Olhao is very unspoilt, a lot quieter and not as “touristy” as Albufeira. Great choice of restaurants and the prices are also cheaper than the main tourist regions.

We hired a car and visited Tavira which is also recommended, and again not one of the main tourist regions.

We also went across on the ferry to the islands of Armona and Culatra. The small beaches are beautiful and well worth a visit.

In summary, this is a fantastic apartment and is a great base to explore this region. Had a great holiday!

First Class

  • 5 of 5

Excellent apartment. Comfortable, spacious and modern with everything you need for a relaxing holiday. Wifi and Freeview TV were a bonus. Spotlessly clean and with super views across the nature reserve and to the sea and Faro in the distance. Roof top pool was superb, plenty of room to sunbathe and 360 view to the islands and across the town. Lovely balcony with sunbeds, catching the sun from mid afternoon until the spectacular sunsets.

Booking was easy, good communication with Julia, and Simon met us on arrival to give a few pointers - we didn't need any other help, but it was there if required. Lots of brochures and information available to browse in the apartment.

We enjoyed the unspoilt, relaxed pace of Olhao with no signs of British tourism. Quaint pavement cafes, good choice of restaurants all at very reasonable prices.

We took ferry trips to both Armona and Culatra. There are small beaches where you dock, but the 20 minute walk across the island to the Atlantic beaches is well worth it.

Trains were not frequent, but were cheap and reliable and we used them to visit Tavira and Faro. Faro is particularly worth a visit, especially the old town.

We used Suntransfers to book airport transfers and would recommend them to anyone. Set price, known in advance and arrived on time (even at 4.30am!).

In hindsight we would have hired a car before we arrived, as it was not easy to do in Olhao.

Overall a perfect base for a first class holiday - we will be back!

Very Nice Apartment

  • 4 of 5

We visited Olhao in April, 2015, our first visit to this area of the Algarve. The apartment is in a nice area, with very nice sea views. It is very well appointed and has all of the essentials for a nice holiday. It is much larger than we expected, with good sized rooms. The rooftop space is lovely for sunbathing, although the pool is not heated. The apartment's balcony catches the afternoon sun and is great for sunbathing and dining outside.

A short walk takes you into the town - about five minutes to the fish and fruit and veg markets. From here, there are many restaurants that cater to most tastes. If we were to recommend one, try Bar 62 for tapas.

We were very pleasantly surprised at the cost of dining out, it was far cheaper than at home. We also took several train trips, again the train fares are rediculously cheap compared to Ireland. The train station is a 20 minute walk from the apartment and trains run at very regular intervals and on time.

The nearest supermarket to the apartment is Lidl. There is a much bigger supermarket in the town called Pingos. It's not well signposted, but is just off the strip that runs along the marina. Go past the markets, there's a small square opposite, continue to the next left turn and its about 150m from there. It has a great selection of food.

The only negative aspect to the area, and not applicable in the area around the apartments, is the graffiti. It is most noticeable near the train station and makes the area look run down.

The old streets are cobbled and have a real old-world charm about them. We've seen similar old town areas all over Spain and they're really nice to explore with little or no traffic.

We had nice weather for April (by Irish standards), with daytime temperatures of 23 to 27C. At night you'd need a jumper when going out to dine.

Finally, we'd give the apartment 10 out of 10, and Olhao town 6 out of 10.

From the Owner

We consider this area of the Algarve to be largely unspoilt by tourism. Although Olhao is a tourist destination it retains its charm as it is still very much a traditional Portuguese fishing town. The restaurants here have lovely, fresh food and wine at very reasonable prices, whereas many other holiday destinations have become expensive, especially to eat out. We love taking the ferry to the sandspit islands of Armona or Culatra; it is like stepping back in time, wandering past the pretty beach houses that line the paths to the beautiful white sandy beaches. There are no cars there and the beaches are never crowded, even in high season. The countryside inland is beautiful and we have spent many days exploring the various tiny hilltop villages where time seems to have stood still.

Special interest holidays:

The apartment overlooks the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve and the sea. The bird life on view is amazing - a bird twitcher's paradise!

The unspoilt, white sandy beaches and clear waters of the offshore sandpit islands of Ilha da Armona and Ilha da Culatra are easily reached by ferries that run from the quayside, at the eastern end of Olhao's waterfront. Armona is the closest to Olhao and has a few cafes/restaurants. Ihla do Farol, where the lighthouse is, at the western end of Culatra, also has a beautiful sandy beach and a few cafes. All of the beaches hold the EEC blue flag. Many other sandy beaches can be reached by car.

Faro Airport is 14 km away, approximately a 15-minute drive. Trains and buses run between Faro and Olhao. Olhao bus and train stations are both within walking distance of the apartment. A taxi from the airport is around €20-25. Car hire is not essential as the apartment is so conveniently located for all amenities, including the ferries to the offshore islands.

All amenities and necessities can be found in Olhao including supermarkets, banks, restaurants and the new Ria Shopping mall. Faro is approximately 9km away, where you will find the large Algarve Forum shopping mall. The picturesque town of Tavira is approximately 22km away. Further afield is the Spanish border which is approximately a 45 minute drive along the motorway.

Further Details:

Olhao is a traditional Portuguese fishing town, full of character with its Moorish-style houses and winding, cobbled back streets. In the heart of the historic town you will find graceful buildings with wrought iron balconies, carved stonework and decorative tiled exteriors. At the centre of the town is the church of Nossa Senhora do Rosario, built in 1698 with contributions from the fishermen. It is an elegant building with a baroque facade. Olhao is well known for its fish market; there are two market buildings on the waterfront where you will find a vast and diverse choice of fresh fish and seafood, along with locally grown fruit and vegetables. These market halls are surrounded by pavement cafes where you can sit and enjoy the view of the boats moored along the waterfront.

The Natural Park of Ria Formosa encompasses 60 km of coast between Ancao and Manta Rota. It is a vital area for birds, especially waterfowl, and the park was included in the list of wetlands of worldwide interest defined by the Ramsar Convention. You can observe the wildlife from hides dotted around the Natural Park.

Boat trips are run around the Ria Formosa, or you can hire a boat yourself.

Olhao Seafood Festival takes place in August (usually around the 2nd week). It's one of the biggest gastronomy festivals in the Algarve with plenty of delicious seafood and live entertainment every night. Apart from the daily fresh markets in Olhao there are plenty of other markets to visit in the surrounding areas, including Fuzeta, Montcarapacho and Quelfes.

The unspoilt riverside town of Tavira is worth a visit and is only a short drive away, or you can catch a train or bus there. This lovely, historical town has the Rio Gilao running through its centre which is spanned by a Roman bridge. Faro is only a short drive or bus/train journey away, where you can wander around the ancient walled town and harbour.

From the Owner

All the restaurants, cafe-bars, shops, markets and banks are within a short walk of the apartment, yet at the same time, it is just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the main street in Olhao, so you have the best of both worlds. You can chill out on the balcony, or in the rooftop pool after a day of sightseeing. The fact that only a few of the apartments in the building have access to this pool is definitely a bonus. The views and sunsets from our balcony are breathtaking; the only downside is having to tear ourselves away from the view when it is time to return home to the UK. After all, there are not many places you get the chance to see pink flamingoes whilst you are eating your breakfast..
