Overview

Property

Updated: 19-Sep-2016
House overlooking Vendicari Nature Reserve. Noto Region, South East Coast - One of six villas featured in The Times Travel 2015 " The 30 best places to stay in Sicily"

The house has 2000sqf of living space and is situated overlooking the Golfo di Noto on the crest of a hill. With thick limestone walls, white render and double height ceilings, it is cool in the summer months and warm in the winter. It sits in its own 10 acres of old olives and vines and is surrounded by unspoilt countryside and farmland. There is a 17mx5m saline purified swimming pool which is surrounded by rosemary terraces and great for laps as well as being child friendly and child safe. Likewise, the house is surrounded by terracing and has a large shaded area for outdoor eating and entertaining. There is an outside shower area, large BBQ and wood fired outside oven. The house has its own water source and is powered by Solar Voltaic panels located on the gatehouse giving it excellent environmental credentials. The location commands spectacular sea views from Siracuse to the furthest South Eastern tip of Sicily. Noto is the nearest historic town and a Unesco world heritage site.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We wanted to say how much we enjoyed our holiday in Sicily. The house was just perfect. Not just in positioning; sea views and moon rise to the rear and sunset to the front. The house was as luxurious as you had originally intended.. We really enjoyed exploring the land around and it made for fruitful firewood hunts..Sean and I enjoyed breakfasts at Cafe Sicily, swimming in the gloriously warm sea, and a sofa each for reading our books. London. Emily London, Oct 2010.

I just wanted to tell you what a great time we had at your place in Sicily...It really was a perfect place for us to enjoy a family holiday and time went by only too quickly...

The table tennis was fantastic. The barbeque spot is perfect..I felt like a celebrity chef whilst sipping beers and cooking up feasts. Paul, London July 2013.

One of our favorite places to visit

  • 5 of 5

This house is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday in Southeast Sicily. It is in a very quiet (a decent drive on track roads), beautiful location with sea views. The home is simple, well designed and absolutely perfect. The pool couldn't be more stunning, Tom is a fantastic host, and it is very useful to have Giovanni nearby as a caretaker. It works perfectly for two families-- to give privacy on each side of the communal area. We love the location-- great for day trips to beaches or an excursion up to Siracusa. We've been before and we will be back!

Belle maison mais piscine fermée

  • 3 of 5

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind comments about the house and apologies over the misunderstanding about the pool. We don't open the pool before early May and this is typical of most holiday houses. Our pool is very large and typically takes several days to get the water in perfect condition for swimming and Giovanni , who looks after the pool, assumed you wouldn't want people around this long during your stay. We have made it very clear on our listing and within the house notes that the pool is open between May and September to avoid any confusion or disappointment in the future.

Sicilian splendour

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a fantastic stay in Sicily at Calcicera Alta. The property was exactly as expected - high quality furniture and fittings inside and the most amazing terrace and separate pool area outside. A remote location for some, but the fantastic view and being only 30 mins away from fantastic beaches and the regional centre of Noto more than make up for this. I would thoroughly recommend a stay here if you are visiting the region.

Serenity getaway

  • 4 of 5

Little can I say to convey the serenity one feels staying at this beautiful country house. Generous inside out is the perfect get away. Ample space to sleep, expand, isolate or connect. Beautiful views, lavender smells, balance everywhere. Tom was a real pleasure to communicate with, always responsive with detailed guidelines and great suggestions on where to go eat and drink. A GPS would be most helpful especially if arriving at night. One of the few places I would return back to. Thank you so much for sharing!

Little bit of paradise in Sicily

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in this beautiful house overlooking the Vendicari Nature Reserve in Sicily. It is comfortable and spacious, with everything that is needed for a relaxing holiday in the sunshine. Amazing view and large swimming pool, kids loved every minute. Difficult access on farm road, but worth following directions to this little piece of rural paradise! Property was very clean and well maintained. Owner was more than helpful and generous with everything at the property, even including pool toys. I would highly recommend to friends. Good place from which to explore ancient sites and fabulous markets of Syracuse for fresh produce. Highly recommended.

Location

From the Owner

We bought the land first and then built the house and landscaped around the house over the following few years. The location has amazing views and it is remote and peaceful whilst being close enough to neighbours, shops, beaches and local towns and villages to be convenient and practical.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Catania at 80 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Pozzallo at 30 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Vendicari Nature Reserve at 6 Kilometres Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

The coast and surrounding beaches are about 5 miles away and can be reached by car in 20 minutes. There is the choice of the many beaches on the nature reserve or the more tourist orientated and private beaches towards San Lorenzo and Lido di Noto. There are some wonderful beaches all around the South East coast for those who are happy to explore further a field. There is useful info and guidance on eating, shopping and places to see and visit in the house.

Travel:

A car is essential. Catania is the nearest airport and about 1 hour by car and

Palermo is a 3 hour drive. There is a ferry service that goes from Pozzallo to Malta about 40 mins away. Siracuse is also about 40 mins away by car with regular ferries to mainland Italy.

Distances:

Noto is the nearest historic town and a Unesco world heritage site. It is about 20 minutes by car. Rosolini and Pacchino are both 20 -25 minutes by car and Siracuse about 40 minutes. Catania is about an hour, Modica, Ragusa, Scigli and Pollazallo also about an hour.

Further Details:

The closest supermarkets are in Rosolini and Noto. There is a very good small supermarket on the main road before Noto called Sipiu and a good selection of butchers and fishmongers in Noto, Rosolini and Pacchino. There is an amazing food market in Siracuse and a world famous one in Catania where all the locals buy their produce. There is useful info and helpful tips for local shopping in the house. We can arrange to pre stock the fridge by request.
