About Ruth & Jon Saunders

Originally from East Sussex, we made a life-style change from hectic lives in publishing and property management to our tranquil valley in the glorious South Hams. We had visited South Devon many times on holiday, and it always felt like we were in the best place in the world. We thought it would be a wonderful area to bring up our young family, so in 1998 we were lucky enough to find Dittiscombe farmhouse with six cottages and 20 acres of land.

Twenty years and lots of hard work and commitment later we have a thriving holiday cottage business in a very special place!

Ruth & Jon Saunders purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Ruth & Jon Saunders chose Kingsbridge

The land surrounding the farmhouse and cottages was originally farmed but we are interested in wildlife conservation and eco-tourism. So over the years we have rewilded the valley, adding a 10 acre woodland with paths, ponds and flower banks. We endeavour to sensitively managed our surrounding land to provide a wildlife haven, providing home to many diverse species of animals and plants, which can be enjoyed exclusively by our guests. This is very much at the heart of our business.

Guests have exclusive use of the valley, nature walk, ponds, meadows and woodland trails which they can access from their cottage gardens.

We live in the farmhouse so are on hand to help guests and answer questions. Ruth will also take visiting children on the Dittiscombe wildlife detective trail on request.

Also, we love dogs! We have a wonderful rescued collie called Kes, and we welcome guests with dogs in five of our six cottages.

What makes this cottage unique

We are surrounded by the rolling hills of South Devon, and are just a 10 minute drive to the unspoilt beaches of Start Bay and the South West Coast Path. We have a green lane walk from our farmhouse door to Slapton village which has two excellent pubs, a small village store plus the Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve which is great for birdwatching.

We are in a central location within the South Hams area as Kingsbridge, Totnes, Salcombe and Dartmouth are no more than 30 minutes drive away, and each town has its own unique qualities.

Each cottage has it's own garden with a lawn and gravel or patio area and garden furniture. The gardens have lovely views of Dittiscombe's private conservation valley which is managed and maintained for the enjoyment of our guests. Willows is dog-friendly, sleeps 6 in 4 bedrooms, enclosed garden, view
average rating of 4.0 based on 5 reviews

Quality cottage centrally located.

  • 4 of 5

Clean and well equipped, plenty of room on ground floor with kitchen particularly good for storage, owners living on site, good choice of games if raining, a lot of thought has gone into the arrangements generally. Paths in the wooded area are kept mown so walks in wet weather still possible. Nice to have people in other cottages, particularly if chidren included, but you can remain in isolation if you wish. The location is very central so can strike off in any direction. Good that Tesco etc can deliver online orders which owners will put in cottage if necessary (with items in the fridge if appropriate - that extra personalisation touch).
