About the property

Beautiful country house in 9 acres of grounds, in a fabulous location overlooking Lough Corrib

The property is a single storey country house in 9 acres of garden and woodland. It stands at the foot of Mount Gable looking south over the beautiful Lough Corrib, with its own foreshore. A mountain stream flows at either side of the gardens. The house has recently been renovated, and has two large double bedrooms, each with an ensuite shower room, two twin rooms and a ‘bunk’ room each with a refitted bathroom nearby. The house has a new and substantial kitchen with a large dining area and a table to seat up to 12 people. There is also a large sun room/conservatory, a play room (which also has fold out beds) and a sitting room. It is a large comfortable holiday house with real character and some history and is ideal for a large family or even two families to enjoy at any time of the year. It is ideally situated for fishing, and is an excellent base for those who wish to enjoy the beautiful lakes mountains and coastline of the West of Ireland. At the same time the grounds are fantastic for adventurous children who want to explore, build dens and make campfires.

About Nial Dunne

The house has been with the same family since the 1930s. The 5 Brothers who share the ownership have spent many family holidays at the house and decided to keep the house on because of its unique character and location. Now they and their families and friends often take holidays at the house and they have many friends locally. The house has recently been refurbished and modernised but retains its warmth and character so whether it is family football on the front lawn, catching trout in the small stream, building dens and campfires in the woodland at the back, exploring the lake and islands or touring the beauty of Connemara and the beaches, this is a wonderful place to stay.

Nial Dunne purchased this house in 1930

Why Nial Dunne chose County Galway

This is a family house and has been with the same family since the 1930's. It was bought originally as a fishing lodge. There is also some history to the houses that were previously on the same site. While the area is fairly remote and beautiful, it is less than an hour to the dynamic city of Galway and about an hour from Knock airport. So the beauty and remoteness of the area are now within easy reach of most parts of the UK.

What makes this house unique

The property is set in a wonderful location looking over Lough Corrib, with its own lake foreshore and surrounded by acres of woodland and garden and with mountain streams running through the garden and down to the lake. There is a mountain at the back and an old road with fabulous walks and views looking to the mountains in the West. It is however conveniently located with villages about 2 miles away in either direction. Cornamona has a grocery shop and a pub. Clonbur has a mini supermarket (with an ATM), and several pubs and restaurants. The city of Galway offers a great deal and is less than an hour away. Going West from the house you are immediately into the wild and beautiful lakes and mountains scenery, and fabulous beaches of Connemara and the West of Ireland.

Absolutely superb house with everything possible provided.

  • 5 of 5

This would have to be the best house we have stayed in over the years - nine of us ages 19 - 94! Lounge/sun room/kitchen so spacious and comfortable. Kitchen has everything you could want and more for cooking for a big group. Heating when needed (mid September) worked instantly and hot water supply excellent. Bedrooms worked well with plenty of extra bedding possible. The house has lots of character and the location is great for access to superb countryside. Local walks and villages for the less active and strenuous ones in the Twelve Bens and Maumturks for the more energetic. Nial's instructions and communications were prompt and extremely helpful. Highly recommended and hope to be back one day. Thank you.

Great location for visiting Connemara

  • 4 of 5

It's a good spot. There were only three of us so lots of room. A great kitchen, lots of spots to sit and read and easy drives to Clifden, Kylemore Abbey, Ashford Castle.

Carrick Hse. Review

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Carrick Hse in August 2014 and had a truly wonderful holiday. The house has a special character and has a feeling of a home rather than a holiday rental. The facilities in Carrick Hse are excellent, the kitchen a chef's dream. Breakfast on the veranda with a magical view of Lough Corrib, or watch the sun set from the beautifully designed sunroom. Our children enjoyed rowing on the lake, (very reasonable rental rates close to the house) Lovely house for an active holiday or simply to relax in the house or at the lake shore across the road.

Wonderful house

  • 5 of 5

The house was just as advertised - only better. It was extremely well fitted - everything we needed was there, and more. The kitchen was a dream and has a long table which seats 12 .

The garden was ideal for the younger members of the family to play in and the wood with a stream running through it, at the back of the house gave great enjoyment. The outlook over the lake was lovely and we all had a wonderful holiday

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your feedback. Your words wonderfully reflect how we think of the house..... and as young children we remembered the house. We have tried to upgrade it but to still keep the character of the property. The garden as you say is an adventure playground for children. Thank you again and so pleased that you had a lovely week.

The fjord at Killary Harbour and Leenane is about 15 miles away (30 minutes drive) and a further 5-6 miles are glorious beaches at Glassilaun. There are any other beautiful beaches along the West Coast and other recommendations would include the beaches near Roundstone (40 minutes), and at Omey Island (about an hours drive). There is also a sandy beach at Lough Nafooey about 8 miles away from the house.

A car is essential. Knock Airport (flights from many UK and some continental airports) is about an hour away. Shannon Airport is 2-2.5 hours away. Galway is an hour away. If travelling by car - it is approx 4 hours from Dublin.

Clonbur has a small and very good supermarket, good pubs and restaurants 2 miles.

Cornamona has a shop and a pub 2 miles.

Cong (Historic small town most well known for being in the film 'The Quiet Man' but also for an old Abbey and Ashford Castle Hotel.

Ballinrobe has several supermarkets inc Tesco 8 miles.

The historic and dynamic city of Galway is 30 miles away.

The lovely town of Westport is approx 30 miles away.

Further Details:

There are cinemas, bowling alleys, swimming pools in Galway. Westport also has a swimming pool. There are many excellent restaurants in Galway. Clonbur, Cong and Ballinrobe have some good pubs serving good food. Banks and supermarkets in Ballinrobe and Galway. There is an ATM in Clonbur (2 miles). Lough Corrib and the adjacent Lough Mask are world renowned trout and salmon fishing lakes. Boats can be hired about 300 metres away. It is also well worth hiring a boat to explore the islands. The lakes and mountains of Connemara are only a few miles away and can be seen in the distance. They are well worth exploring. The West Coast beaches are fabulous.

There are beautiful walks from the house and a short but steep walk up the hill behind accesses the old road (no cars) which has stupendous views over the Corrib. There are very entertaining race meetings at Ballinrobe and at Galway through late spring / summer. Connaught rugby play at Galway. There is often music (Trad or Country) in the bars and pubs. In Galway this is daily, and locally at some of the pubs.
