16th Century Thatched Cottage With Large Garden

Overview

Property

Updated: 07-Dec-2016
Cottage in Ebbesbourne Wake, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, UK - Peaceful Location In An Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The Blue Cottage nestles beneath a hill, surrounded by a large sunny garden with rough-cut grass, plenty of trees, and views across pasture land. It is approached by a very short track, shared by one other house, and feels completely secluded, although it is very near the village centre with its church and pub. The main part of the cottage was built in the 16th century, with thick cob walls and a large inglenook fireplace. An extension was built in the 17th century, which has resulted in a most unusual layout to the second bedroom, which is partly divided in two by the original end wall of the cottage. A further one-storey extension was built in the first half of the 20th century at the back, which includes the kitchen and bathroom. It is available for holiday lets from Saturday to Saturday throughout the year and for short lets during the autumn, winter and spring, when you can curl up in front of the wood-burning stove and the thick walls keep out the cooler weather.

Blue Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was warm and cosy on our arrival and within just minutes we felt very much at home.

It is well equipped with all that you will need for a very comfortable stay.

Being very very old, Blue Cottage is also a really interesting place to stay - after all, it is not often that have the opportunity to experience living in such an old cottage.

The setting is delightfully rural and it's location is very convenient for sightseeing etc.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for writing such a lovely review! I'm so glad you had such a good time and liked the cottage so much. I think it has the best of both worlds, being very convenient for the pub and, as you say, for sightseeing, but also feeling so quiet and secluded. I hope you consider booking again! Best wishes, Jessica

Very nice and out of the way

  • 4 of 5

Picked a long weekend in February and was very pleased with the cottage .

Had some nice walks all around the area friendly people around and the Horseshoes pup was not only handy but served some great food and very friendly also.

This is ideal for anyone who wants just a quiet stay in a lovely part of the countryside away from it all.

We will be back.

Owner's Response: Hello Chris and Steph. I'm so glad you liked the cottage so much. I think one of the big advantages of the cottage is that it's so quiet while still being a very easy walk to a good pub! We're always startled by how very dark it is at night. Looking forward to welcoming you back! Best wishes, Jessica

Rural idyll!

  • 5 of 5

The Blue Cottage is a delight - every bit as charming as in the pictures! All the booking arrangements went smoothly, with prompt and friendly attention from Jessica, the owner, and the cottage was warm and welcoming on arrival, with everything we needed for a cosy and comfortable stay. The village pub lived up to its excellent reputation for food and service, and we enjoyed several frosty walks up the surrounding hills - the views of Salisbury Plain are stunning when you get to the top! And Salisbury itself is well worth a visit - head for the Central car park. We would recommend the cottage to anyone who enjoys peace and quiet in the country, and look forward to our next visit.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed the cottage so much! We stayed just before you and went on a long walk up to the ridge between Shaftesbury and Salisbury. We hadn't done that walk before but will definitely do it again. Looking forward to hearing from you again! Jessica

Lovely stay at Blue Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed three nights and would have loved to stay longer, in fact we've already booked for another weekend! It's tucked away in the countryside yet a short drive and you're in Salisbury or Shaftesbury. You can walk to the village pub and further out across fields, with several public walks to follow. The cottage is really cosy, great inglenook fireplace with wood-burning stove. Good size kitchen. The twin bedroom works well, with one end almost separated from the other, so the children have a little privacy. The cottage is full of character, thick walls, thatched roof, plus comfortable furnishings that fit with the character of the cottage. We're looking forward to returning!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review. I'm so glad you loved the cottage so much and am looking forward to welcoming you back! We also feel it's ideally situated - it feels secluded while actually being within a few minutes walk of the pub and with many places to visit a short drive away. As a child I loved the second bedroom and the privacy is good for adults too!

Lovely cottage and reasonably well equipped. Very Warm.Would only request that some of the info sheets are updated a little and a new kettle as it leaks.Lovely fireplace and oven works well. Couldn't do much in garden as November.Lovely and friendly pub nearby.Needed more time to totally chill out.Would recommend.Beds comfy though the bed in the twin bedded room in the back of the twin bedroom was a little high.Good stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for writing such a good review. I'm so glad you enjoyed your holiday so much! Thank you also for drawing our attention to the kettle - Ros has it in hand. It's a very good idea about the info. We'll take the laptop with us when we next visit and rewrite it. I think the fireplace is one of the highlights of the cottage, both because a real fire is so nice and also because it's so big! When my parents bought the cottage after the last war, there was a tiny Victorian grate, but they realised there was a huge inglenook behind because of the chimney breast upstairs. I really hope you'll book again! Best wishes, Jessica

Nice holiday

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is comfortable und very quiet. It is ideal for relaxation and a good starting point for discovering the South of England. It is equipped with all comforts. Especially we appreciated the fireplace on cool evenings. We have enjoyed the holiday very much.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for writing such a lovely review. We're delighted you enjoyed the cottage and your holiday so much. We also love the peace and quiet of the cottage and lighting the wood-burning stove in the evening is always a great pleasure! Although I've been visiting the cottage all my life, we're always finding new places to visit - though there are some places we like to visit year after year. I do hope you decide to stay at the Blue Cottage again! Best wishes, Jessica

Location

From the Owner

I inherited the Blue Cottage from my parents, who bought it shortly after the 2nd World War. It was then in a very derelict condition. We lived abroad when I was a child and we used it whenever we came back to England. We started letting it out about 20 years ago. I love it, which is why we have kept it, despite not being able to get down there as often as we would like. The Chalke Valley is very quiet and unspoilt, with wonderful views from all the hills.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The stunning Dorset coast, with its sandy beaches, rocky coves and fossils is about an hour's drive away.

Travel:

A car is useful but not necessary. There is a bus service to Shaftesbury and Salisbury. There are airports at Bournemouth and Southampton, just under an hour away. The nearest passenger ferry is Poole, just under an hour away.

Distances:

Salisbury and Shaftesbury are both 10 miles away. There are village shops in Sixpenny Handley (6 miles), Tisbury (5 miles) and Wilton (7 miles). Stonehenge is 20 miles away.

Further Details:

The Blue Cottage is in the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is ideally situated to explore not only the surrounding area, with its unspoilt villages and hill-top walks, but also the wonderful old towns of Salisbury and Shaftesbury, the stately homes of Longleat and Wilton House and the archaeological monuments of Salisbury plain. Many of our visitors use it as a base to visit the Dorset coast, the New Forest, Glastonbury and Bath and Wells.
