Wonderful time had ...

  • 5 of 5

The 2 bedroom gite run by Mandy and Glenn was wonderful. Better equipped than anywhere else we have stayed - including sharp knives, picnic bag, Tupperware and a potato peeler! Bedding was all John Lewis. Gite was very clean and Glenn and Mandy take a lot of pride in how they present it to their guests.

The pool was lovely and refreshing - great depth for little ones. The barn had table tennis and archery, which we all enjoyed. The shared bbq was well used, but we could also bbq in the privacy of our gite if we wished to.

We went on a couple of bike rides with the kids - there is nearly no traffic, so that was lovely. Glenn arranged bike hire for us before we arrived.

Glenn and Mandy made the stay though. They were so kind, thoughtful, helpful and really good with our children (aged 5 and 6). They were not intrusive but were there when we needed them. Nothing was any trouble.

Thank you for a lovely holiday and we hope to return in the future!

Owner's Response: Dear Ella and Family What a lovely review and thank you for taking the time to write one. It is so pleasing to get such positive feedback, particularly on the how well equiped the gite was. We are always looking at ways to improve things further, just so that we dont become complacent. It was an absolute pleasure to have you stay with us and the two youngsters were great fun to have around the place. We would really like to see you visit us again, so until next time. Best wishes Glen and Mandy

Simply the best

  • 5 of 5

Chaunay Gites are situated just outside of Chaunay in a quiet and relaxing but easy to find location.

We were warmly welcomed by the owners, who showed us to our 2 bedroomed Gite which has been completely renovated to a high standard. The photos simply do not do it justice. The Gite was spotlessly clean and nothing was out of place. The beds were very comfortable with high quality linens and bedding was also of a high quality especially the pillows. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a BBQ in our own private outside seating area that looks across the garden area.

The remaining outside area is shared with the one bedroomed Gite. There is a badminton area, boules area and a fabulous barn area that contains communal seating, BBQ and table tennis. Adjacent to the barn is the outdoor pool which was maintained by the owners every day. It was lovely to relax around the pool on the sun loungers, the owners have ensured that there are plenty of sun loungers around the pool area so that you can relax either in the sun or in the shade.

The owners Glen and Mandy live onsite in the main house, but have the perfect balance are being there if you need them but also giving you your space. They also recommended places to visit and where best to shop for groceries and petrol too.

We can wholeheartedly recommend staying at Chaunay Gites as the best Gites to stay at.

Owner's Response: Well Mr and Mrs E.....what can we say, other than thank you very much, and please come back again. It was an absolute pleasure having you with us and the entertainment given to us by the boys was memorable. They are two great characters and it was great to hear their 'chat' of an evening in the barn. As I have mentioned in previous replies we have more improvements to make, but it is very encouraging to get great feedback in what is our first year of running gites. However, we have been blessed with great guests throughout last summer, and that goes a long way to making things enjoyable for us too. Best wishes Glen and Mandy

A class above the rest

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at this beautiful property to a very warm welcome from Mandy and Glen. We stayed in the one bedroom cottage which was absolutely perfect. It is tastefully furnished to a very high standard and everything has been carefully thought out with attention today. It still retains it's rustic charm with the addition of modern facilities. There was even a welcome pack included with beer and wine. Each cottage has its own barbecue area for privacy however there is also a large open barn with barbecue facilities for the guests to use. The large pool is so inviting and there is plenty of room with sun beds surrounding aswell as a vey big garden area. Mandy and Glen are fabulous hosts and go out of their way to ensure you have the very best holiday. We even enjoyed a few glasses of wine together. There are also some lovely restaurants just a short drive away which were recommended. Fantastic stay and will definitely be returning.

The holiday for us 4 adults had its first huccup when my sat.nav.took me off the motorway and into a small town around 25 minutes away from where we were staying.Glen Fowler the owner of the gites was always at hand to help with directions.Eventually,he had to rescue us from another small town nearer to him.Glen was very helpful.Once at the property,we were introduced to our gite.It was very well presented, modern decor, nice and light and cosy. The lounge was large enough for us 4.there were small games like dominoes and cards(just in case rain kept us in),and a television and digibox with English channels. The bedrooms were nicely furnished and not cluttered with lots of unneccessary furniture.A very good balance. The bathroom with shower was tiled, and everything was at hands reach. The kitchenette area was nicely presented with all cutlery, crockery, pots and pans, chopping boards etc.A real home from home.Linen was provided, including guest, bath, and poolside towels, and sun loungers. There were even plastic glasses for use at the pool,as glass was forbidden.A good safety piece there Glen. The pool was a very welcoming sight as we had 8 days of unspoilt sunshine ranging between 18 celsius and 23 celsius.A word of warning though, make sure your mobile phone is not in your swimming trunk pocket before entering the pool.I forgot!! There were a host of outdoor activities including badminton on the lawn, table tennis under the modernised barn,or just relaxing under the barn at the table and chairs. The gardens added to the enjoymentt as there were fruit trees of various types, including juicy plums and passion fruit.Free wi fi added to the attraction.any problems, and Glen was always on hand, being on site during our stay.Children would love seeing the baby lizards sunbathing by the pool.If you wanted to know where the supermarket was,Glen was the man to ask.If you wanted a reccomendation for a good restaurant,Glen was the man to ask.Several towns were visited including Melle,Ruffec,Saint Sauvant(where we have friends living),Lusignan,Lezay(where a tuesday market is a must see!),and of course,Chaunay. We all enjoyed our holiday, Glens hospitality, help, and fellowship when we met each other going out or coming in.We will definitely stay at L'Escapade again. If i could sum up everything in one word,it would be MAGNEFIQUE.

Owner's Response: Dear Guests Thank you very much for your fantastically detailed review. We have been really lucky with most of our guests taking the time to give us a review, and you guys are no exception. It was a real joy seeing you use the facilities to their full, and the best bit was the request to turn the barn into an indoor badminton court, as the heat and the breeze on the outdoor court was hampering your game. It would be a real pleasure to have all of you back with us in future, and hopefully it will be an even better experience with the updates we have planned for the pool and barn area. One thing for sure is that at least you know not to follow the route that the lady on the sat nav suggests, and you will get off to a much less stressful start to your holiday. We look forward to seeing you all again. Glen and Mandy

Beautiful, characterful and stylish

  • 5 of 5

A lovely discovery in a beautiful and peaceful rural French setting. The house, garden and gites are idyllic and in a beautiful and traditional style. The gites themselves were lovely characterful buildings but had contemporary and tasteful fittings with all the mod cons you need, blended with tasteful modern 'rustic' furniture. Everything was pristine and looked new and up-to-date.

The swimming pool was a good size and great to laze by and the surrounding villages and countryside were great to visit and enjoy, and if you like star spotting, the evening sky was incredible.

We were made to feel very welcome by our hosts who truly made it a home from home and ensured we had everything we needed to have a lovely holiday. I would highly recommend Chauney Gites to anyone.

Owner's Response: Hi Stephen Thank you for your review it is great to get such brilliant feedback. I really hope that we can see you all here again as you were all such great company. If you do come back then we have scouted some more restaurants in fantastic settings. We are really lucky to be surrounded by so many treasures. Even so, we have been back twice to the Hotel du Commerce in Civray, since you left us. And yes......I had my favourite dessert on both occasions. Best wishes Glen

Nice and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a very relaxing and peaceful holiday stay at l'Escapade. We were welcomed with a cold beer by hosts Glen and Mandy which set us up for a great week after a long drive down. There is always an element of pot luck when selecting a holiday gite on line and we are never exactly sure what we are going to get until we arrive. In this case we certainly weren't disappointed. The cottage was as described but had recently been refurbished so the condition of the accommodation was good and is very much as shown in the photos. The cottage is functional rather than large but all that we needed. What sold the whole thing for us was the large open barn area adjacent to the pool. This provided generous covered area with a large table and chairs and a nearby bar-b-que and we were able to sit outside in the barn every day and enjoy an evening meal cooked on the bar-b-que. (ok then we did go out one night). The swimming pool was clean and spacious especially as we were the only ones using it.

Unlike some Gites, everything was included. There was a welcome pack which included bread, wine, milk, coffee and biscuits. The bed linen and towels were all provided; there were even fresh towels halfway through the stay. Finally I would note that all the cleaning was allowed for with no supplementary charges and other than a quick tidy up we were able to just walk out of the Gite when it was time to leave.

The barn area contained a table tennis table and there was a boules set available. While we were there, Glen our host, marked out the badminton court on the grassed area. The Gite itself is set away from the main house and the other cottage on the site so is detached with its own area with a table outside.

The purpose of our stay was to explore the area and we found lots to do including the famous Futuroscope. This is well worth a visit and especially if you stay on for the light show at the end of the day (starts at 22:15). Also worth a visit is Poitiers itself. Poitiers is only half an hour up the road although Futuroscope is a further half hour around the ring road! Also worthy of a visit is the Valley of the Monkeys this is only about a 20 minute drive away.

We didn’t venture out to any nearby restaurants although Glen and Mandy had a couple of local favourites that they can recommend.

We were very happy with this Gite and would certainly recommend it to anyone else looking to visit this area.
