About the property

4 Bedroomd, 2 Bath/Showers, Private Pool, Village Location

Le Moulin de l'Abbaye is conveniently located on the village outskirts, idyllically peaceful and surrounded by the rural countryside of the Charente. Le Moulin is the perfect setting to unwind, chill out and enjoy a barbecue and glass of wine on the shady veranda. Your very own private, constant 1.25m deep pool now has Roman Steps and has sunloungers and tables. The large expanse of level grounds offer the option for most types of ball games. Across the road is a tennis court, running track, basketball/boules courts and an adventure playground for small children. The area abounds in country walks and cycle rides - details available from the tourist office in the nearby historic town of Villebois-Lavalette, which also has a supermarket, restaurants and other services. Idealy situated for visits to the Dordogne, Atlantic coast, Futuroscope, local river beaches and many more attractions, 4 golf courses are nearby. Le Moulin is centrally located between 5 low cost airports and 300 fast miles from Caen.

About Sue Smith

We live in Leeds and are now both retired after successful careers in commerce. We are true Francophiles and spend as much time as possible in France. In our younger days, we would pack up the car with our tent and roam the French countryside for our annual holidays. After progressing to self catering accommdation we decided to buy our own house.

Sue Smith purchased this house in 1991

Why Sue Smith chose Charente

In 1990, along with my sister and young family, we rented a house in the general area of Ronsenac and loved the area so much we decided this was where our French house should be. After the South of France, the Charente has the highest number of hours of sunshine in France. In February of 1991 we looked at around 20 houses and fell in love with Le Moulin, in the sleepy, historical village of Ronsenac. The area has sites dating back to the 100 years war, a good example being the source of our stream in the village centre, which is a well seeping from some underground source. Although the locality is now being discovered by more holidaymakers, it is still away from the more touristy, but still accessible, area's such as the Atlantic Coast, and Dordogne.

What makes this house unique

When we arrive at Le Moulin, we always look round and think - is this really our's. The peace and tranquillity are the first things we remember, next is the pure, clean air. The extensive grounds, mostly grass, but with some area's of planting which we have created over the years, are next to excite our senses. Finally, the swimming pool - installed in 2007 beckons in its secluded corner of the garden. The house has been sympathetically renovated to retain features dating back to the 12c and is now a wonderfull, spacious, comfortable, family house, our second home. Now served by motorways and dual carriageways from the ferries down to Angouleme, the journey is now much faster.

Beautiful ancient La Rochelle (about 110 miles) is a great day out for sight seeing, shopping and eating round the old harbour.

Further Details:

The nearest supermarket, bank, pharmacie, restaurants, doctors and a Saturday market are in Villebois-Lavalette. (two miles). Bar in village.. Our favourite restaurant is at Les Tourbieres, the site of old peat diggings which are now a nature reserve. Be entertained by the inhabitants of the pools as you eat.

Brantome is a 'must visit' with its bustling Friday market, beautiful monastery and ancient town on the banks of the river Dronne. Cognac has its distillery visits, including Hennessay, Remy-Martin, Martel and our favourite, the lesser known, Otard. Aubeterre has an under ground monlithic church, a square with colourful cafes and a puppet theatre. In summer there are canoes on the river Dronne. Angouleme, the capital of the Charente has a cathedral, quaint narrow streets in the old town, paper museum and in September vintage car races round the old ramparts. Leave early and take a picnic to Futuroscope to see the amazing IMAX 3D cinemascope shows and life like simulations. Nearby is Vallee des Singes (Monkey Valley) which is also very interesting.

Oradour sur Glane is a poignant reminder of a World War 2 Nazi atrocity when almost all the inhabitants were killed and the village burned. It has been left as it was as a memorial.

Close enough to the Dordogne to visit the incredible cave paintings at Lascaux, the medieval market town of Sarlat, the bastides on the river Dordogne (Domme is a very good example) and the prehistoric cave dwelings at Les Eyzies.

Details of many more places of interest, things to do, local markets and maps left by our visitors can be found at Le Moulin.

Our caretakers live about 30 minutes away and are contactable should the need arise. Steve will cut the grass before or during your visit and the pool is cleaned and checked weekly. Le Moulin is on mains drainage and the large 300 litre hot water tank should be suffient for your daily needs. Le Moulin is a non smoking house.

Our beautiful house offers flexible accommodation and the two downstairs bedrooms make an ideal, self contained family unit. Some parts of the house date back to the 12c when it was the water mill for the ancient Abbey in the village and retain some exposed beamed ceilings. The 48 square metre lounge/dining room has comfortable seating round a feature fireplace with open log burning fire, one of the settee's converts to a kingsize bed and a large dining table which will accommodate 10 people. The house has cost effective electric central heating with individualy controlled radiators in each room. An extra childs bed is possible in bedroom 4. For your safety, there are smoke alarms, fire extingushers and a fire blanket. The swimming pool is surrounded by a fully compliant safety fence and self locking gate. There is ample extensive parking in the courtyard with log shed and garage. From the veranda there are extensive views of the village, the Abbey and surrounding countryside. No Pets Outside: There is a large shady patio accessible from the lounge, with large table and chairs and the BBQ for alfresco dining. The flat grounds extend to one acre, bounded by the mill stream, and are ideal for ball games. We have a stunning 10m by 5m, 1.25m constant depth swimming pool with Roman steps, just for you, surrounded by a patio with sunloungers and small tables, enclosed by a gated safety fence. Although it is not heated it has been known to reach 30c. There is ample parking in the courtyard. Across the road is a children's adventure playground, tennis, boule and basketball courts, a running track and football pitch. Utility Room: Automatic washing machine, fridge/freezer, vacuum cleaner, baby bath and high chair. Cleaning products. Toys for garden. BBQ utensils. Spare gas bottle. Cleaning / Towels / Linen : The house will be cleaned before your arrival and beds made to your requirements. If you stay is more than one week, additional sets of bedding will be supplied. Sets of towels can be hired at additional cost (see notes on prices above).

Le Moulin de l'Abbaye, A Very Large and Comfortable House with Private Pool
average rating of 5.0 based on 6 reviews

Lovely property in a beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful stay, Le Moulin de l'Abbey was very well equipped for all the family. The information we were sent prior to our holiday was outstanding, very accurate and full of personal touches from the owners which really enhanced our stay. The house and grounds were very well maintained. The garden and stream was beautiful, saw lots of wildlife. Lots of good local information, plenty of pretty places to visit even though at the time of year we visited a lot of places were closed, this didn't detract from our holiday just added to the tranquillity. The owners have been very friendly and responsive if we've had any enquiries.

I would recommend this property to others and would like to return ourselves in the summer months so we can make use of the pool and enjoy this wonderful house and area again.

Fantastic Property with private pool

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Le Moulin de l'Abbaye with our family. We were a party of 6 adults and 2 children (aged 7 and 3) and the property was a very generous size. With the huge garden, terrace and pool it is a perfect place to relax. We didn't do a great deal of exploring the area but we hope to be back in the future to do this. The information provided by the owners is very comprehensive and there seems to be lots of interesting places to visit.

The property was very clean and well maintained and is like home from home. We would highly recommend this property to anyone and hopefully be back soon.

Amazing and relaxing summer house

  • 5 of 5

" Le Moulin De L' Abbaye is an amazing, relaxing, wonderful and comfortable setting - these are just some of the words that describe our stay at such a great gite. The house was what we wanted within a village and countryside setting, all faciities and house were first class, the grounds, and swimming pool all made this a stunning and unmatchable place to stay. The location gives access to many surrounding picturesque places to eat, visit and explore with your kids, we throughly enjoyed our two weeks holiday here in July 2015.

We happily recommend this house and yes we are returning next year "

Fantastic Holiday

  • 5 of 5

What an excellent property, exactly as advertised, full of character, well furnished, fully equipped kitchen, a choice of 3 showers, plus bath & 2 toilets-so no falling out in the mornings, clean, safe and spacious with everything you might need for a relaxing holiday.

Outside, the star of the show was the swimming pool, where the kids especially seemed to live. We were very impressed by the safety fence and self-closing gate, typical of the general attention to safety which the owners have obviously prioritised throughout. Plenty of sunbeds and cushions surrounded the pool on wide patio areas for our relaxation. The rest of the garden extends to 1 acre which gave us every opportunity for games and bird and wild life watching from the shady patio. This also provided an excellent area for alfresco dining from the adjoining BBQ.

We enjoyed visits to Cognac, Aubeterre and Brantome-including the excellent market and a super canoe trip down the river to Bordeilles. David also hired a bike & spent time exploring the many VTT routes in the area, There are loads of other interesting sights & fun adventures within an hour’s drive which we didn’t explore–next time maybe. The supermarket in the historic town of Villebois Lavalette is only 5 mins drive and has everything you need for your holiday.

Wonderful place, we shall return.

Very homely and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

Just loved the peace and tranquility. Lots of space inside and out. Great for children to play outside, especially the little river running through the garden with the frogs and other wildlife. The pool is perfect, very well maintained and comfortable sunbeds with cushioned full length pads.
