About David Moore

Having becoming thoroughly enchanted by the Wye Valley whilst at University in Bristol in the late 90s and more recently whilst living and working in Bristol, I decided to move here in the summer of 2010.

I love holidaying in self-catering cottages in the UK and overseas and so when the opportunity of acquiring Spring Cottage - then a pretty but neglected cottage surrounded by beautiful woodland - presented itself I jumped at the opportunity and applied all that I had learnt that works (taking note of the many things that don't) in completely restoring the cottage and providing guests with a thoroughly contemporary and special holiday-cottage experience.

David Moore purchased this cottage in 2010

Why David Moore chose Saint Briavels

I love the Wye Valley - the forests carpeted with bluebells and primroses in the spring, the wild flower riverside meadows in the summer, the vistas from the top of the valley over the trees in the autumn and the crisp air and welcoming feel of a log burner in the winter - it truly is a place for all seasons!

What makes this cottage unique

Prices are fully inclusive and include: Egyptian Cotton bed linen with beds being made prior to your arrival. Thick 100% cotton set of towels per person. Hand soap, shampoo, loo paper for the bathroom. Generous supply of wood and kindling. For winter bookings, the fire will either be laid or lit prior to your arrival. Essential pantry items including tea, coffee, sugar, olive oil, salt, pepper etc. Washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets. Fresh herbs, apples and figs in the garden (seasonally available). Board games, books, DVDs, videos. Maps, walking guides and local information. Additionally, all our guests will receive: Welcome pack including locally laid eggs and freshly baked bread.

Beautiful little cottage

  • 5 of 5

Pretty, quaint and secluded up a long narrow lane with just a handful of properties around. Nestled in amongst the trees with lovely views this cottage ticked all the boxes for us, a village pub and not far from tintern, monmouth and chepstow. A beautiful place to stay

Beautiful cosy cottage

  • 5 of 5

Spring Cottage is beautiful. So cosy and in such a peaceful location. We found the cottage easily from directions given and managed the narrow lane! The cottage was clean and tidy and everything we needed was provided which is not always the case. Bread and eggs were much appreciated - as was the wood supply! We managed several muddy walks and our dog had a wonderful time too. We would definitely recommend your cottage to friends .

Thank you David

Lovely cottage with great walks in the woods from the doorstep

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable, well-equipped cottage at the end of a long single track road - a somewhat daunting drive the first time, but you get used to it. There’s a log burning stove which is very welcome on cold, damp days. It’s just a short climb through the woods from the back door onto Offa’s Dyke path and there are endless paths to explore - our dog loved them, just as we did. Tintern Abbey is an impressive ruin in walking distance, and it’s an easy drive to either Chepstow or Monmouth for good restaurants. The Misbah in Monmouth is a curry house which is a cut above most and Newbridge on Usk 15-20 miles across the hills is a great place right on the river for a special lunch or dinner.

Lovely cottage in a beautiful area but with access not for the faint hearted driver

  • 5 of 5

Blessed with beautiful weather and outstanding countryside the cottage was ideal for our requirements with a secure garden and dog walking from the door. The access lane unfortunately discouraged use of the car though for us this was not a major issue during our short stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind comments and I am glad you enjoyed your stay. The lane to the cottage is a single car width and does seem a bit narrower at this time of the year as the hedges fill out. In the absence of the Council doing this any more, I will be cutting them back myself this weekend.

Brockweir is situated approximately 20 miles from Bristol and 30 miles from Cardiff, with access to both being via the M48 and M4. Both cities have airports serving domestic and international destinations.

The nearest train station is in Chepstow and there is a bus stop opposite Brockweir bridge (10 minute walk) which is mid-point on the Chepstow to Monmouth bus service.

Brockweir is a charming village on the eastern banks of the River Wye and on the edge of the Forest of Dean. It is situated in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between the Welsh Border towns of Chepstow and Monmouth, approximately two miles north of the village of Tintern with it’s famous Abbey. Whilst on the one hand remote, the village is also conveniently only 10 miles from the M48 Severn Bridge.

Further Details:

The Village Shop - Brockweir has it's own environmentally neutral, not-for-profit Community Store and Cafe selling essentials and local, seasonal produce. It is open seven days a week and can be reached in fifteen minutes by foot (5 minutes by car).

Brockweir Country Inn - The local pub serving wholesome pub food and a good selection of Ales is a ten minute walk from Spring Cottage (3 minute drive).

Walking - No doubt one of the great attractions of the area is the year-round walking, and many walks, short and long, are close at hand. The best known routes - Offa's Dyke Path and Wye Valley Walk - both pass through the village and it is a few moments walk from the cottage to join either.

Canoeing - A highlight of any visit to the Valley is canoeing or kayaking down the Wye on a warm summer's day. These can be rented in Monmouth or Symonds Yat.

Fishing - The Wye is renowned for it's fishing. Bigsweir Fishery (3 miles) own a beautiful 2 mile stretch of the Wye offering double bank fishing between March and October. Grange Springs Fishing Lakes (5 miles) and Big Well Fly Fishing (8 miles) offer lake based coarse and game fishing respectively.

For Children - Go Ape! (11 miles) is a great day out for children and adults alike. The ‘high-wire forest adventure’ involves following a giant obstacle course up in the trees using ladders, walkways, bridges and tunnels, together with zip lines, high ropes and swings.

Back on land and next to Go Ape is The Forest of Dean Family Cycle Trail which is a circular 11 mile cycle route through the beautiful Forest with numerous lakes providing great picnic spots.
