Overview

About the property

Apartment in Olhao, Eastern Algarve, Portugal - Old Town, 3 Mins Walk To Shops, Cafes, 7 Min Walk To Seafront And Famous Markets

5 * Property registered with the Portuguese authorities - (legal requirement since Dec 2014) AL number 20408/AL.

The property is situated in the old town on a double stand spanning three streets, less than 100m from the famous church of Nossa Senhora do Rosario. Built in 1698 with contributions from the fishermen, the church was the first stone building in the town. The town itself has smartened up considerably over the last few years and offers some interesting things to do. These include visiting the local fish market, which is very different to your supermarket fish counter at home. There is also an impressive aquarium. Or you can take a guided walk through the marshes and dunes that border the Ria Formosa lagoon. Other nice things to do include strolling through the gardens dedicated to Patrao Joaquim Lopez, (the founder of Portugal's lifeboat service) where you will find typical blue azulejos (tiles) illustrating the story of the treacherous sea journey from Olhao to Brazil in the Bom Sucesso in 1808. The town has a number of attractive old churches, including the Igreja Matriz which houses the Algarve's highest altar. There is some lovely architecture with cubist buildings and villas built by Europeans in the Moorish style. Olhao is where inexpensive ferries depart from the harbour for the nearby islands of Armona, Culatra and Farol, which, with their beautifully quiet sandy beaches, are one of Europe’s best kept secrets. A trip to any of these makes a pleasant excursion and the beaches are well worth a visit. Once at Armona, you can walk from the lagoon side to the ocean side of the island in about half an hour, past small beach houses on either side of the non-traffic pathway. Take a picnic if you choose.

Many say Olhão is one of the nicest towns along the coast. While many other coastal towns thrive mainly on tourism, Olhao has retained its original character with a strong Moorish influence and still functions as the main fishing port in the Algarve. The result is that it is very lively throughout the year in contrast to other tourist towns which are often quite dead outside the tourist season. Olhão is a town for people who like the real Portugal, its history and culture, the beautiful islands and beaches, the nature reserve and the beautiful hinterlands. So this is not the place for clubbers, loud bar lovers etc.

The 1.3 km promenade is one of the best in the whole Algarve, due to its green space, children’s play areas, the famous red brick buildings housing the covered daily (except Sundays) fish, fruit and vegetable markets, the local products/ outdoor market on Saturday and the many excellent cafés/coffee shops, bars and restaurants, serving everything from pizza, tapas to fantastic fresh seafood. Significant parts of the town have recently undergone extensive renovation including many of the largo or squares and this is still the case. Olhao is a pretty place to just lounge and drink a coffee/beer.

As prices in the restaurants are about the best in the Algarve, many tourists eat out, but guests who enjoy cooking can visit the markets and enjoy the exceptionally well equipped kitchen in which to prepare food in.

This large apartment sleeps 4. As soon as you enter the door you get an immediate feeling for the space and light within. This is something every guest has commented upon to us, the owners. The apartment boasts two very large outdoor terraces from which you can enjoy great views over the old town. This property offers exceptional outdoor space which you do not get in many other Olhao properties, comfort, luxury and character for discerning guests.

From the apartment, you can explore the shops in the cobbled walkways. With the seafront so close by, you can reach the main promenade through winding cobbled back streets in 5 minutes.

About The Owner

We are a South African family who moved to the United Kingdom in early 2000. We first purchased a beach cottage in Armona in 2006 recognising that it would offer us a lifestyle very close to that which we so enjoyed in South Africa; long hours of sunshine, relaxed lifestyle and lovely beaches nearby and this has certainly been the case. As time went by, we were very taken by the vibrancy of Olhao, the authenticity of the town, shabby chic we call it.... We particularly enjoy the markets and Saturday market day so decided to renovate a further property there which we are delighted to share with you. We are very familiar with both the island of Armona and the town of Olhao and feel we can offer you a rather unique experience.

The Owner purchased this apartment in 2009

Why The Owner chose Olhao region

On arrival at Faro airport, the majority of travellers will head west into the Algarve and a select few will do the opposite and head east. This is where the undisturbed beaches, rugged authentic fishing villages and the beautiful hinterland are to be found. Here the coastline hasn't been spoilt by ugly apartment buildings and you will not be tripping over groups of drunken folk, stag parties etc.

When we bought our house in Armona, it was only then that we discovered the real charm of Olhao. Our house search took us down little alleyways and back streets but we then came upon an abandoned property in the old town, a bit of a diamond in the rough as many of these abandoned buildings In Algarve's largest port are.

We bought this particular property because it is situated on a double stand, corner plot, spanning three streets and there are very few in the old town that are like this. This means you have a lot more light inside the property and terraces are much bigger..

We love the location and position of the house, its proximity to cafes, shops and restaurants. Olhao has an abundance of inviting little restaurants, you can eat delicious fresh fish or petiscos- Portuguese tapas- for next to nothing and the wine is cheaper than a glass of coke!.

Olhao is an incredibly lively place filled with the noisy atmosphere of daily fish markets. Both fruit and fish markets are world renowned and commented upon in all the guide books. We don't think you will see so many different species of fish anywhere else. On Saturdays, the market is even livelier and bursting with activity.

In addition, within ten minutes we can be on the ferry to our property on the island of Armona. If you would like to split your stay between the two properties we would be happy to try to accommodate you. (Jabulani, Armona Island).

What makes this apartment unique

The property is both airy and spacious with lovely views over the old town from both terraces. It is not necessary to have a car as it is right in the town.

It is a way of life for the Olhanense to drink coffee with friends and eat out with the whole family and the number of cafes and restaurants in the town is incredible and part of the fun is to discover new places to eat and drink. Prices are much lower than in the more commercial holiday areas along the coast and the welcome genuine. Most of all Olhao is a laid-back town where you can relax, take your time, chat to the some of the local characters, and really chill out and enjoy what the town has to offer. In the summer season, the town comes alive at night particularly during the August week long seafood festival with stalls and street entertainment.

In summary, Olhao is a hidden gem, not for everyone, thankfully, only for those looking for some authenticity and ruggedness. Nothing is polished here, which we think is its great attraction, ...the beauty of the decay, stunning old buildings on the verge of collapse hiding gorgeous old tiles and doors (although these are being quickly snapped up) and all of this combined with buildings that have already been restored. The Moorish influences are very visible and the city reminds one of Morocco a bit. The town is unique in that it has been able to maintain the balanced between locals and tourists, thus preserving its authenticity.

The nearby island beaches are some of the finest in Europe where white sandy beaches contrast beautifully with the azure sea, its much like on a tropical island and the ferry ride is all part of a great day out. We love it, we hope you do too!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are reluctant to write a positive review of our stay in Olhao and Armona as it could encourage too many others to head out there and enjoy the ‘real’ Portugal we discovered on our ten day trip at the end of April - all without the hassle of hiring a car! The holiday started by being met at Faro airport by a friendly taxi-driver who took us straight to the apartment, twenty miles away. Our hostess Lucie met us at the door of and showed us round the roomy apartment, tucked away in the old town, an oasis of calm and comfort from which to explore the fish restaurants, fabulous market and general atmosphere of this delightful fishing port. During the day we soaked up the sun on the roof terrace when it was shining, enjoying the buzz of street life below. At night we slept soundly in the comfortable bed. After four days of Portuguese urban life and plenty of simple fresh fish we were relaxed and ready for the beach retreat.

A ten minute walk to the jetty and twenty minute ferry trip later we were heading up the main footpath through Armona towards Jabulani, Lucie’s beach-house. This delightful sand-dune island, part of a large nature reserve, is composed of several huge sandy beaches and a clutch of beach houses, once fishermen’s cottages. Being car-free meant real peace so much of the time was spent lounging in one of the small cafe / restaurants and walking on the beaches. Like Lucie's town-house, Jabulani was roomy and kitted out with everything needed for a relaxing holiday - including an inflatable canoe we used for a couple of evening paddles. From the roof platform we could look over rooftops towards the small estuary ten metres away and watch the sea-birds and the ebb and flow of the tide.

A half-day boat trip round the islands with a group of strangers (who quickly became friends), was a fitting end to this thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing holiday. The few days in the town's bustle providing a great contrast to the laid-back and car-free beach retreat. We are coming back!

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: This large spacious apartment is situated in the old Moorish town of Olhao and accessed via Rua dos Cordoeiros, parallel to Rua Luis da Camoes . It is fitted with contemporary furniture and all the latest modern conveniences. Wrought iron beds, granite worktops and granite dining table. Italian tiled bathrooms, leather sofa and rattan cane chairs in living area. The apartment has hand carved wooden windows, which are double-glazed with shutters. You may well find cheaper accommodation in other parts of Olhao but much of this consists of small apartments away from the charm of the old town, balconies with no decent outside space. As guests have indicated, if you want top quality accomodation, cheap fish restaurants, bustling fishing boats and tidal estuaries, beaches to die for, a boat trip to the islands and amazing wildlife nearby, this one is for you. No pets or smoking permitted in the apartment. An information folder to help you enjoy your stay will be in the apartment. Outside: The apartment boasts two very large outside terraces, the first one adjoins the living room with a brick built bar-b-que, the second is the very large roof terrace with recliners, table and chairs. The patio doors in living area are made to fold back completely as shown in photographs. You can sit on either terrace with a glass of Portuguese wine and watch the world go by. From the lower terrace, you can walk up to the upper roof terrace which has a charming view across the rooftops towards the sea -visible on the horizon. The roof terrace has drying facilities and separate seating and recliners. Up here you get sunshine all day long! It is a quiet, peaceful and private spot, ideal for sunbathing or an afternoon nap! Utility Room: Utility cupboard with vacuum cleaner, ironing board, iron, laundry basket/pegs, cleaning equipment, beach umbrella, shopping trolley. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen and towels (including beach towels) are provided. We ask tenants to leave the property in the condition in which they found it. A light clean is provided at end of stay

Fabulous base in the Eastern Algarve

  • 5 of 5

Lucie organised a taxi and in 15 minutes we were there! Very well appointed apartment. Lucie has a great attention to detail in furnishing. Kitchen has everything and more for meal preparation. The basics of seasoning, oil and vinegar are for use with a general guidance to replace as necessary. The terrace gets the sun all day but also has a large sun umbrella for shade. Great built in bbq with plenty of tools. The roof terrace has loungers, table, chairs and a wonderful sun canopy. Clothes drier folds down and there are plenty of pegs.

Very balanced town with plenty of good bars and restaurants. The fish and vegetable markets are 5 minutes walk away and Pingo Douce is the best of many local supermarkets.

The train station is a short walk away and there are regular and inexpensive trains along the coast offering countless interesting day trips. We enjoyed the beach at Fuseta, Tavira and Vila Real.

We love the Ria Fermosa Nature Reserve followed by a meal at the restaurant on the corner. We used the circular local bus to the campsite followed by a very short walk.

Visiting the islands are a must. Armona is the closest by ferry, and a short walk passing quaint cottages takes you an amazing beach. Culatra and Farol are also worth a visit. They all have good cafes and restaurants or nice to take a picnic.

Superb hospitality and would love to return.

Owner's Response: Delighted that you found everything you needed in the apartment and the location was perfect for your daily trips; you certainly took full advantage of what one can do when one is based in Olhao from walking in the nature reserve to trips to the islands, enjoying the many cafes and local restaurants although will put you down as one of the more adventurous! We are fortunate that the apartment borders three streets and is on a corner so there is sunlight pretty much all day if that is what one wants but equally there is the canopy to avoid direct sunlight. I thoroughly enjoyed hosting you and loook forward to doing so again at some future date.

Great apartment and very well located

  • 5 of 5

It was our first stay in Portugal and we want to thank Lucie for her availibility and all the advices they gave us before departure. She arranged the taxi to pick us up at Faro airport and he also drove us back to the airport.

We were 2 adults and 1 child of 12 years old and the apartment was perfect.

The apartment is very well furnished with all appliances needed for a great comfort. Wifi is working fine which was important for us.

The 2 terraces are incredible and the roof top is excellent for sun bathing and also for drying clothes. It also has an incredible view over Olhao.

The apartment is very well located in the center of Olhao, we had no car and could walk everywhere (to the market, to take the ferry to the islands, to the train station, to the mall, etc...).

We felt very secure in the apartment and could experience portugese way of life as in the middle of the city.

Lucie was also very quick to refund our deposit after departure.

I would recommend Lucie's apartment to anyone who would like to have a nice stay in a small town in Algarve, with all the comfort.

Owner's Response: Thank you Caroline & family for your comments; we are delighted you enjoyed your stay, found the place comfortable with all that you needed to make your stay even more enjoyable. I know you had a few questions before you travelled, that's perfectly understandable given it was your first time in Portugal and indeed Olhao, a typically Portuguese town which has retained much of its original character! It's the simplicity of the town and the fact that a car is really not necessary as everything is within a 5-10 minute walk at most which attracts many to the place. I was very happy that I could answer your questions and hope we will see you again perhaps in our Armona cottage at some point. Thank you very much for treating the place as if it was your own and leaving it clean and tidy, always much appreciated.

Whats not to like!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed many times in Olhao but this appartment was by far the best accommodation we have had. The apartment is very light, bright and roomy. Everything from furniture to pots and pan to bed linen was really good quality, it was very well equipped with everything we needed and more. Nice little touches made all the difference. Loads of outside space a lovely terrace with table, chairs and barbecue and a lovely large roof terrace with great views equipped with table, chairs and sunbeds. We enjoyed a few sundowners on the roof watching the storks fly past! Can't wait to return.

Owner's Response: Thank you Lindsey for a very complimentary review. Your comments are particularly noteworthy in light of your knowledge of other local accommodation in the town itself. We are delighted you found everything you needed to be comfortable plus the little extras which all helps in terms of being able to enjoy one's stay fully. WE look forward to hosting you again at some point in the future. Best wishes Lucie & Nicholas

The facilities and quality were first class

  • 4 of 5

There is not much to say about an almost perfect property. The only caveat is that the insulation qualities left a lot to be desired. Unfortunately we hit a mixed weather and were very cold in the living area as all the heat generated seemed to be lost as it was produced. Some curtaining in the living area would probably have helped. The situation was perfect for accessing all the facilities including transport.

Owner's Response: Thank you Ronald, you are the first person to have flagged this up but I know you were concerned about feeling the cold even before you went, perhaps you do more than others. You mention curtains but many others love the views offered by the bi-fold doors when open and the design of the unit doesn't really lend itself to curtains; we prefer shutters. We will explore other options when we return and advise guests that it can be cold at night. I am pleased you found the apartment and location perfect for your day trips out. Thank you for leaving it clean and tidy, always much appreciated. Best wishes, Lucie

Coast/Beach:

Olhao has a new harbour with cobbled walkways taking you along its picturesque waterfront. The fishing port and boating marina is less than ten minutes walk. In addition, you can take a short ferry ride or a water taxi to the beautiful unspoilt beaches on the islands of Armona, Culatra and Farol. The ferry leaves hourly in the high season from the port which is a 5 min walk from the house. There are no cars on the islands and both the lagoon and Atlantic side are easily accessible on foot.

Travel:

Faro airport is twenty minutes away. If you do not hire a car, we can arrange transport directly to the apartment. Olhao train and bus station are both a short walk from the house. Everything you need including English papers is within 10 mins walk and we would argue that a car is not necessary. You may consider taking the train or coach to Lisbon and spending a day or two in the historic Portuguese capital, alternatively use Olhao as a base to visit Tavira by train or indeed Seville by coach.

Distances:

The apartment is perfectly located with everything you need for a great holiday on your doorstep. Trains from Olhao or taxis can take you to Faro where its old cobbled walkways have some good shops and the walled old town is well worth a visit. 5-10 minutes walk away are the famous fish and fresh fruit markets and within a three minute walk you can access many bars, restaurants, cafes and shops. Tavira is also a delightful town to visit, easily accessible by train.

Further Details:

Olhao pronounced ”oll-yow” is famous for its cobbled walkways, as well as its daily fish and fresh fruit market and dozens of shops. The first sardine & canning factories in Olhao were opened back in 1882. When the traditional trade of fishing died off in favour of tourism in most other parts of the Algarve, Olhao remained a lively place filled with the noisy atmosphere of daily fish markets & the calls of fishermen as boats come in with their catches. Regarded as a rare gem (Guardian newspaper May 2009) it’s centre is crumbling, charming and faded, and stuffed full of appealingly batty characters, drawn by the abandoned, gloriously tile fronted, 19th century townhouses. Along with the traditional cube buildings from its heyday as the major fishing port, the town has some lovely old cobbled streets and easy access to the nearby islands.

The house is named after Luis Vaz de Camoes c. 1524 - 1580. He is considered the Portuguese language's greatest poet. His mastery of verse has been compared to that of Shakespeare, Vondel, Homer, Virgil, and Dante. He wrote a considerable amount of lyrical poetry and drama but is best remembered for his epic work Os Lusiadas (The Lusiads).

On Olhao's doorstep is the Ria Formosa nature reserve, a beautiful labyrinth of lagoons separated from the sea by a coastal dune system which is broken up by various natural inlets. It is one of the most important nature reserves in the network of wetlands that links Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, consists of more than 17000 hectares of unspoilt lagoon, home to hundreds of different breeding birds and a bird watchers paradise.

The Ria Formosa organisation is responsible for preserving this cultural heritage and has recovered the tide mill at Marim, (near Olhao) preserved a traditional tuna fishing boat and some Roman salt pans, and has a project for breeding the rare and extraordinary native water dogs which have webbed feet and were used by fishermen to herd fish into nets.
