Coachman's Cottage is situated in the beautiful established grounds of an Edwardian country house, surrounded by countryside. Guests are encouraged to use the new hot tub and the tennis court and gardens. The cottage is well furnished and can sleep up to 7 people very comfortably. Converted in 1995 from a bothy, it includes a country kitchen with Rayburn, cosy sitting room with open fire for winter evenings. This leads into a large conservatory, for sitting or dining. Outside there are tables and chairs for al fresco eating and fresh vegetables are available in season. Dogs are allowed upon request. There are limited facilities for disabled.

About the Owner

My husband and I have travelled widely, and lived in Kenya, for many years. We settled in Derbyshire in 1983. My husband owns his own accountancy practice in the local town, and I have recently got a degree in Fine Art. I am now a practising artist.

We enjoy country pursuits, the garden, tennis and travelling.

We also have a holiday home on the coast in Kenya, where we go as often as we can in the winter.

My husband came to work in this area. We love the countryside around here, all the hills and the villages. I also enjoyed eventing my horse for many years, and was able to keep horses. I have a great interest in art, and spend a lot of my time painting. We have also worked very hard to create an interesting garden, which guests are very welcome to enjoy.

Activity and Interests

Travel:

The nearest airport is East Midlands 40 minutes. Birmingham 1 hour and Manchester 1/2 hours. Use of a car is recommended

Distances:

Ashbourne, the nearest market town is 2 miles away and from there north lies the Peak District. Alton Towers is 15 miles from the cottage and Chatsworth 30 miles. Derby is 10 miles and Nottingham 25 miles.

Further Details:

Ashbourne boasts many small specialist shops and includes a Waitrose, M & S Simply Food and Sainsburys. There are a variety of restaurants including the Dining Room. Many good pubs in the area, namely the Saracen's Head in Shirley, The George at Alstonefield and the Shire Horse at Wyaston.

Many country houses are located within an easy drive: Ashby Castle, Bolsover Castle, Calke Abbey, Catton Hall, Chatsworth, Elvaston Castle, Haddon and Hardwick Halls, Kedleston, Sudbury and Tissington.

Three theme parks, Alton Towers, Splash Landings and Gullivers Kingdom. Many family days out: Blackbrook Zoological Park, Go Ape, Rosliston Forestry Centre, Buxton Opera House, Chatsworth Garden and Farmyard and Adventure Playground, Conkers, Swadlincote Ski and Snowboard Centre, Uttoxeter Racecourse, Crich Tramway Village, The Heights of Abraham, Churnet Valley Railway and Steeple Grange Light Railway.

Shopping towns include: Ashbourne, Bakewell, Buxton, Chesterfield, Castleton, Wirksworth, Matlock and Matlock Bath. Derbyshire is famous for its diverse and beautiful scenery. The soft rolling landscape of the Derbyshire Dales, including Dovedale and the Manifold Valley, or the more rugged terrain of the High Peak, which encompasses Snake Pall, Edale, Mam Tor. Many areas are wonderful for walks and cycles can be hired. Carsington Water, 20 minutes away has water sports, playground and walking and cycling paths.

I am very happy to accommodate dogs on request, as there are lovely walks nearby. There is a newly installed hot tub with 32 jets, and a hard 'en tout case' tennis court. The property is very convenient for many attractions such as Alton Towers, and the Derbyshire stately homes. The Peak District is on our doorstep with all that it has to offer. We are also very near to Carsington Reservoir for water sports and walking and cycling. The cottage itself is unique in that it is situated in the grounds of an Edwardian country house and benefits from a well established and lovely garden. There is also a tennis court, croquet and climbing frame and swing for children. Convenient for Ashbourne, Buxton and Bakewell, and 3 airports not far away, East Midlands, Birmingham and Manchester

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The cottage sleeps 2 in a twin-bedded room on the ground floor, with cloakroom opposite. Upstairs is a large double bedded room with bathroom next door and a further twin-bedded room with en-suite shower. The cottage has a lovely country kitchen with table seating four, and a utility room leading off it. There is a comfortable sitting room with open fire and logs and coal are provided. This leads into a large conservatory with comfortable chairs and a dining table that sits eight people. Outside: The cottage is situated in the grounds of an Edwardian house, surrounded by countryside. The gardens cover 3 acres in area and include woodland, shrubberies and herbaceous, as well as a raised bed vegetable garden. The conservatory opens out onto a patio with picnic table and barbecue. There is further outdoor furniture available. Racquets and balls are provided for tennis. There is a very popular tree swing, and climbing frame for children. Utility Room: Includes large fridge/freezer, microwave and washing machine. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels are included. The property is cleaned every week, linen and towels changed weekly. Other: Large conservatory with dining table and chairs, as well as comfortable easy chairs.
