About the property

A beautiful & tranquil hilltop location with panoramic views, your gite and the HEATED POOL are situated on 5 acres of gardens overlooking woodland, valleys and fields: a tranquil, rural setting for your holiday.

The gite Le Chevalier is a simple traditional stone cottage which has been renovated to provide an ideal holiday let for couples or a small family. It has it's own garden, trees for shade and outdoor furniture for enjoying the sun by-day and al fresco dining in the evenings, all with beautiful views. Every type of holiday is catered for:-

* Quiet holidays in a beautiful countryside setting beside the heated pool.

* Lots to interest the children; our horses and pets, and river-based activities close by on the River Dronne

* Cycling or walking on the huge network of waymarked tracks and quiet country lanes that surround us.

*Great restaurants and, though we are biased, the most beautiful villages in the northern Dordogne.

If you, or your children, are horse mad then our two beautiful horses are around for you to watch being schooled, groom and, if you wish, help with their everyday care. We are members of several clubs and compete in several disciplines so we can arrange excellent riding for all levels.

For 2017 we are offering cycling support, both for those who wish to bring their bikes or we arrange all the equipment for you - tested routes with maps and guides are provided. We are avid cyclists and these routes will enable you to make the most of your stay here and see the very best the area has to offer.

We have been letting now for 13 years giving us a great understanding of how to help you make the most of your stay in the area from the moment you arrive. As well as the activities away from your gite which include the myriad castles, historic and prehistoric sites and great restaurants, we have horses here plus our miniature pot-bellied pigs, George and Georgina. Children love these and we enable them to participate in their care as well as feeding them.

Our location is the thing everyone comments upon - traditional stone cottage, perfect for your self catering needs with enclosed garden - lovely and cool in the summer. Being on the top of a hill the views are fantastic and there is no intrusion from road traffic by day, nor light pollution by night. However much we describe it, once here, our guests are always amazed at the tranquility and the clarity of the night sky.

Villages with all amenities are just 5 minutes by car whilst the River Dronne is just 3km away (less on foot or cycle) for canoeing and river beaches.

Some more specific details on what we have to offer:-

CYCLING: We are very keen cyclists and this area is excellent for on and off road holidays with a huge network of traffic free lanes and cycle/bridleways; the latter mapped and signposted. Introduced in 2016, we can organise your cycling at any level you wish: full self-guided touring with bikes, gear and routes provided, or bring your own and bikes and take up our self-guided routes. These are tried and tested circuits by us to ensure you see the best of the area. Includes maps and guide to get you round problem-free.

HORSE RIDING: Schooling and training of our own horses here is always an interest to those who are horse riders. We can arrange horse riding, depending on your level, at one of several centres - everything from introductions to riding to hacks in the forests.

WALKING: There are 200km of waymarked walks in our canton alone! Many times that within a short drive from us. We provide you with all the maps to enjoy these; everything from a 5km stroll (there is a choice of three right from your doorstep), to a whole day circular routes.

The gite is a beautifully modernized cottage, equipped with the essentials you expect and need to enjoy your holiday cottage, including Wi-Fi and UK Freesat TV.

We hope you choose to holiday with us in 2017.

About Mike and Gail Smith

Gail and Mike have been at Meytreillac letting our gites for 13 seasons. We moved here from the UK in 2004 for the quality of life and the ability to pursue our passion for the outdoors; in particular cycling and riding horses. We have a lovely equestrian set-up here to ride and train our two stunning geldings and beautiful mare - 'Pamplemouse' (Mr P) is Gail's 17hh Selle Francais showjumper he is 11 yo and Gail's jumping horse and her dressage project,. 'Tommy' is Mike's 9 yo 16.3 Irish Draft who is devoted to Mike and is, shall we say, "a bit of a character". 'Tequilla' is a beautiful roane PRExcob. Whether schooling, hacking, rallies or competition, they are the focus of our lives here in France.

Our other passion is cycling. With so many cycle opportunities, on and off road, this is a fantastic area to cycle, but we also take our holidays in other parts of France; taking our tandem to discover France by bike.

Mike and Gail Smith purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Mike and Gail Smith chose Perigord Vert

We have travelled France for 20 years and chose to live in this area of the Dordogne because, quite simply, we consider it the best mix of everything that's good about France. The area has stunning beauty defined by valleys and hills, rivers and woodland. It's rural nature is tempered by the myriad villages that provide interest for us and vacation guests alike. Unlike the south of the department, it is never heaving with visitors yet it has just about everything to offer as the area is also built around its river, the River Dronne and beautiful riverside towns and hamlets.

There is nowhere in France with all this and providing the very best in rural access for outdoor interests like walking, horse riding and cycling. It is, as we well know, imperious for horse riding and blessed with myriad small lanes and bridleways for cycling. It just does not get any better!

What makes this cottage unique

Rural tranquility can often come with the disadvantages of isolation from towns. Our property benefits from the tranquility of no traffic and surrounded by just fields and farmhouses dotted as they are across the hills and valley. However, our own village is just 3km from us and we have 3 other villages within 5km providing everything you need for your self-catering holiday; including banks, supermarkets, pharmacies and an english GP!

Our guests come back again and again; we may not be unique, but we know of no other holiday gites where you can have the true tranquility day and night that our rural position offers, along with the luxuries like heated pool, direct access to marked trails and all holiday activities within a short drive.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wow it was hot! We were so glad we were in a centuries-old stone cottage arriving as we did in the midst of a heatwave. Despite being 42 degrees on one occasion our gite stayed wonderfully cool day and night. Mike was so attentive to our needs and gave up one of their house fans. A really fantastic place with some excellent places to eat and visit. Thank you Gail and Mike

Lovely location, a bit too rustic

  • 3 of 5

Firstly, I must say that Mike and Gail were very friendly and the views are splendid, although I would suggest that the point made that both gites have beautiful views may be stretching it - our view was of a pile of loose chippings and a horse box... The location is fantastic, surrounded by beautiful villages and sites, all within a short drive. I would prefer that the information folder was rather more up-to-date, and the request that we do our own cleaning on departure in order to get our deposit back (which had to be paid in cash on arrival, and repaid to our bank account later?) had been made clearer. How much cleaning? Putting away the washing up and stripping the beds, or cleaning the shower and loo?

Please let me stress we had a lovely week and the pool was fantastic, and the kids enjoyed seeing the horses and meeting the pigs, but there were a couple of situations which were not ideal. One was the leaking shower, which caused my daughter to have a painful tumble on the beautiful, but old and uneven stairs. Mike fixed it the next day, but he already knew about it, so it shouldn't have happened. And a 48 hour power cut - obviously not anyone's fault, but we felt the duty of care was not fulfilled. Our gite had no natural light in the bathroom or kitchen, so giving us 5 tealights on the first night with no power really wasn't enough. No extra candles etc on the second night and only on the third day did they offer to run a cable to our kitchen from their generator so we could try and save the food in our fridge, empty our sink (which had an electric pump) or put a light on.

Perhaps my fault I'm rather non-confrontational and didn't make my feelings known at the time, but I would have expected a little more concern regarding these things.

Obviously these things were one offs, and I don't doubt anyone booking would have a lovely week, and on a personal level, I found our hosts to be charming, but I think they need to up their game just a little in order to make it fabulous.

Owner's Response: We're glad you had a lovely week A point I'll oft reprise The pool was warm, it's views sublime The ambience serene You liked the gite, though rustic, true 'Twas built before the time When Windows came from B&Q And glass cost just a dime Built in times of Tudor kings These buildings tell their stories In every crack and hand-carved stone In spaces small and cozy Cool by day yet warm by night Oft lost in renovations which Steal their sole, integrity Masking their intentions We're glad you had a lovely week Despite the perturbation The lightening strike and power cut Stoicism, patience An act of God, not best resolved By candles in the loo A problem that would not respond To paper, string and glue Hogwarts wouldn't take me in I went to Comprehensive No magic wand was gifted me No spells or magic potions I did though learn to improvise That's how I cadged a 'genny' Some cable ties and lengths of string So you could spend a penny We're glad you had a lovely week Despite the leak that dripped A fault I'd fixed two weeks before But still your daughter slipped I can't replace a whole bathroom When gites are fully booked But come again and you will see It's not been overlooked. A pristine shower cubicle To replace the one that's broken Will adorn that leaky 'coin de douche' In May when we re-open We're glad you had a lovely week (Good news is worth reprise) We do hope you return one day Bright sky's and warming breeze I remember an old adage If true it, would be nice That hosts like us are rare as pearls And lightning don't strike twice! LOL!

Wonderful, tranquil traditional countryside holiday, highly recommended!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Mike and Gails gite was absolutely wonderful...The Gite was well equipped and we all felt very at home in such an old building which always remained cool even in the blistering heat of the day. The views across the countryside from the pool are stunning. If you like chill and tranquility and want nothing more than a short walk to the pool across a beautifully mown lawn then this could be for you. Add in a bit of cycling this becomes the perfect location for a relaxing holiday in the Dordogne. The gites location also benefits from being very close to some wonderful historic attractions should you wish to venture further afield.

I have wistful memories of hearing the Swifts coming and going whilst we stayed there. Highly recommended!

Fantastic and interesting character filled spot. Lots of animals, cats horses and even pigs! Great for kids.

Generous and easy going hosts full of great tips.

Crown jewel is the pool set at the top of the property with a nice view down the hill.

Even English TV if you need your fix of East Enders.

Perfect for a relaxing, comfortable holiday

  • 5 of 5

The setting is idyllic, the accommodation is immaculate and comfortable and the welcome from the hosts, Gail and Mike, is friendly but unobtrusive.

Just a short drive from excellent restaurants, supermarkets and other facilities yet still a quiet and peaceful retreat.

This was my second visit, and I am returning yet again next year. And probably the year after that......

What a great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Stayed pre season, before the hot weather arrived. To early to use the pool but the cottage was very comfortable and the hosts are very welcoming. A lovely location, specially if you like nature as I heard the nightingale. Hurray, will be back next year!

Great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous first holiday with our 8 week old baby. Our friends booked the other Gite with their 3 year old boy. We all flew into Bordeaux and we were a bit apprehensive about the journey but it wasn’t a long flight and a straight forward drive to Mike and Gail’s. The Gite has a beautiful secluded gated garden ideal for stays with children. It is well equipped and in a great location for a quiet break in the French countryside. The heated pool was a particular highlight as the weather was glorious and the pool warm enough for our baby to have his first swim. It is impossible to describe how quite it is, we felt so relaxed from the moment we arrived. There are lots of lovely walks from the doorstep which helped us get the baby off to sleep. We hired a car to see the local area and enjoyed wandering around the beautiful local towns of Bourdeilles and Brantome. We also visited Lac Jemaye twice as it was so beautiful, quite and had great facilities. Thanks to Mike and Gail for being such helpful and friendly hosts. We will back. We loved the pigs too!
