Overview

Property

Updated: 14-Nov-2016
Country House in Mayreville, between Mirepoix and Castelnaudary, Aude - Architect Designed Rural Refuge For Summer Leisure And Winter Skiing

Once a hilltop hamlet, the surviving farmhouse has recently been rebuilt and sleeps 7 comfortably in 3 double bedrooms with two bathrooms. Located in rolling countryside with panoramic views of the Pyrenees. The timber and stone construction has an open plan ground floor with a large kitchen/dining area in a tall timbered lean-to barn. The terraced, heated pool and dining terrace provide the perfect setting for R&R. Situated between the medieval town of Mirepoix and the Canal du Midi basin in Castelnaudary, the area offers cultural and leisure activities: cycling down the shaded Canal du Midi towpaths; following the Cathar trail, visiting the citadels of Peyrepertuse, Queribus and the chateau at Carcassonne; sailing and windsurfing at Lac de la Ganguise - and the Mediterranean is 75 minutes away; the vineyards of the Malepere, Minervois and Corbiere; walking and riding in the Montagne Noire.

About the Owner

Having spent frequent holidays in the Languedoc Roussillion over a period of 20 years, we finally bought our own "hameau" in 2003. With the help of a french architect friend and my English architect husband we have created a wonderful second home - a complete contrast to a hectic London life.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Being a ‘veteran’ of holidaying in France, I think I should be a bit of an expert. But what you have both created there is a gem, one that many of us aspire to. The countryside is both beautiful and unspoilt dotted with many historic towns and villages that make it a great region to explore. Add to this the (for France) highly affordable quality wines and food and you have a winning formula. I am as you know a winter sports fan, so the nearness of the Pyrenees is also a fantastic feature, but in the Summer as well as in winter. Looking forward to the next visit."

“We had a wonderfully peaceful and relaxing time at Gentesta. The house was incredibly spacious and very comfortable. The views to the Pyrenees were awesome. Highly recommended”.

"We had a wonderful time at Gentesta, you have chosen a wonderful spot and created a beautiful holiday home."

Great house and location

  • 5 of 5

Spacious house and grounds renovated to high standard. Fabulous views and sunsets. Lovely pool. Peaceful. Everything well organised. Short drive to either Salles sur l'Hers or Belpech for bread, butcher & mini mart. Butcher in Belpech is brilliant. Mirepoix is lovely, loads of restaurants. Highly recommended.

peaceful country house

  • 5 of 5

I was very impressed with the property. It is very spacious with a huge kitchen and even a log fire.We didn't use the swimming pool as it was March but managed a day's skiing,a trip to Carcassonne and a vineyard visit to stock up on the excellent local wine.

We were very comfortable and the setting was so peaceful.

My trip to Castelnaudary

  • 5 of 5

I went to Castelnaudry earlier this year with friends and to have a day's skiing. I have been there a number of times before and love it. The house itself is presented quite beautifully and is on such a wonderful scale - the size of the rooms and the height of the ceilings - and so creates quite an impression. There is everything you could want in the house as well in terms of facilities with British TV for those of us who might want to simply lounge on the sofa for an evening or two.

The views and surrounding countryside are terrific and it is so very easy to find somewhere wonderful to eat locally - with Mirepoix and Carcassonne only a relatively short drive away. I can't recommend it highly enough as it is a great place to stay if you want both a summer holiday or some time spent in the mountains.

Location

From the Owner

Once we made the decision to buy in the area, the main criteria were to find somewhere with views of the Pyrenees (and we have those in spades at Gentesta!) and a swimming pool. A tennis court would be ideal, but...We love the convenience of Gentesta and often stay just for a weekend. With the mountains close by, my husband is able to spend the day skiing, invariably stopping off at the local Sports Bar to watch a 6 nations rugby match, whilst I enjoy a long lunch with friends! We have found the people here extremely friendly and, over the years, have made a lot of french friends. Our neighbours in the farm behind Gentesta are delightful and we always enjoy the summer fetes and other celebrations in Mayreville. We are sure that you will too!
