Railway Cottage in Whitby with Stunning Views

Overview

Property

Updated: 08-Nov-2016
Railway Cottage in Whitby, North Yorkshire

Platform 12 is a two bedroom railway cottage centrally located in the historic and picturesque town of Whitby. Decorated to an extremely high standard, the cottage is well equipped and should provide everything needed for an enjoyable stay. Set in an enviable location, the cottage overlooks the North Yorkshire Moors heritage railway line, where steam trains can be seen chugging into Whitby station. The living accommodation is located upstairs to take full advantage of the fantastic views of the harbour and abbey. The cottage has a range of amenities close by, including a supermarket, shops, pubs restaurants, and of course, Whitby’s famous fish and chip shops! A fabulous location for your holiday in Whitby.

About the Owner

Platform 12 is a holiday home of Diane & Stewart Turner. Stewart works for himself as a surveyor and Diane runs her own Home Boarding for Dogs business called 'Digz'4'Dogz'. We both work from home in Wakefield and our business is mainly in Yorkshire. We spend as much time as possible in Whitby, but it would be a shame for someone not to benefit from this lovely cottage when we are not there.

Lovely cottage in a lovely place right next to the railway. Parking space a real advantage. Weather was lovely too! Able to sit on the patio and watch the steam train going past. Would definitely return. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Pristine Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is an ideal place to stay! The location is superb and the cottage was as clean as a new pin. Everything was just as had been described. Facilities first class and nothing was overlooked to make our stay a great experience. It was a real home from home. Great places to eat within walking distance and the biggest Co-op I have ever seen just down the road. Diane is very accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. No hesitation in recommending this beautiful property. The only downside was the weather...which my four year old didn't appreciate.....but get booking so you don't miss out on a wonderful cottage

Railway cottage

  • 3 of 5

Very nice terraced cottage and centrally located, ideal for exploring Whitby and some nice walks to Ruswarp and beyond in the other direction. Perfect for 2 people or a family with young children, not suitable for 4 adults as the second bedroom is tiny with 2 single beds and a tiny wardrobe squeezed in, the description said 2 bathrooms leading you to think perfect for 2 couples only to find it's actually one bathroom downstairs and a toilet room upstairs.

That said it was very clean and modern loved the outside patio for afternoon drinkies and watching the steam trains go by. Finally a big plus point is the outside parking space which for regular visitor's to Whitby like us it's a godsend.

Owner's Response: Appreciate the feedback especially regarding the Owners Direct Site stating that the cottage has two bathrooms when there is one family bathroom on the ground floor and a wc by the first floor entrance, upon reading the review this was immediately corrected. This row of cottages have properties advertised to sleep six with four star Tourist Bard Ratings ratings so I was surprised to read that our guest thought the cottage wasn't suitable for four adults. The second bedroom bedroom is small but since launching this property as an holiday-let dozens of adult couples have slept there including ourselves without a problem. To ensure our clients comfort and a good nights sleep the twin beds in this bedroom are adult size, electrically operated with tempur mattresses.

Nice cottage but could do better.

  • 3 of 5

Nice cottage in a good location, but somewhat functional. Spacious enough for two people but it would be somewhat cramped for four as the second bedroom is very small and not really a double although it has two single beds.

Surprisingly there is only one bedside table and lamp in the main bedroom which was very inconvenient, so we had to move the one in from the other room. Unfortunately the bulb in the lamp was dead and there were no spare ones in the cottage, which was annoying. There really should have been some spare bulbs left, you do not expect to have to go out and buy one if you need a working lamp.

There were quite a few comments from past visitors who had commented about the lack of a toilet roll holder in the bathroom, hooks behind doors and spare bin liners, bulbs etc. Unfortunately these comments have been ignored by the owner which is a pity, as it gives the impression that they can't be bothered. It would cost very little to add all of these things, and also a second bedside table and lamp in the main bedroom, which really should be as standard. There was also no hairdryer provided and you need to take your own towels, or buy them if you haven't noticed it in the info. All in all there were quite a few little niggles, even the salt and pepper was actually salt and salt, and the owner should really take a bit of time to sort these things out.

Whitby is great and we hope to return again, but it would not be to this cottage.

Owner's Response: I am very surprised and disappointed to read this review especially as Diane and I take great care on the upkeep of the cottage and comfort of our guests. I am pleased for the opportunity to address this particular guests comments. With regard to ignoring comments from previous visitors this is simply not the case, we have a comments book in the cottage so that feedback can be taken on-board. I've tried three different self-adhesive wall mounted toilet roll holders in the last twelve month, unfortunately I can't find one that sticks. The bathroom walls are tiled and wont risk damaging the wall, so I purchased a toilet brush that doubles as a toilet roll holder for the main bathroom. A previous visitor wrote that the bathroom would benefit from a bath robe holder behind the door which was acted on straight away, unfortunately there are no hooks behind other doors. It has been mentioned that the bedroom would benefit from two bedside cabinets, we visited Beavers in Whitby who supplied the suite but could not match it. We haven't asked our caretaker to check that guests have put salt in a pepper pot. All guests have our number and had we been contacted about the bulb one would have been provided within an hour. The property is an excellent four berth accommodation, cottages on the same row are advertised as six berth utilising bed settees and they have excellent reviews. Our client was informed in writing before their visit to take their own towels. All electrical items are checked annually by professionals, but we chose not to include an hair dryer for safety reasons. This guest had every opportunity to contact us during their stay, and I would recommend to other cottage owners not to take their reservation.

Location

From the Owner

We first visited Whitby around 7 years ago which is around the time we first met. Whitby has something for everybody and is still a quaint seaside town with great landmarks, beaches and outstanding contributions to history. It didn't take long for us to realise that it's a place where we would love to live. We purchased a property on Oswy Street, so named after King Oswy who founded the Abbey. Oswy Street is one of the original railway terraces built for the railway workers in the 1860's. You can imagine that on hearing new railway cottages were proposed built with many original features, and having fantastic views of the Marina, Steam Trains and the Abbey we couldn't resist buying no.12 Railway Cottages. We named the cottage 'Platform 12' because of its close proximity to the station.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

This cottage is in a perfect location for railway enthusiasts. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway line is the most popular heritage railway line in the country and it runs past the cottage - providing an up close view of the steam trains as they chug into Whitby station. The station itself is a few minutes walk away and provides access to the Whitby to Pickering line.

Steam engine enthusiasts can also take a trip round Whitby on 'Elizabeth' – the world’s only steam passenger bus in daily operation.

Coast/Beach:

The beach is approximately 15 minutes walk away.

Boat and fishing trips can be taken from Whitby harbour, which is a five minute walk away from the cottage.
