Idyllic 200 year old stone cottage, set in 2 acres of fully enclosed gardens of lawn and trees in peaceful valley on edge of forest of St. Sever with only horses, trees and birds as neighbours. Camellia cottage has been converted to high modern standards while retaining all original features of oak beams and stone walls inside and out with a huge traditional Norman stone fireplace. It provides 3 comfortable bedrooms and bathroom on first floor over a large open plan living/dining room and kitchen. Within easy reach of sandy beaches around Granville, the D-day landing beaches, Mont St. Michel and Bayeaux. Nearest towns of St. Sever, Villedieu les Poeles and Vire offer excellent shopping and swimming pools while the countryside around is ideal for walking, cycling and bird watching from the hide on the nearby lake. Ideal for nature lovers of all ages. You will want to return again and again to this haven of natural peace and comfort.

We bought the cottage 20 years ago as a ruin with a roof in a peaceful, magical setting , spent a few years renovating it part-time, living in a caravan, left it unfinished for a while and then properly converted it for letting 5 years ago. We live 20 minutes away.

Why susan whitby chose Le Gast

We fell in love with its location and initially camped in the garden in tents and caravan while tending the grounds and pointing the stone walls of the building. It is very quiet with no neighbours or traffic and feels like a real secret garden on the edge of a wood, surrounded by trees, fields with horses and birds singing.

What makes this cottage unique

This is a truly magical place - people arrive tired and tense from their work and pressures of city life and after a few hours you can see the stress leave them as they sink into the amazing natural peace and calm of the expansive garden, surrounded by simple nature with trees swishing in the breeze and birds chirping. The house itself is simple, comfortable and spacious, made of exposed stone and oak beams with a well appointed kitchen, large dining and sitting area and comfortable beds. Children love the space and naturalness of the garden with its swings and splash pool for hot summer days.

Notes on accommodation: The house has been stunningly renovated leaving the original trusses and stone walls and ancient fire place, with a new timber first floor level for the bedrooms and bathroom, retaining the original rustic character. All rooms have electric radiators but for any cool summer evenings the huge wood burner should be more than adequate. With its lovely enclosed and secluded gardens in beautiful countryside, it provides the idyllic escape from the city and busy life with its peacful seclusion and absence of neghbours or passing cars. In order to maintain the perfect condition of the newly converted house and well maintained garden, smoking and animals are not allowed. Outside: The house is surrounded by a gravel terrace area with swing seat and recliners, BBQ and dining table with 7 chairs for meals outside in the sunshine. This is surrounded on two sides by the beautifully maintained two acre garden of mown grass and trees, fully enclosed by fence and hedges with an old orchard, kick-about area with huge climbing frame/swings and slide for under 12's, a 10' diameter trampoline and small field. The lawn in front of the house has a garden table and benches for meals in the shade of the trees and an above-ground splash pool in the summer months. All this is surrounded by woods and horse pastures with a small trout stream on one side and a very quiet country lane down another which forms part of a rural walk/cycle/riding route and has hardly any car use. The setting of this lovely cottage is truly exceptional and crying out to be enjoyed and appreciated by children and adults alike. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Pillows, duvets and bed linen provided, towels by arrangement. Linen is renewed and the house cleaned between lets though cleaning materials and equipment are provided and guests are asked to leave the house clean and tidy when they leave.

Beautiful and peaceful

We had an amazing time at the cottage. Our two daughters aged 5 and 2 loved the amazing garden and the Sheep!!! It is in a secluded location which is perfect!! It is peaceful and quiet but still within easy reach of brilliant attractions. The zoo at Champrepus is highly recommended and Granville is a lovely town to visit with an excellent safe sandy beach for little ones!!! Also enjoyed visiting the lovely surrounding towns and loved wondering around the depot vents on the odd rainy afternoon!! We had lovely weather for the most part). All in all we had a superb time in a stunning location and cottage and cannot wait to visit again!! We were sad to leave and wished we could have stayed longer!! Thank you!

What an amazing property and gardens, perfect for a large family

We had a wonderful stay here. The property caters well for families. Everything you need is provided and is very clean and in working order. It has clearly been looked after and the owners have put a lot of effort and soul into converting this into a wonderful cottage. It feels like a home not just a cottage and we felt very comfortable and relaxed staying here. I would highly recommend staying here. The place is rural and very quiet which suited us. The children (12,9 & 4) were able to play in the garden and make as much noise as they wanted.

There are some lovely walks in the area with an abundance of nature being located near to the forest and lake (but NO critters!! - and we stayed in August).

The cottage is ideally located to explore all of Normandy with most places within an hour or so drive. We visited Mt St Michel, Carroles Plage (south of Granville), Bayeux, Arrowmanches. St Sever is nearest place to shop, 5 mins drive with a fantastic patisserie and carrefour while larger supermarkets are available in Vire and Villedieu around 15mins drive. There is more to explore than we had time so we would definitely return.

Fabulous cottage in a serene setting

Our family of 5 were amazed by the fabulous gardens upon our arrival. We then went inside to see the grand lounge and the lovely bedrooms. The house really is immaculate and the pictures don't do it justice. The town is a 5 min drive and has lovely fresh food along with a supermarket. We had great days out at the beach, the zoo and the crocodile park. However, our best time was spent in the garden finding frogs, looking at the animals, making fires and playing hide & seek. If you're looking for a relaxing break with a young family or group of friends then this is a lovely retreat.

Fabulous cottage for a relaxing family holiday

Our family of 4 (2 adults, a 4 year old and a 2 year old) enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing family holiday in this idyllic cottage and garden. In fact we had such a great time we've already booked again for next year!

The cottage has been beautifully restored. The downstairs open plan kitchen - dining - living area is great for family life, and the bedrooms are all very comfortable.

However the real jewel is the wonderful garden. There's so much room for the kids to run around in, lots of different areas to explore and play in, and a fun pool to cool off on hot days.

The cottage is in quite a rural location - there are no neighbours to worry about and you can't see any other buildings, so it's very peaceful... that is until the children take full advantage of being able to make as much noise as they like!

We highly recommend Camellia Cottage to anyone looking for a beautiful house, lots of space, and a relaxing rural location, while still not being too far from beaches or other sites.

The perfect family cottage

Camellia cottage is quite simply the best holiday home we have ever stayed at. The house has everything you could need, Susan and Jeremy were lovely and the garden had everything a 3 year old could wish for.

We enjoyed our stay so much that we have already booked again for this year.

Idyllic country house retreat

My family and I had a wonderful stay in this very well equipped cottage. The interiors are lovely and the kitchen has everything you could ask for. The garden is absolutely amazing, and was perfect for our one year old to explore and practice walking in. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The cottage is located on the edge of the forest of St.Sever with cycling, walking and birdwatching on your doorstep and nothing but fields with horses and sheep all around.


The coasts of the Cotentin peninsular offer wonderful beaches, particularly around Granville about 40 minutes to the West with lovely sandy beaches, beach activities, restaurants, a casino and day trips to the Channel Islands and nearby Isles de Chaussey. The D-day landing beaches are about 45 mins to the North and all around are charming little ports with delicious seafood restaurants.


Car use is essential for access to the house, shops and entertainment.

You can fly to Dinard airport by Ryan air and hire a car (1.5 hours) or take the ferry in your own car to Caen, Cherbourg or St. Malo (1.5 hours) or Le Havre (2.5 hours).

Paris is 2 hours from Vire by train, an excellent day trip.


1km from nearest village, Le Gast. 5kms (7 min) from St. Sever with bars, garages, banks, shops, market, outdoor summer swimming pool and good 8 to 8 supermarket also open on Sunday morning. 16km (20 min) from Vire (East) and Villedieu les Poelles (West) with tourist offices, shops, restaurants and swimming pools. 40km (30 min) from Granville with beaches, shops, restaurants and ferries to channel isles. 60km (1 hr) to Mont St. Michel (West) or Bayeaux (North) and D-day beaches.

Further Details:

We provide basic refreshments and utilities for your arrival but you can stock up on Sunday morning, when normally there are no shops other than boulangeries open, at the excellent Carrfour supermarket in nearby St Sever. The open air heated swimming pool in St. Sever, open in July and August, is very good with a large grass area and a shallow pool for children separate from the adult pool. There is also horse riding, sailing and golf at the Lac de la Dathee, on the way to Vire, bungey jumping half and hour to the North and canooing 20 mins away on the river Vire. We provide a list of personally recommended restaurants and leaflets on entertainments and activities in the wider area though tourist offices in Villedieu and Vire are very helpful.

Prices are for the property per week in pounds though Euros at the going rate also acceptable if possible through the web-site.
Reduced rate for two weeks or more or for couples outside school holidays.
Gas provided free but an additional charge will be made for electricity used over basic allowance of 100 kw.hrs.
An initial amount of fire wood is given and more can be provided at £8/load. Bed linen included and towels can be provided at extra cost. An extra charge of up to £25 will be made for cleaning if not left in the state you find it on arrival.

Changeover Day:
Saturdays are the changeover day though outside the school holidays other arrangements may be possible.
