South Allington House, in the hamlet of Chivelstone, is a Grade II Georgian manor house, set in four acres of beautiful grounds, between Start Point and Prawle Point, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. Nestled in a picturesque secluded valley minutes from the beach, the magnificent Georgian house offers bed and breakfast en-suite rooms, and self-catering barn conversions, within vast grounds. There is ample parking and guests are free to use the grounds, including croquet, tennis court and coarse fishing. Devon cream teas with homemade scones and jam are served on the lawn in the summer. Dogs are allowed by prior arangement at a charge of £ 25 per dog .

The barn has a fully fitted kitchen with pine kitchen table, dishwasher, microwave, fridge freezer, and electric oven. There is a separate laundry/cloakroom, and spacious lounge with patio doors to garden area.
Two ensuite bedrooms, one with a double bed and bunk beds, with an en-suite bathroom. The other, with a double bed and single bed, has an ensuite shower room. (A bed settee in the lounge can accommodate another two guests - please contact us for tariff for nine people.)
The rear garden contains garden furniture, a barbecue for those summer evenings and attractive views across the grounds of South Allington House.
The price is inclusive of central heating and electricity, and bed linen and towels are provided. A washing line is also provided. Weekly bookings run from Saturday to Saturday. Free wifi in Coach House.
About the Owner
Barbara and Edward Baker have owned South Allington House since 1983 and since then they have worked hard to created the gardens and self-catering properties.
Edward works on the farming side and Barbara runs the house and self-catering units. They are keen gardeners and do all the gardening themselves, with the help of family members. Visitors to the area enjoy wonderful traditional cream teas, with home-cooked scones and homemade jam.

“Edward was born in South Allington and bought the house and grounds when they were all in a very bad state. Over the years the family has created the lovely barn conversions, the house and grounds available today. As working farmers they are fully immersed in this coastal Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and work together with the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. There is a wealth of wildlife and birdlife available to see in the area, and even in the grounds. The South Hams is a beautiful part of Devon surrounded by coast and beaches. South Allington is situated in a beautiful tranquil valley and has easy access to the coastal path.”
Activity and Interests
Being in the South Hams we are surrounded by beaches, both sandy and shingle. Lannacombe is a 30 minute walk from South Allington, and there are other beautiful sandy beaches at East Portlemouth, which is roughly 10 minutes drive away. Sailing, surfing, fishing, boating, diving and all watersports are catered for within an hour's drive. There is easy access to the coastal path.
Both Exeter and Plymouth Airports are an hour away and the nearest Train station is Totnes, half an hour away. It is recommended to have a car but we have had guests walking the coastal path.
East Prawle is 3 miles away with a pub, The Pigs Nose, and a shop. Frogmore and Chillington are 4 miles away and each has a post office and pub. Kingsbridge is a market town 7 miles away, with the closest bank, and Dartmouth is 9 miles away. From Dartmouth you can take a steam train or river boat trip.
There are many local restaurants within 15 minutes drive. Kingsbridge has two supermarkets, Morrisons and Tesco. Dartmouth has a Marks and Spencer Food, Co-Op, Sainsburys and Lidl. The nearest bank is in Kingsbridge- Nat West, HSBC, Lloyds TSB and Barclays.

If unit is available please contact us to book. Confirmation of booking requires a cheque of half the amount with the balance payable a month before arrival. A separate security deposit of £100 is required to cover losses, damage and/or additional cleaning charges, if the property is left in an unsatisfactory condition. Obviously if the property is left as found, your £100 will be returned in full.
Short-term lets out of season are available.
The Coach House and Coachman's Lodge changeover days are Saturday and The Laurels is Friday. Arrival after 3pm and departing by 10am please

“South Allington is a tiny South Hams hamlet which is very peaceful and tranquil. There is a tennis court and croquet is available on the front lawn. The units have been renovated to a very high standard with all home comforts. Bedding and towels are provided, you just have to bring your food! There are many local attractions to keep a family happy and many good restaurants within a 20 minute drive.”
