Holiday Home in Cheilly Les Maranges, Saone-et-Loire, Burgundy - Located in the heart of the Burgundy Wine-Growing Region

The house is centrally located in the peaceful wine-producing village of Cheilly in the heart of the Maranges region of the Hautes Cotes de Beaune. A flight of stone steps leads to a balcony (with table and two chairs) and the front door. On the first floor the living/dining room includes a modern kitchen, dining area and comfortable seating area. A steep staircase leads to the 2nd floor where the criss-cross of the old rafters creates a delightful setting for the bedroom and en-suite bathroom. The house is lived in by the owner during the winter months and so has been furnished in a warm, attractive and practical manner. Her son (who is bilingual) lives opposite and is available not only for handing over the keys, but to give any information and advice to help you make the most of your stay.

About the Owner

While living in the Paris area when my husband worked at UNESCO, I had the opportunity of buying a house in Burgundy. We both fell in love with the region. After my husband's death, I decided to stay. I did a training course as a tourist guide and have had the pleasure over the past nineteen years of helping people from all over the world to discover the beauties of my land of adoption. My son lives at Cheilly les Maranges, an hour's drive south of where I live, and when he told me that the little house opposite his was up for sale, I decided to buy it. Having had it completely restored, I am able to spend the winter there, instead of in my rather isolated and large house in the country and let it to holiday makers the rest of the year.

Cheilly, Burgundy.

Our week in Cheilly was wonderful, the gite we stayed in was perfect

for us, very well appointed and lots of really nice touches. The owner

Paul was excellent, very helpful and always at hand for all our questions. Markets in local Chagny a must, Beaune, a highlight in

this area, Chateaux Cermatin delightful. Lovely restaurants in Rully

and Santenay. Excellent cycleways along the canals, you can hire bikes

in Saint Leger for a days ride very reasonably. And of course all the

beautiful wines and food from Bourgogne. Highly recommend this

property to everyone, we hope to be back in the future.

Cheilly is intersected by the rivers Cozanne and Dheune and by the Canal du Centre. The old canal towpath has been turned into a "Voie Vert" (Green Way), and the village is also close to the Santenay-Nolay "Voie Vert" (an old railway track). There are also lots of signposted footpaths to help you discover the attractions of the Burgundy countryside.

The train service on the line from Chalon-sur Saône to Monchanin has been improved recently. There are now 8 trains a day in each direction on weekdays (fewer on Saturdays and Sundays), which stop at Cheilly-les-Maranges. There is no extra charge for bicycles. The trains stop at Chagny for connections to Beaune and Dijon.

Cheilly has the following amenities:

Bar, tabac, restaurant, pizzeria 'Les Maranges'

Butcher/charcuterie, where you can also buy bread.

Post office, wine cellar.

There are also 8 wine producers, with tasting opportunities, all around the village.

Santenay has a few shops including a chemist, and is well known for its casino.

Chagny has a railway station, shops, supermarkets and an excellent street market on Sunday morning.

It is a region particularly rich in history.

Beaune is both interesting to visit and an important motorway junction (A6, A31,A36). There is a wide range of restaurants and wine cellars.

Autun is a Gallo-Roman town with impressive monuments including pre-Roman Celtic buildings. It is well worth a day's visit and the drive there through the Morvan forest enables you to discover another aspect of the beautiful Burgundy countryside.

Chalon Sur Saone is the administrative and commercial centre and the birthplace of photography (Niepce).
