Plus there's a nice upright piano for musicians. A paradise for nature lovers. A bathing lake and shops are only 5 minutes away by car. The hilltop village of Montcuq is renowned for its thriving Sunday market, and its historic fortified tower. Above all, Lafage offers total peace and quiet, with a terrace and barbeque that overlook a magnificent view and the last rays of the setting sun.

About the Owner

Joanna and Bill Stuart-Bruges bought their first property in France in 1973, when they originally fell in love with the amazing Lot/Dordogne/Aquitaine region. At that time Bill's job had taken them, just married, to Bordeaux. They already had little Lilac Cottage in Devon. Now based in Hampshire, they now spend half their time in France, where Joanna has built up a team of excellent local craftsmen and housekeepers to restore and help look after 3 châteaux, as well as the original little farmhouse Lafage. The family includes several musicians and there are now 5 grand pianos and one upright, distributed amongst the properties!

We were actually living in Bordeaux when friends persuaded us to explore the Lot region. Without doubt it is the most beautiful, unspoilt and historically rich area of France. It is no accident that the English used to inhabit it since the Middle Ages! Since 1973 the French roads have made it easier and easier to travel to this traffic-free peaceful area. There are spectacular chateaux, medieval villages, underground caves and of course the great rivers Lot and Dordogne. In summer the surrounding villages have many musical, theatrical and gastronomic events.

5 minutes drive to bathing lake, fishing permits available. 15 minutes drive to River Lot, canoes may be hired.


Bergerac 1 hour 15 min by car. Toulouse 1 hour 30 min. Bordeaux 1 hour 45 min. Rodez 2 hours. A car is essential for this region.


Montcuq 4 miles. Cahors 15 miles. River Lot 8 miles.
