Farmhouse with pool and open barn for games, perfect for family get-togethers

Updated: 12-Sep-2016
Farmhouse and converted barn in Vergt, Dordogne, Aquitaine - 3 bathroom, 5 bedroom (+ kids dorm) 5 Mins Drive From Village

The property has been lovingly restored in recent years, as a fabulous family home for the owners. For people who book Les Auzeloux, there is the opportunity now to rent out the recently converted 2 bedroom open plan barn, as ADDITIONAL rooms. Great for those with elderly parents who want to come on the family holiday, but also prefer some extra privacy and peace! Or for a family who feel more comfortable with their own space. As such, Le Petit Auzeloux is NOT available now to rent on its own in the high summer season, so that the owner's wish to provide a peaceful, private holiday rental is fulfilled. Out of the main season (July/August) this is available to rent with the private pool, with the main house being used by the owner. A lovely, special experience with its open, light feel: perfect for a couple or family with young kids who aren't confined to the school holiday booking period.

What is beautiful about the barn and the main farmhouse is the feeling of light and warmth. Exposed beams run throughout both, and both feature hand made staircases and mezzanine levels to maximize light.

Les Auxeloux: The beautiful farmhouse is light and airy, with a relaxed inside-outside feel. The country cottage kitchen has french doors leading to two patios on different levels: one for dining under the shade of the huge walnut tree, the other for relaxing on oversized sofas and comfy benches. Simply decorated throughout, the property features white washed walls, exposed beams and boasts a stunning galleried hall, relaxed lounge for evening games and reading, and an upstairs "dorm" for the kids to play and sleep. In addition, there are 3 large double bedrooms. The garden room on the ground floor has an ensuite bathroom with large shower, and features a private patio, double bed and study area. Upstairs are 2 additional double bedrooms , the dorm (with 2 double and 2 single beds) and a play area stocked with brio, lego and other toys.

Outside, in addition to the private pool and patio areas, this house has a huge open barn with table tennis and boules-a favourite with the little ones and an evening chill-out zone for the teenagers! Rugby, badminton and football matches are often arranged in the big field beside the house, and hide-and-seek is de rigeur! With tons of room inside and lots of space outside to let off steam, this is an easy place for kids to have fun and explore and for grown ups to unwind!

Le petit Auzeloux: (PLEASE CONTACT THE OWNER DIRECT IF YOU WISH TO BOOK AS SEPARATE UNIT. PLEASE NOTE ITS ONLY AVAILABLE OUT OF MAIN SEASON) This is an exceptionally beautiful 2 bedroom open plan cottage, featuring a mezzanine sleeping area, back bedroom with 2 double beds, french windows out the back to a private patio and inside/outside room with comfy sofas to unwind in! The private entrance to the barn leads to a boot room and large utility area. The open plan kitchen/dining area lead down steps to the relaxed sitting area. Further steps lead down to the large shower room. Upstairs on the mezzanine level is a delightful sleeping area with separate toilet and huge bedroom with 2 double beds beyond.

Details for holiday farmhouse LES AUZELOUX, 5 Bedrooms, Sleeps 10, 3 Bathrooms

Beautifully appointed farmhouse with large, airy rooms and lovely country style kitchen. With 3 double bedrooms and a kids dorm (which is 2 adjoining rooms with 2 double and 2 single beds) this house is perfect for family get togethers, or for those who like lots of space! Large enough to feel you can get away from the crowd: the sitting room has french windows off to the lovely courtyard garden, and is perfect for a quiet read or game of cards, and the upstairs landing is full of lego and other games for the kids to use as a place to play if they are tired of dive bombing each other in the pool! The pool was designed as a family "splash" pool, and is all one depth throughout both as a safety precaution and also because of years of fierce volley ball rivalries by various adult friends! The open barn has been invaluable over the years as a games room for evening table tennis competitions, as a place to eat outside even when it rains, and for the teenagers to have a hang out area!

About the Owner

Les Auzeloux is owned by a British family with 3 kids. We have had the property for over a decade and our kids have spent all the summers there, so its really perfect for anyone with children. Our boys are teenagers now but still love to come here. Where they used to make dens in the woods now they work out by the pool, spend hours playing rugby in the fields and play umpteen hours of card games in the family sitting room.

The Dordogne is a fantastic area as there is just so much to see and do, and we love the fact that we live just far enough away from the madding crowd to be able to relax but close enough to indulge!

Gorgeous converted farmhouse full of rustic charm, difficult to better this one

  • 5 of 5

Our group spanning 3 generations from 2 families arriving from Europe, North and South America had a fabulous time. We mainly used this wonderful home as a base from which to explore the many and varied treasures that Dordogne has to offer. But it would equally fulfil the needs of those looking for a more chilled out, relax at home/by the pool type of holiday.

Well equipped - we enjoyed the pool and table tennis - and with a massive garden, our dog had acres of room to chase balls.

Lovely walks through the countryside and neighbouring woods - thanks to Anne and Steve for the map with walks marked!

Anne and Steve, the owners, are extremely nice and helpful. We did have some problems with the wi-fi, which they did their utmost to resolve as quickly as possible. It would have been nice if the wi-fi had reached the downstairs bedroom - as it’s the best bedroom in the house. If that's important to anyone reading this, then ask whether the wi-fi has been extended to cover that room.

All in all, a wonderful home and a brilliant holiday - highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your positive comments, and so pleased you enjoyed our house! The wifi issues have now been resolved....as a tree had pulled the line down...but thanks for alerting us to the fact that the wifi doesn't extend to the downstairs bedroom. We will do our best to correct this! It was a pleasure to have you and your family with us, and we do welcome well behaved dogs such as yours!

The Farmhouse was stunning with plenty of space inside and outside for all of us, to enjoy.

The pool, the open barn and outside areas provided endless entertainment for the kids and the big kids (adults)!!!

A perfect venue for a family or group of people, we had a relaxing and fun filled time.

We can't wait to go back again!

From the Owner

We loved the relaxed feel to this property - we fell in love at first sight as we knew this house had the right ingredients for us, for a family holiday home - light, bright, surrounded by fields and woods for the kids to play, and easy to maintain. We have grown to love the area and enjoy all aspects of french life: the food, the wine, the markets and the chilled way of life, a far cry from our busy lives in Dubai!

Cap Ferret/Arcanchon is the nearest beach, which takes about 2 hours by car. We absolutely love the beaches around Cap Ferret and often go there for day trips. The daily market there is worth the trip alone! Pyla & its famous sand dune, the biggest in europe are also in the same area. There are wonderful sandy beaches, fish restaurants & some very chic clothes shops. A great day trip is to drive to Arcanchon, then take the ferry across to Cap Ferret for lunch and go home via Bordeaux for dinner

From the Owner

We wanted this house to be, as its most important feature, a relaxed place where our family and friends would love to visit. We have enjoyed entertaining here over the years, and are delighted to have found that the people who book our house use it in the same way. Lots of folk want to go on family holidays with either other family members or friends, and thats what our home is especially good at! We can cater for two families easily, and with the addition of the newly converted extra barn, we can make this easier by giving some of the group that extra bit of privacy.

  • Perfect place for families to get together: spacious, kid-friendly, private. Bookings often for family reunions. Close to the wonderful attractions of the Dordogne but just outside the main tourist area so easy to access without the hassle of dealing with crowds and traffic! A much loved summer property by the owners! Outside: Further details outdoors: The property has a wonderful setting, set on a quiet lane, and surrounded by fields and woods. There are umpteen places to sit and relax! In the courtyard there is a natio area under the wisteria to catch the morning sun! Off the main farmhouse we have 2 patios leading off from the kitchen – one shaded by a huge walnut tree, the other in full sun. Across the garden leads to a private pool (9 x 5m) and patio with pergola with all the usual sun beds, kiddie’s pool toys etc. Beyond the pool is the orchard, and further into the woods are dens and bamboo forests. Outside the barn is a patio with 2 levels: one covered chill area, the other in full sun. From our property you can walk or cycle along little paths into the countryside. If you bring bikes, its a great morning activity to cycle down the back lane into the village to get fresh croissants (takes about 30 mins/5 mins by car)- just remember that you have to cycle back up the hill at the end!
