Absolutely lovely cottage in beautiful area.

  • 5 of 5

Just arrived home from one week stay at this lovely cottage. We read reviews before we booked and then spoke to owner who assured us any problems had been sorted and all repairs had been done. We were so pleased when we arrived at the cottage , No problems at all .. My parents came with us and stayed in smaller house as bathroom is on same level as bedroom which suited them very well, there would be plenty of room for eight people. Monfiquet is a beautiful area, and so close to D Day beaches Bayuex and other attractions, would definitely return to La Pommeraie. Dave and Sue Richards Virginia Water Surrey.

Please read this review before booking!

  • 3 of 5

I read previous reviews before booking this property - now that I have stayed there I think the previous reviews don't give a rounded view. The property has pros and cons. Given the choice, I would give it 2.5 stars, primarily for the location near Bayeux. I'm giving it 3 as it is pretty inexpensive for the time of year.

I disagree with previous comments that this property would be suitable for disabled visitors - the narrow entrances and bathroom arrangements in la petite maison and the different levels on the ground floor in the main house (step up to dining area, down to bathroom, etc) would be very awkward.

Pros:

Great location for Bayeux and all the WW2 beaches, memorials and museums. 20 minutes to Bayeux, which is a fantastic city, and around 30 to the coast. Pretty wooded area, with handy villages for food and coffees, etc

Pleasant kitchen/dining room and living room seating - adequate for our group of 6.

Kitchen well stocked with saucepans, plates, cutlery.

New washing machine and efficient tumble dryer in second kitchen in la petite maison. Washing line to rear of property.

Plenty of hot water for our group of 6 (but see note on bathrooms).

Delicious cooking apples on the trees in the garden.

Rental is inexpensive for the area and time of year.

Cons:

Bathrooms are poor - when we arrived neither shower worked (we managed to fix one), fittings and decor in the main house bathroom are very dated, water pressure is very low so that filling a bath was not practical for us.

Bedrooms in la petite maison are basic - very little furniture, and the downstairs double is simply a small double bed in a small room - you walk directly into this room and through it to get to the bathroom and upstairs. There is no other furniture.

Furnishings in the two double bedrooms in the main house are better. Both these rooms are reached via steep wooden staircases and neither has a door. One bedroom is above the kitchen, the other above (and completely open to) the living room.

There is no useable outdoor table, meaning that outdoor dining was not possible.

The house is close to neighbouring properties - the constant barking from three dogs penned up next door often went on into the night.

All in all, we did enjoy our week in Normandy - we would certainly visit the area again. The house is pretty, and has great potential. I'd be happy to pay a bit more for better bathrooms!

Can't wait to go back

  • 5 of 5

As we pulled into the drive we were greeted by Louise, who told us how everything worked and where everything was, and gave us her number in case of an emergency.

We settled in straight away, the house, well actually its a lovely old barn, is immaculate, with lovely furnishings and so spacious and clean. We went out touring on some days to nearby Bayeux, and Balleroy, and also mamy of the small villages nearby, also managed to go to the local markets, it was lovely! Can't fault the house, we had some wonderful walks in the nearby forest, can't wait to go back next year!

Negatives as well as positives

  • 3 of 5

Although the cottage is in a lovely area ,unfortunately there were a fair few negatives .

There was a note left for our arrival saying that the toilet in the annexe was leaking and a towel had been put on the floor. A plumber was supposed to have been asked to come but unfortunately never materialised. As a result ,by the end of our holiday , there was a brown stain seeping from under the pedestal. Not very nice if one had to go in there with bare feet as this was also were the shower was.

From the time that we arrived the double sink in the main house started blocking. This was reported to the person looking after the property in France and once again we were told that she would arrange a plumber. The blockage got worse and worse until by the third day of our holiday the sinks were not draining at all and we were not able to prepare fresh food or use the dishwasher as this also drained into the sink. Every day we had to look at dirty water which started to smell and we were forced to eat out more than we would perhaps have chosen to do and also to carry all our washing up over to the annexe. Good job we had fine weather!!!! As stated before the plumber never came even though an emergency one was going to be organised by the property owners husband who came to have a look one evening. We never saw the person who was looking after it for the English owner.

There was damp and peeling paint in one of the bedrooms in the main house.

Smaller things were the grass not being cut before we arrived; a few cobwebs;the wardrobe door hanging off in the annexe, and the fridge. The cottage is advertised as sleeping 8 to 10 but , had we been able to eat in more, we would have ended up going shopping every other day as no way was the fridge adequate for even eight people. The one in our motor home is just as big and that's a two berth. There is a freezer in the annexe but there is definitely not enough room to store fresh food in the main house ( and of course the drink!!)

All these things spoil , through lack of maintenance , what could be a really lovely property

Beautiful

  • 4 of 5

What a surprise we got when we opened the door! The cottage is beautiful, much bigger than it looks on the pictures. The pictures don't do it justice as it's much more bigger and beautiful. We were a family of 9, 6 adults and 3 teenagers and we had plenty of space. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need. The petite Maison is also perfect for travellers with disabilities as it has a double bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor. The cottage is in a lovely setting, on the edge of a forest and very peaceful. D Day beaches are 15/20 mins drive, and very easy to find. Balleroy is a 5 minute car journey for fresh croissants and breads each morning. We really enjoyed our stay here and will definitely stay here again. I highly recommend booking this cottage. Thank you Louise! It was lovely to meet you during our stay. The only negative I would mention is the bathroom in the main cottage. Although we had plenty of hot water the bathroom would benefit from a shower as the bath is very small.

Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family of 6 adults spent our vacation at this lovely cottage from Oct. 3 until Oct. 11. We took our 89 year old dad on this trip to visit his brother's grave at the US Cemetery at Normandy. We loved the cottage - everything was wonderful - the country side is beautiful and the cottage is located in the country away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. We really enjoyed out stay and loved the cottage. My dad loved wondering around the grounds which he enjoyed very much as he lives in the country in SC in the US and he felt right at home. He made the comment that he wished he had something like the cottage in the US. If we ever decided to travel to this part of France again we would defintely stay here again. We all truly enjoyed out stay - it was neat and cozy. Just wondered why there were no reviews on this as it seems it is rented frequently.
