Quirky and charmingly modernised Pigeonnier (dovecote), ideal for a small family wanting a large pool and plenty of outdoor space. The Pigeonnier is surrounded by fields and enjoys panoramic views over open countryside. It dates back to the late 19th century and stands in over a hectare of land. Next to the swimming pool - which is very large for a house of this size - is a pleasant shaded terrace where meals can be eaten. The property is completely secluded with the nearest neighbors being a field away.

We have two sons, three dogs and up until recently ran a Guest House in the Cotswolds which meant we didn't really have much time to visit the house. Something we hope to remedy in the future!

The perfect place to unwind

We were looking for a short break to totally get away from it all and spent hours researching all options, none of which seemed quite right... until we came across the pigeonnier and booked it immediately. The reality beat our already high expectations; it couldn't have been more perfect. We enjoyed total peace and quiet and uninterrupted views in all directions - either from the beautiful first floor balcony (accessed from the master bedroom) or the raised patio area under the huge tree. Despite the fact the weather was cooling when we visited at the end of September, the pool was lovely and warm and we spent most days reading and enjoying a cold beer on the comfortable sun loungers. The amenities inside and out were spot on - the fully equipped kitchen meant we picked up supplies from the local villages and supermarket and cooked every evening, and whilst the inside space was cosy it was perfect for the two of us to spend the evenings playing cards and eating cheese! It really was the ideal place to unwind, the only downside that we booked for just four nights. We are already planning our return next year!

Surpassed Expectations

This is the first Gite we have stayed in that has totally surpassed expectations. The house itself, though clearly small, never feels claustrophobic because you will spend 90% of your time outside in the magnificent garden or visiting the surrounding area. If you want to escape from it all, this is absolute perfection.

La Pidge (as we have come to know it) is separated over 4 floors...

The roof space has been converted to a twin room, ideal for the kids. A tv and Xbox 360 surprised us on arrival, turning out to be perfect for those 'Don't wake us up in the morning please' days. The next floor down is the Master bedroom and wc/shower room. The Master bedroom has plenty of storage to unpack into, tasteful decoration and a lovely balcony with seating, overlooking the pool and beyond. The ground floor is the kitchen/lounge and has everything you could need. The stereo got well used (nobody in the neighborhood to annoy so all windows open and volume up most days), the TV had satellite channels (used once for the F1 Grand Prix), well fitted kitchen and comfortable chairs, not that you'll sit in them. Finally, the basement! Massive shower, another wc and a pretty vast fridge freezer were used daily. A great area to change into and out of wet things. All 4 floors are connected with a single and quirky spiral staircase. Took some getting used to but at least it slows the kids down.

Outside: This is what we went for. The pool is fantastic, the patio area around it ideal. The raised patio where the BBQ and seating is, was absolutely perfect. Sitting under 'The Tree' of an evening, entrecote on the barbie, glass of St Emillion in hand, watching the sunset whilst the kids splashed in the pool was about as close to perfection as it's possible to get. It's for this reason that the second we got back, we booked a fortnight for next summer!

La Pidge is about as far out of the way as you'd want to be whilst still being 10-15 minutes pleasant drive from villages and town life.

We've stayed in a few gites now and although we've always had a lovely time in the main, there's always been something that hasn't been 'as described' or some experience that took something away from our holiday. This is the first place that has surpassed expectations and so it's the first place I've written a review for. We can't wait to go back!

A perfect stay !

This was our first visit to France with our children. The kids adored the Pigeonneir and so did we : plenty of room, bags of character, with a superb pool, and garden big enough to play football on ! The owners have provided toys for the pool, and the garden, and the property is perfectly presented and immaculate.

The local area is beautiful and the Pigeonnier is in the ideal place to experience the best France has to offer - beautiful countryside, picturesque villages, and impressive cities. In terms of the immediate vicinity, there are plenty of villages, shops, and restaurants dotted around - and most towns have local markets at least once a week.

If you like cities, then Bordeaux is just over an hour drive down the autoroute, and is well worth a visit.

We could not have picked a nicer property to stay in - and the hospitality of the owners when we arrived was first class. Highly recommended :)

Excellent holiday accommodation

I dont usually write reviews, but this place really deserved one. The pigeonnier is in a fantastic setting, with the most amazing pool. It's laid out to make to best use of the space available and it really does this well. The owners really have thought of almost every detail, even down to movies fo the kids. My only negative was that ther was no wi-fi. Otherwise it was truly EXCELLENT.

Rural idyll

We stayed at the pigeonneir in August. It was exactly as described, small house big pool. We have never had such a great pool and the quirky dovecote was perfect for us. Our two boys had all they wanted and there was enough to do locally for the days out.

When the opportunity presented itself to buy the Pigeonnier we just couldn't resist it. It was in a really sorry state when we first went to see it, but we knew with hard work it could be transformed into a really nice home, which reflected our simple tastes and uncluttered style. Yes it is compact - but the outside space is a huge bonus and anyway who wants to be inside when the sun is shining!

Travel:

Airports - Bergerac - 60km; Bordeaux - 123 km; Toulouse - 154 km. All distances are approximate.

Ferries - Santander 290 miles (5 hrs); St Malo - 400 miles (6 hrs); Caen - 450 miles (6 1/2 hrs)

Distances:

All shops and services (including a bank) and a weekly market (Wednesdays), can be found in Castelmoron-sur-Lot (6km). There is a Friday market in St Liverade-sur-Lot (12km), the town also has a supermarket. The 12th century bastide market town of Villeneuve-sur-Lot with all shopping facilities is approximately 21km away and there are plenty of supermarkets on the main route into Villeneuve.

Further Details:

There are a number of great farmers' markets - in particular in Laparade, which takes place every Tuesday evening and Fongrave on Thursday evenings, during July and August. For both markets make sure you get there early to nab the best tables. Everything from snails and steaks to local crafts can be bought, as well as beautiful local wines!

Set in its on grounds, the Pigeonnier is a truly peaceful place. Somewhere to relax. Turn off the mobile, get a good book, a glass of wine and sit by the pool, relax and forget what's going on in the rest of the world for a while. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: If you are interested in making a booking for my property, I suggest you use "Enquire Now" rather than "Request to Book" to contact me. Owners Direct have chosen to add a "service fee" when the "Request to Book" option is chosen. Effectively, if you opt to make your reservation via "Request to Book", rather than via "Enquire Now", it will cost you more. I have been processing payments from guests via cheque/BACS transfer successfully for over 8 years and have never had a complaint or problem with payment security.
