Cottage with garden in the High Alpujarras, Andalucia, Spain - House with Moorish Features in a Peaceful Location with Stunning Mountain Views
Spacious house for 2, totally private and full of light, in a small garden overlooking the tiny Moorish hamlet of Atalbeitar, one of the best preserved in the Alpujarra, on the Southern slopes of Sierra Nevada. The Arabic background of the area is reflected in many details of the decoration of this charming house, including ancient doors and furniture salvaged in the village itself and restored. From its large covered terrace and from every room there are stunning mountain views and beautiful sunsets. One can relax in the shade of an almond tree in its private Mediterranean garden. It's situation at 3500 ft makes it is a good starting point for walks in rural countryside between white villages or for hiking to the highest peaks.

Winding our way up the Sierra Nevada mountain range to the tiny hamlet of Atalbéitar we were enchanted with the view and changing landscape. The house with its own garden and terrace provided a quiet interlude to our road trip. The birds, sunsets, and a sense of old world Andalusia was priceless. We hiked, cooked and enjoyed meeting some of the villagers with their great stories about the local environs. Our only regret is that we didn't plan a longer stay to relax and melt into the village life.
An ideal place to get away from it all
The cottage was clean, comfortable and charming. Ideal for a couple who enjoy walking in beautiful mountains along ancient pathways. All pretty basic but great to get away from the bustling crowds. Although we were most surprised to find WiFi available. The village is very quiet, almost like a ghost town at times, but the locals we did meet were very friendly. The bottom line is we had a most enjoyable relaxing week and are most likely to return.
This is a lovely, peaceful property situated in the heart of a beautiful area, perfect for hiking (only for the very fit!) As the crow flies it is near several villages, however these involve steep rough walks which are enjoyable, but you will probably drive if you want to go for a coffee/meal.
I would highly recommend casa Julio in pampeiera for food. food great and very reasonable.
Inside, the cottage is as described, spacious comfortable and clean. I was disappointed however to find that the since the photos were posted, a great deal of shrubbery has grown up which really obscures the potentially fabulous views.
From reading other reviews I guessed there wasn't a welcome package, and for us this wasn't a problem as we were familiar with the area and had popped into a supermarket on the way from the airport. i do agree though that it's very daunting to arrive in an unfamiliar area and have to try and find a shop (particularly on a Sunday). Unfortunately In my experience, welcome packages tend to be the exception rather than the rule which is a pity.
Overall I would recommend this property if you want a very, very quiet, peaceful holiday with plenty of energetic walking.
An attractive and comfortable casita with splendid views
A pretty and well set up house, overlooking the valley. Excellent directions from Malaga, although took nearer three hours to get there due, not only to unfamiliarity, but also to the long and winding roads up and down the mountainsides. Perfect for serious hikers, but not for the creakier, less agile (like me!), due to steep and sometimes rocky inclines and descents, with not a lot of flat and gentle strolling or ambling pathways. Car essential, as no supermarkets or restaurants within easy walking distance. Overall, a good time with fantastic scenery and warm welcome - even tho' our hiking days are over!
Beautiful casita, thoughtfully and sympathetically designed. Perfect location for walkers. Great base for exploring the High Alpujarra, and for walking in the mountains. Good weakly market in nearby Pitres. plenty of places to eat/ take coffe or a drink within 20-30 minutes walk.Highly recommended.
Our trip was for a long weekend in February, where we wanted to (briefly) explore the Alpujara region. The cottage was ideal for our needs, quiet, comfortable and set just outside a small village/ hamlet in peacefuland beatiful countryside. The cottage itself was very tastefully decorated & looked after; clean and spacious. The house fully met descriptions as advertised. Dominique, the owner, was friendly and attentive (bringing candles during a general power cut in a storm), though a small "welcome pack" might be a pleasant gesture and an extra charge (6€), for a small bundle of kindling for the fire, seemed a little unnecessary, though neither distracted from the overall quality and our enjoyment of the place.
The hamlet of Pitres itself is easily accessible from the main road and in an exquisite setting, which during our time all the Almond trees were in full bloom, offering greater beauty to the "medieval walk" to neighbouring hamlets of Ferreirola and Mecina Fondales in a valley, that in honesty, was prettier than the more famous parts and towns of the central Alpujarra. We would definitely recommend La Casa Mora to friends and family.
