Overview

Property

Updated: 07-Aug-2016
Cottage near Pessac sur Dordogne, France - Peaceful Location - In Small Hamlet. Flexible, mid week, rentals on request

A 3 bed cottage in a small hamlet of 5 houses right on the banks of the river Dordogne. There is no though traffic apart from the occasional bike or tractor! It has a kitchen/diner with wood burning stove, two living rooms and a shower room/WC on the ground floor. Upstairs two double bedrooms (king size beds, one with a washbasin) overlook the river with a large twin bedded room (additional single available) overlooking the garden at the back. Whilst not a deluxe, hi-tech renovation the cottage is fully furnished and equipped and WiFi is available. The garden behind the cottage is approx half an acre of grass and woodland. The part closest to the house and the pool area is securely fenced. The pool is behind the owner's cottage next door. Holiday makers have exclusive use from 09.00 to 18.00 and evening use by arrangement. It is 5 x 11 metres / uniform 1.4 m deep and has an electrically operated security shutter. The pool is heated if necessary when in use - May to September inclusive.

We arrived very late evening to a great welcome from Jenny and Peter. The welcome pack was comprehensive and generous with lovely local produce. The whole house is spacious and comfortable and is full of character. The kitchen is very well equipped with every conceivable implement to hand. The patio area is furnished with table and chairs and from here we enjoyed watching the swans, herons and buzzards and just taking in the views of the river. The pool and pool area is very well looked after and gets full sun all day long if you want to top up your suntan. We couldn't find fault with anything. We were visiting the area for a family wedding at Chateau Soulac and would strongly recommend this property to future wedding guests as it is less than 10 minutes from the venue. Loved it!

Peaceful, well-equipped cottage, great pool

  • 4 of 5

We found this property to be very much as described. It's a great location for a peaceful holiday right next to the Dordogne river. The cottage is well equipped with everything you'll need. The owners are just next door and are very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The main things we enjoyed were the lovely main bedrooms overlooking the river and the excellent pool. When you have two teenage daughters it's great to have two showers too!

Although not central to the Dordogne area, it is very close to St. Emilion and Bergerac and lots of other small villages and chateaux. If you want to venture further afield then Bordeaux (use the excellent park and ride) and Arcachon to the West are within fairly easy reach, as are some of the main Dordogne attractions to the East.

As described in the listing, it's an older property rather than a modern refit, but it is quite quaint, sufficiently spacious (especially the bedrooms) and clean.

We would visit again and would look forward to enjoying morning coffee and croissant looking out over the river again!

Super holiday

  • 5 of 5

Just returned after an excellent week with children and grandchildren. Rustic typical French house with an excellently equipped kitchen and UK TV. Beautiful and quiet location right by the river. Kids spent most of the week in the pool which was warm and clean. Our hostess Jenny went out of her way to help and assist with whatever we wanted to do and Hoolie the dog was great fun. Would thoroughly recommend it for a family holiday.

Coast/Beach:

There is a large leisure lake about 20km north with tennis, canoes, restaurants and a sandy beach for swimming.

It's just over two hours drive to the Atlantic coast for surfing etc.

Canoes & bikes are available to hire in the village. The river is one of the cleanest in France but only suitable for strong swimmers who like to "swim on the spot"!

Travel:

The closest channel port is St. Malo - 350 miles away. Calais is about 600 miles. Possible discount available on Brittany Ferries.

Bergerac is the closest airport - just over 30 mins away. Many low cost airlines fly in here from many UK airports.

Bordeaux (Merignac) airport is 1 hr+ away.

The TGV trains come from London (via Lille or Paris) into Libourne (30 mins) or Bordeaux.

Distances:

Pessac has a good butcher/small supermarket and a "general store" with petrol pumps. There is an excellent restaurant 1/2 km away and a small bar/ restaurant on the quayside in the summer run by the canoe hire people. Pizza van in the square one night a week.

Ste.Foy la Grande (15 km) has large supermarkets as well as a good selection of "normal" shops, several good restaurants and a really great market on Saturdays. Night market with food and entertainment on Thursdays in July and August.

Further Details:

There are lots of activities in the summer - street markets & fairs - firework displays - concerts & a 'son et lumière' - the amazing reenactment of the last battle of the 100 Years War at Castillon la Bataille. Wine tasting, chateaux, pre-historic caves, medieval villages...... the Dordogne is a wonderful area for a memorable holiday and Les Sommieres is a magical spot.
