Beautiful authentic North Wales cottage. Cosy and great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay in Mawddach COttage. Cosy and warm, comfortable beds and everything you needed. My 6 year old went around the first day saying how kind the owners were with the Bara Brith on arrival and the steam train tickets left that they had won in a raffle! Beautiful walk up to blue lake from the house and stunning beach for sunsets and kite flying. Also amazing Indian restaurant in Fairbourne itself. A great trip and beautiful cottage. We hope to return. Thank you!

Perfectly charming - perfect for our needs

  • 5 of 5

Cottage was as described, great use of space - and great bedrooms, especially the master. The 'welcome pack' of butter jam and bara brith was a great surprise, and the bara brith was to die for. Solid comfortable furniture through the downstairs meant a real relaxing stay. No dedicated car parking, but I was able to park off road only 50 yards away. Well recommended.

Cozy Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed here in late September and loved it. The cottage is cozy and comfortable. When we arrived we were greeted by a housewarming gift of locally made bread, butter, and jam and a very clean home. The location is wonderful and the owners were very easy and pleasant to work with. An all around great experience. We definitely recommend and hope to return!

We loved to stay at this well-equipped cottage which was close to the beach and well-situated also for hikes in the mountains.

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful place and everything we needed for a boys weekend. Spent a lot of time cooking and eating after some breath taking walks. Great view towards Barmouth from the rear patio. The only problem is we all thought it was a little romantic, so I have to go again with my wife! Win win. Would strongly recomend.

Location

From the Owner

Mawddach Cottage has been much loved by members of our family for 2 generations. Since taking ownership from our parents in 2011 we have been renovating it in stages while trying to preserve the charm of the original miner's cottage. We are very proud of what has been achieved, from a new slate roof to a complete reworking of the layout upstairs. It is a very cosy and comfortable place for a holiday and we hope to keep this for the next generation of our family to enjoy.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Barpub : Fairbourne at 2 Kilometres Nearest Train : Fairbourne at 2 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : A493 Nearest Restaurant : Fairbourne at 2 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Fairbourne beach at 0.3 Kilometres Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

Access to Fairbourne beach (safe for swimming) is 3 minutes walk down a quiet lane. It is a beautiful beach with lots of sand at low tide, much loved by children. Great walks to the peninsular along the beach, you can walk all the way into Barmouth. Many walks in the surrounding hills, including the famous Cader Idris mountain.

The Fairbourne Light Railway runs to the point where you can take the ferry to Barmouth, the traditional seaside town, with a large amusement centre for children and restaurants.

Distances:

Fairbourne with shops and restaurants is a ten minute walk from the cottage. Dolgellau is about 11 miles away and has all the supermarkets, shops, banks and restaurants you will need (see below for our recommendations).

Further Details:

The cottage is set in the picturesque Snowdonia National Park. Many small towns are within easy reach, e.g. Towyn, Machynlleth, Aberdovey to the south and Barmouth, Harlech and Portmeirion to the north. There are copper mines, slate mines and the Blaenau Festiniog railway to visit as well. For a spectacular day out, visit Snowdon itself (41 miles), using the railway to climb to the top, or hike up Cader Idris (19 miles).

Our favourite eateries are Penmaenuchaf Hall Hotel, Y Meirionnydd and Tafarn y Gader Tapas Bar, all in Dolgellau and Bwyty Mawddach Restaurant in Llanelltyd. These are all a 15 minute drive away. Dolgellau also has a great coffee shop and internet cafe which we frequent regularly while visiting, T. H. Roberts. There is a good Indian restaurant in Fairbourne, Indiana Cuisine, a 10 min walk. Nearest good pubs we recommend are George III, on the road to Dolgellau, approx 10 mins drive; Gwin Dylanwad Wine in Dolgellau; The Garthangharad Hotel is in the next village on from Friog, Llwyngwril, 10 mins drive from the cottage. Further away near Machynlleth we love Ynyshir Hall.
