About Naomi

UK family

Naomi purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Naomi chose Gwynedd - Snowdonia

Mawddach Cottage has been much loved by members of our family for 2 generations. Since taking ownership from our parents in 2011 we have been renovating it in stages while trying to preserve the charm of the original miner's cottage. We are very proud of what has been achieved, from a new slate roof to a complete reworking of the layout upstairs. It is a very cosy and comfortable place for a holiday and we hope to keep this for the next generation of our family to enjoy.

What makes this cottage unique

Mawddach Cottage is well situated, within easy walking distance to the beach, Fairbourne or the mountains and only a short car ride away from the regional towns of Dolgellau, Towyn and Barmouth.

A lovely relaxing stay

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I had a lovely 3 day stay in the cottage in early July. The weather was fantastic and the cottage had everything we needed. We'd definitely stay again.

great location for a fun packed weekend

  • 4 of 5

We were a party of 4 adults, 2 children and 1 baby! Had a great weekend stay in this well-equipped & clean cottage. A great location where we enjoyed the walk, using the footbridge over the bay to Barmouth for ice creams (knickerbocker parlour), a good selection of pubs and places to eat. We also enjoyed using the small ferry and miniature train from Fairbourne. A quick car journey (25mins) to enjoy the scenery and facilities at coed y brenin for a bike ride/walk. Cottage had two reception rooms, both with TV's which meant children could be in one and grown ups in the other, lovely sun spot in the garden (weather permitting). Hosts were more than helpful when recommending a place to stay the night before our stay at the cottage, went out of their way to organise some minor details for our stay to make it a most enjoyable weekend. Would stay again and recommend for others.

Beautiful Cottage full of character in a great location to explore the Welsh coast & mountains

  • 5 of 5

We're an active family of five with a passion for mountain biking that loves the Welsh countryside. We've been visiting Wales for years but this is our 1st stay in this area. We were initially looking for a base to visit one of our favourite riding spots in the UK, Coed y Brenin & Mawddach Cottage in Friog seemed to tick all the boxes being less than a 30 min drive away. It also has the benefit of being a very short walk from the beach & Fairbourne for local shops. We took a short trip out on bikes to explore the local coastline & Fairbourne to discover a very walker/cycle friendly route along the coast heading towards Barmouth & there is a lovely miniature railway with regular train rides & right at the mouth of the estuary is a regular passenger ferry across the water to Barmouth. The small boats carry approximately 6 people at a time. The best way to reach Barmouth by road is across a small toll bridge (70p/car) a few miles up the road to Dollgellau. I would recommend driving as it's a fair walk & the road isn't particularly cycle friendly!! Barmouth is a beautiful little seaside town & worth a visit. The local beach is wide & sandy all along it's length. We didn't explore much more locally as we were essentially there for 3 days riding at the Coed y Brenin mountain bike trail centre, which is still the UK's largest purpose built cycle trail centre. This caters for riders, runners & walkers of all abilities in breathtaking surroundings. There are a lot of facilities on site. Mawddach Cottage provided us with plenty of room for us & our 3 son's with all the facilities you could need. ASDA deliver food locally in the area to coincide with a visit. The cottage was well furnished & very cosy. We didn't need to use the log burner as it was quite warm. The garden at the rear is on different levels so you can get the sun late into the day. There was plenty of room up there to safely store our 5 bikes as well. We have expensive high end mountain bikes but felt they were safe & secure well locked up in the garden. There is plenty of garden furniture which we managed to sit out on in the sun with a cold one during the evening!! All in all I think Naomi & Andrew have done a 1st class job restoring this beautiful cottage & we'll definitely be back to stay again. We also met the local team who care for the cottage & they were lovely too. Nice touch with the welcome pack including home made fruit cake....yum!!

Coast/Beach:

Access to Fairbourne beach (safe for swimming) is 3 minutes walk down a quiet lane. It is a beautiful beach with lots of sand at low tide, much loved by children. Great walks to the peninsular along the beach, you can walk all the way into Barmouth. Many walks in the surrounding hills, including the famous Cader Idris mountain.

The Fairbourne Light Railway runs to the point where you can take the ferry to Barmouth, the traditional seaside town, with a large amusement centre for children and restaurants.

Distances:

Fairbourne with shops and restaurants is a ten minute walk from the cottage. Dolgellau is about 11 miles away and has all the supermarkets, shops, banks and restaurants you will need (see below for our recommendations).

Further Details:

The cottage is set in the picturesque Snowdonia National Park. Many small towns are within easy reach, e.g. Towyn, Machynlleth, Aberdovey to the south and Barmouth, Harlech and Portmeirion to the north. There are copper mines, slate mines and the Blaenau Festiniog railway to visit as well. For a spectacular day out, visit Snowdon itself (41 miles), using the railway to climb to the top, or hike up Cader Idris (19 miles).

Our favourite eateries are Penmaenuchaf Hall Hotel, Y Meirionnydd and Tafarn y Gader Tapas Bar, all in Dolgellau and Bwyty Mawddach Restaurant in Llanelltyd. These are all a 15 minute drive away. Dolgellau also has a great coffee shop and internet cafe which we frequent regularly while visiting, T. H. Roberts. There is a good Indian restaurant in Fairbourne, Indiana Cuisine, a 10 min walk. Nearest good pubs we recommend are George III, on the road to Dolgellau, approx 10 mins drive; Gwin Dylanwad Wine in Dolgellau; The Garthangharad Hotel is in the next village on from Friog, Llwyngwril, 10 mins drive from the cottage. Further away near Machynlleth we love Ynyshir Hall.
