Cottage in Hackness, North York Moors National Park, England - Picturesque And Unspoilt Village, Only 5 Miles From Scarborough
Derwent View is a cosy and welcoming cottage, with modern day comforts to ensure you have a relaxing and happy holiday. It is situated in the pretty village of Hackness, just five miles from Scarborough.
Wonderfully positioned for exploring the fabulous coastline, the North York Moors National Park and the nearby Yorkshire Wolds.
Two bedrooms - one with a king size bed ("ridiculously comfortable" according to one of our guests), one with twin beds - a fully equipped kitchen, and separate utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer and fridge freezer. FREE wi-fi internet and Freesat TVs in sitting room and main bedroom.
The family friendly resorts of Scarborough and Filey are a short drive away. So too are the picturesque seaside village of Robin Hood's Bay, atmospheric Whitby with its wonderful ruined abbey and the birdwatchers’ paradise of Bempton Cliffs where puffins can be seen. Stunning coastal walks and beaches within easy reach.
Just up the road is Dalby Forest with miles of mountain bike trails and lovely walks - FREE entry to the forest for cottage guests, saving up to £7 a day.
But your holiday doesn't have to be action-packed! Why not relax in our lovely south facing garden with views across the River Derwent to the beautiful dale beyond - or stretch out on the comfy sofa in front of a roaring log fire. Basket of logs and coal included, but central heating in all rooms too.
Traditional pub and country house restaurants nearby. Great fish and chips, supermarket and petrol station within a short drive. And, lots to see and do in nearby Scarborough, including the world famous Stephen Joseph theatre, and the irresistible Harbour Bar for the best ice cream we've tasted.
Short breaks may be available - usually out of the main season, but at other times if we are not booked up. Just ask us for details. Please respect our home by not smoking anywhere at Derwent View.

Welcoming homely cottage
What a find! A delightful spacious homely cottage with some original features. Without doubt the nicest property we have stayed in. It was lovely, clean and well maintained. The contact that we had with Gill, the property owner left us feeling we were genuinely welcome. The property is an ideal base for Dalby Forrest and the coast. We loved every minute of our stay and just wished we had stayed longer!
A home from home in stunning surroundings.
Derwent View is a truly beautiful cottage set in the beautiful surroundings of the North York Moors. The property is exceptionally well cared for, has everything you'd need even down to e smallest details. The cottage is warm and comfortable and feels like home from the moment you walk in. The owner Gill was a pleasure to deal with and sent fantastic information across up to us well in advance which allowed us to plan our trip and make the best of the time we had there. I thoroughly recommend this gorgeous cottage, it's prefect for couples looking to hide away from the world, we had our two young children and our dog with us, they loved the outside spaces, the views and the array of animals that could be seen from the cottage. Dalby Forest is well worth a visit if you get the opportunity, it's a magical place and you can lose yourself amongst its vastness and is only 4 miles from the cottage. Thanks you for sharing this lovely place.
My last review only awarded the cottage 4/5!!!! I must have made a mistake as the cottage is worthy of 10/5!!!! The cottage is more than anyone would want for a peaceful, restful stay. The facilities are fab and it is so cosy you just don't want to go home.
Took my children and niece away for a quick break - this cottage is an absolute diamond. we can't wait to go back in the summer - might just claim squatters rights :-) the most homely rental we have ever had the privilege to stay in! And we've rented from H from Steps!!!
Christmas at Derwent View
We have just had a lovely week staying in this delightful cottage, the owners have furnished the cottage in a comfortably, relaxing and tasteful way with lots of extras I have never found in other holiday rental homes. The owners went the extra mile by personally decorating the cottage with a Christmas tree and other seasonal decorations, with the log fire blazing away all we needed was the snow.
Large forest locally which you could walk or mountain bike in for days without ever seeing the same place again.
Lovely beaches where you can walk your dog out of season I don't know which the dogs liked best the forest or the beach.
Would highly recommend for any time of the year lots of walking and towns like Whitby and Scarborough to visit.
Activity and Interests
The wonderful seaside resort of Scarborough is just 5 miles from the cottage with its mix of Victorian architecture, two fine beach bays, a superb choice of theatres, cinemas, clubs, bars and restaurants. Quieter family friendly Filey is also a short, easy drive away. Whitby (17 miles) with its close links to Captain Cook and Dracula is a wonderful day out while Robin Hood's Bay (15 miles) is one of the prettiest villages along the Yorkshire Heritage Coast. Stunning coastal walking close by.
Closest international airport is Leeds Bradford 70 miles. A car is the easiest way to get to Derwent View - and to explore the surrounding countryside - but there are good train services to Scarborough and the cottage is a short taxi ride from Scarborough station. Wonderful country walks are available from the cottage doorstep. And don't forget the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway from nearby Pickering, Levisham, Grosmont or Goathland - a wonderfully nostalgic train journey.
Scarborough 5 miles. Dalby Forest for "Go Ape" and bicycle hire 4 miles. Robin Hood's Bay 15 miles. Whitby 17 miles. Sledmere House and the glorious Yorkshire Wolds - the inspiration for David Hockney's recent exhibition "A Bigger Picture" 15-20 miles. Pickering and the North York Moors Steam Railway 17 miles. Ryedale Folk Museum 25 miles. Lovely market town of Helmsley and its beautiful walled garden 30 miles. The historic city of York 40 miles.
Just across the road from the cottage is the Hackness Grange Hotel - for formal dining, bar meals and Sunday lunch. About 1.5 miles along the lane, at Langdale End, is The Moorcock, a truly traditional pub which also serves home cooked food. A firm favourite of ours (and our visitors) is Walkers Fish Restaurant for fantastic fish and chips, incorporating a tea room and wine bar, in East Ayton, about 4 miles away via Forge Valley.
For something really special try The Anvil Inn at nearby Sawdon. The food here is superb - within a traditional looking pub, but with a very contemporary feel inside - plus great selection of wines and local beers.
In nearby East Ayton there is an excellent Spar supermarket with a wide range of fresh and frozen food, groceries, wine, beers, spirits, household items as well as a cash machine Next to Spar is a petrol station and post office. There's a large Morrisons supermarket at Crossgates, a ten minute drive from the cottage, and a brilliant Sainsburys not too far away in Scarborough. Tesco will deliver groceries to the cottage so you can organise your holiday supplies before you leave home.
A little further afield, in Brompton by Sawdon, is Glaves, a fantastic butcher's shop and the home of the best pork pies we've ever tasted. And, don't just take our word for it - foodie writer Tom Parker-Bowles agrees! He travelled 500 miles to sample a Glaves' pork pie - and he wasn't disappointed. If you've never tasted a warm pork pie, straight from the oven, here's your chance.
If you go to York during your holiday be sure to visit Betty's celebrated tea rooms and shops - forget the diet and remember to take home a bag of Fat Rascals, the best fruity, buttery scone/rock cakes you'll ever have the pleasure to eat.
