About the property

Cottage on Portland, Nr. Weymouth, Dorset, England - Rustic Location, 5 Minutes Walk To Chesil Beach And 10 To Sailing Academy, Wifi

'Casita del Mar', as its name suggests is a 'cottage by the sea', situated at the bottom of infamous hilly Mallams and has a four star 'enjoyEngland' grading. The property was built around 150 years ago and has recently been refurbished in a mix of contemporary and vintage style to suit all tastes and always with comfort a priority. There is a courtyard for alfresco dining in summer and wood burning stove in winter. Step outside the front door, look left and you will be greeted with stunning views of the sea. A five minute walk down the hill will bring you to the village of Chiswell, stunning rocky coves and the pebbles of Chesil beach. Have a drink outside the famous 'Cove Inn' and watch the sun go down or a short walk in the opposite direction and have a fish supper (fresh fish caught daily from local fishermen). Casita del mar now has Wifi!

About Susan

I live in Weymouth and became the owner of this Portland stone fisherman's cottage in 2006. In the summer of 2009 it undertook a complete refurbishment and has now been transformed into 'Casita del mar' with it's fusion of vintage and contemporary style to appeal to all tastes! Having garden design and interior design in my background I have recently been the owner of a Vintage clothes shop (this will shortly be turned into an online vintage clothes and interiors website). I have three daughters and two grandchildren!

Susan purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Susan chose Portland

I live in Weymouth (7 miles from Portland) and when the opportunity came up for me to acquire another property I looked first in Weymouth but was uninspired.

When it came to looking on Portland I fell in love with the charm of the fisherman's cottages and in 2009 I began the transformation of 49 Mallams into 'Casita del mar' a holiday home. Throughout this transformation I had, what I would want, in mind. I wanted 'Casita del mar' to have a homely feel, a place I would like to spend time in. Portland is very rustic and somewhat remote from the hustle and bustle of Weymouth, the nearest town. I love the quirkiness of the property and that I can stand outside the front door, look left and see the ever changing look and colour of the sea.

What makes this cottage unique

'Casita del mar' is full of charm, vintage touches everywhere mixed with the contemporary and with comfort a priority. Winter or summer there is a 'Casita del mar' Portland experience for everyone. Hot summer days and alfresco dining - stormy seas and a log burning stove in winter.

There is some parking in the road and a free carpark a three minute walk away. It is well served with bus routes to Portland Bill and Weymouth and a local taxi service.

Please be aware not to park in front of other people's driveways. They are not happy when this happens as they are not able to get their cars out. They contact me immediatly! There is a reminder note to this effect in the cottage also.

You can bring your pet, £15 extra per pet. It is vitally important they do not go upstairs. Please use the stair gate provided. Thank you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have had a wonderful time. Susan was so helpful. The location perfect and the cottage became our own cosy home away from home. Lovely!!

Notes on accommodation: The cottage is suitable for children of all ages but children under 5 should be supervised as there are some steep stairs leading to the top bedroom. There is one step down, from the front door, into the living room and two small steps up to dining room, then one step up into kitchen. Therefore the property may not be suitable for people with mobility problems. If mobility is not a problem then these extra steps all add to the charm of the cottage. Initial basket of logs provided in winter. All other utility bills included in the price of the cottage. There is no smoking in the property. One small well behaved pet welcome during off peak periods at an additional cost of £15 per week. Outside: There is a secluded courtyard and terrace for alfresco dining for six. Barbecue in summer, woodburner in winter. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All Bed Linen and Towels are included in the price. Please do not use towels for the beach.

Clean, comfy and well managed. Small but pretty in an extraordinary place.

For people who don't know Portland it is very hard to describe the mixture of eccentricity, roughness and outstanding natural beauty that characterises it. As someone who has roots in the area it held no surprises for me but other members of my party were suitably amazed by the area. This cottage is an ideal location for exploring the region. It's small but very warm and comfortable, and so many of those issues about cottages (electricity costs, for example) simply are not an issue here. As an old labourer's cottage it is small but very well renovated, as long as tall people rememebr to duck as they move about! The view from outside the front door is unique: you appear to look directly down onto the sea, because of the steepness of the hill on which the house it built. You are 2 minutes walk from a delightful cafe / restaurant, which should be your regular eating place (at least for breakfast and lunch), there is a very respectable tandoori house even closer and no more than 2 miles away is arguably the most thrilling place in the south of England: Portland Bill. Weymouth, just across Chesil Beach, may be rough and ready but has the best beach for 50 miles, while Abbotsbury and the great swathe of glorious south Dorset country is just a short drive away. There is even a working 15th century castle, and that is rarer than you might think. Honestly, what's not to like? Just remember not to mention rabbits on the island and things will go just fine.

cosy casita

  • 5 of 5

Casita del mar is a really cosy little cottage with everything you could need for a stay whatever the time of year. We were there whilst our kids and two friends were training at the National Sailing Academy nearby at Osprey Quay. The weather was awful or very good (if you are a sailor) but there was always lots of warm water for a good bath and the central heating worked really well. Outside the wind was howling (beaufort 8) but inside it was so quiet with two foot thick walls of portland stone.

Sue the owner helped us in several ways and nothing was too much trouble. Most of the time we ate out at the Cove Inn (reservations recommended) but one night we stayed in and enjoyed an excellent roast courtesy of a well equipped kitchen.

Parking outside was well nigh impossible but we always had plenty of time to load and unload outside casita as not much traffic comes down the road. Parking was in fact very easy and only a couple of minutes down the hill in a FREE !! car park by the beach wall.

We will certainly come again when we need a base for important races at the Academy.

Casita del Mar - Portland

  • 4 of 5

We had a really nice family holiday based at Casita del Mar in Portland. The cottage had lots of charm and is decorated in a vintage style which was loved by all the women in the party. Our party consisted of myself and husband (grandparents), daughter, son in law, 7 week old baby, son and daughter in law so we appreciated the cottage from the point of view of all age groups. All beds were reported as comfortable and the cottage was very well equipped with everything you would need. The only real drawback was the quite steep hill... but even the oldies managed to get up and down there without too much puffing. The car park at the bottom of the hill was very convenient. At the bottom of the hill there is a lovely pub called 'The Cove Inn' overlooking the sea and also an Indian Takeaway. We enjoyed lots of days out using the cottage as a base and as it's only 15 mins drive from Weymouth some nice seaside days too. The men enjoyed going fishing early every morning on the nearby beach. All agreed they would like to return again sometime.

Owner's Response: How lovely, my first Review and a lovely Review it is! Portland basically climbs up and up and a lot of the cottages then run back down to sea level again. These little roads in Fortuneswell are quite steep. I do say on the website Casita del mar is not suitable for anyone with a mobility problem and describe it as being at the bottom of a steep hill, please be aware of this. I am pleased Sue felt this did not distract from their holiday too much. Thank you for taking the time to write a Review for me Sue.
