3 bedroomed village house and 2 bedroomed gite ,with pool - ideal for families, friends and couples

Les Volets Blancs with its attached cottage Les Rosiers, accommodating up to 11 people is an ideal property for large gathering of family or friends who want a well appointed country house for a memorable relaxing holiday with complete privacy. The two can be rented together for at all times ; couples, friends or families who wish to have a quiet French country holiday can rent either the of the two houses separately ,apart from during July and August , and have exclusive use of the pool and garden - the house and the gite are never let to different groups of people at the same time . The rates displayed here refer to the two houses combined. Please enquire for separate rates .

At one time the property was the site of the village bakery . The main house, ``Les Volets Blancs ``,displays some features that the proprietors may have added as trade prospered ,such as marble and stone fireplaces ,steps up to the front door and a discreet Art Deco frieze painted around the base of the exterior.`` Les Rosiers``,the gite ,still retains the original cast iron bread oven , set into the living room wall . ( no longer in use ,unfortunately ,aspiring artisan baker please note -there is a more recent gas oven for everyday catering !).We have tried to retain and enhance character and style whilst making the properties comfortable and easy for our guests . There is a library of cookery books which might be useful to guests who have been inspired by the wonderful produce found locally . The living room of the main house opens onto the terrace and gazebo for outside dining . The front door ,under a glass verandah opens into the hall.The tiled kitchen/dining room with stone fireplace is to the right ;at the end of the hall is the downstairs shower room and the living room is to the left . A wooden staircase in the corner of the living room leads up to the landing with access to two large double rooms ,one with a single and a double bed and also a twin room .The bathroom with bath is at the end of the landing .All rooms look out onto the garden .

``Les Rosiers``, ( the former bakery ) is a two bedroomed cottage attached to the main house . The cottage was renovated in 2006 and now has two bedrooms with connecting bathroom with shower ,living /dining room and a fully equipped kitchen area .The gite still retains an air of rusticity with its tiled floors, beams and polished floorboards .The back door from the kitchen area leads out to a secluded west facing private patio and garden with BBQ, table and chairs ,quite hidden from the main garden .There is also space outside the front to eat and relax within sight of the pool and main garden.

We live in a nearby village and we or a trusted caretaker is always on hand to welcome and help our guests .Please ask about pre- arrival grocery shopping and discounts on ferry crossings .

Notes on accommodation: Towels and linen are supplied and but we do not provide pool and beach towels. Outdoor dining furniture, deckchairs ,sun umbrellas and loungers are provided . Should your arrival be quite late in the day please ask us to buy some basic provisions on your behalf so that you do not need to shop en route or dash out as soon as you arrive ! Outside: Secluded south facing garden , planted with pine ,bay and laurel and bamboo ,with private pool( 8m x 4m), in a quiet farming village surrounded by fields, vineyards and woods.

Good Family Holiday

Very attractive, family friendly house. The property was clean and well-maintained (including the wonderful pool) and worked well for our large family group of 3 generations.

Paul and Annie gave good local information and helpful support. They maintained a personal interest in their house without ever being intrusive.

With such a diverse group we enjoyed beaches, bars, restaurants and heritage activities. All very well described for us.

We would certainly recommend this property.

Great location and Fantastic Welcome

The first thing to say is that the owners attention to detail is fantastic. Everything you could think of was provided even down to those things like dishwasher tablets which you usually have to go out and buy. The house is very clean with English satellite TV and great Wi-Fi (even the kids said how good it was) which made a big difference to all. The games room was a welcome addition and there was no shortage of space to store cold drinks. Would have no hesitation is recommending. Paul and Annie were great hosts and helped out with local knowledge.

The property was set in a lovely little village, close to amenities. I especially liked the owners collection of cookery books, well stocked kitchen and overall comfort the house provided. When we arrived the hosts greeted us and gave a full explanation of how everything worked including recommendations of where to eat & interesting places to visit. The owners lived nearby and were extremely helpful & even invited us to their house for a cup of tea. We invited friends from Australia to join us, this allows them independence as gite attached to house is well set up and as next door to the main house allows occupants their own space and choice of joining us as well. We visited La Rochelle, port nearby as well as local chateau & vineyard. I would recommend this property as a destination

Charming property and very homely

Les Volets Blancs was ideal for our extended family. Both properties have lots of charm and are very well equipped. For example, it was nice to find a well-stocked herb rack, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets etc on arrival.

There's plenty to do on site with the swimming pool, table tennis and boules. The local area is lovely and perfect for cycling. There are plenty of attractions within an hour's drive so a car is essential. Communication was very good before and after the trip with the owners (thanks Paul and Annie). Highly recommended!

Superb House, superb location

We stayed at Les Volets Blanc for a first all family holiday. Paul and Annie were fantastic hosts, even shopping for essentials on the first evening for us. All bedrooms were well decorated with more than enough hanging space. Although a few of our company were not used to such soft beds. The BBQ was used most nights and the pool although not massive was great for the kids and adults to enjoy games and a dip. The houses themselves were tastefully decorated and had a certain amount of Gallic charm. I don't think we spent much time at all inside as the outside space accommodated us all exceptionally well.

This is such a peaceful location even though you are in the middle of a small hamlet. You could almost feel totally secluded. There are local markets in nearby villages and you do need a car as you are so isolated. Some of our party visited Cognac, only 30 minutes away. We spent 2 days at the beach about 45 minutes away.

Great for family get togethers or for those looking for a quiet relaxing break around a pool with good cooking facilities, BBQ and outdoor dining area.

The nearest beaches are on the coast south of La Rochelle ,including Chatellailon Plage, Fouras, Royan and the dunes and beaches on the ILe D`Oleron. Both Royan and Fouras are about a 45 minutes drive way.


Our village is easily accessible from three local airports -La Rochelle and Poitiers are about an 1 hour`s drive ; Bordeaux is about an 1 1/2 hours away. The Western Channel ports of Caen ,Cherbourg and St. Malo are 5- 6 hours drive; Calais is about an 8 hour drive.


Near Aulnay and St. Jean D'Angely for restaurants, bars, markets and leisure activities.Aulnay is a very pretty town 6 miles away ;as well an Intermarche and Coop for everyday shopping there is a very colourful Sunday market .The larger town of St. Jean D`Angely is 10 miles and has markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Markets: all the local produce markets are a feast for the eye and a temptation for the palate. There is a small market in the square in Aulnay on Thursday morning and a larger one on Sunday mornings until 1.00 p.m. The adjacent bars are handy for a café noir, cognac and croissant. You could have a similar morning out in St.Jean where the market is held in and around a large market hall on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.There is a small market in Matha every Friday and a larger street market on the first Friday of every month – it might be possible to breakfast on fresh eels , cooked in garlic,butter and parsley .

The town of Cognac is well worth visiting for its daily produce market alone; apart from Monday it is open every morning until 1.00p.m., leaving the afternoon free to explore the Cognac houses of Hennessy, Martell etc and wandering around the streets of the old town.

Mell ,on the road to Poitiers has a splendid wrought iron market hall in is a lively market every Friday The town itself is worth a visit ; interesting walks around the old streets in the centre ; a great pizzeria just across from the market ( small is adequate ,medium is large and large is huge ) and a good cafe bar on the main street ,a hangout for local hipsters . Bars and Restaurants: the nearest bar is in Paille On weekdays they serve a prix fixe lunch, vin compris , for c.12 euros; there may be no choice and service is at 12.30 but you could ,for example just have the starter and cheese or pudding and skip the main course. There is a very pleasant bar in Nere, Bistro St.Pierre ,(05 46 33 08 39) ,which also does a prix fixe lunch and dinner from a menu including salads, steaks and some fish.It is located on the corner of the village green opposite the church and is decorated in a gallic `shabby chic ` style. Michelle and Russell who own it have made it popular amongst both the French and English locals.Both are closed on Tuesdays.

In St.Jean there is a smart restaurant near the Abbaye called ‘Le Scorlion’ ,( 05 46 32 52 61 ; 5, Rue de L`Abbaye ). Their 17 euro menu is very good value for something slightly more upmarket than an everyday bistro. On the banks of the fishing lake ,on the way to the Atlantys swimming is a cafe ready to feed the hungry punters who have just hired a pedalo or done a round of crazy golf. (Summer only ).There are many other bars and restaurants in the centre of the town around the market area including a Chinese and Indian restaurant. Le Jacobin in Rue des Jacobins , round the corner from the market square, is great for hearty pizzas ,cooked in a wood fired oven ,and other Italian dishes .

The ``Royal Asia`Chinese/Vietnamese buffet restaurant just round the corner from Leclerc supermarket ( down past the supermarket petrol station and it is on the left ).The buffet offers all manner of hot and cold dishes ( steaks and stir fries cooked to order) for c.12 euros at lunch and 18 euros in the evening ( plenty of ice cream and other puddings ) –ideal for an informal lunch or supper with the kids .

Around the square in Aulnay are two bars and a restaurant, Le Colombier,( 05 46 33 31 42 ), and the hotel on the corner of the square, Le Donjon, has a pretty enclosed garden where you can have coffee,tea, wine and beer.

In the village of Chagnon , just off the road to Saintes on the other side of Varaize, is a charming restaurant /gallery ,Le Chene Vert , (05 46 33 04 22 ).

Sea, sand and lunch can be found on the front at Chatelaillon Plage. This resort has a very good sandy beach and several bistros on the boardwalk overlooking the bay .If you drive towards Rochefort via St.Jean and up the small section of motorway along the coast you could get there in about 45 mins.Fouras,just down the coast has seaside charm and many places for lunch .

Saintes has numerous small restaurants in the streets surrounding the cathedral in the centre, most of which offer a prix fixe lunch for c.12-15 .

Local Wine : There is a producer of local wine, Eric Cartaud, whose vineyards are nearby and his press, vats and distillery is in the nearby village of Courpeteau.
