About Marie & Lorenzo

Marie and Lorenzo moved to Tuscany in 1993. Lorenzo is originally from Turin in the North of Italy and Marie is from Leamington Spa in the UK. We met in England where Lorenzo was studying English in 1998 and we were married in Italy on Lake Orta in the year 2000. We lived in a small village on the lake for 3 years before moving to the beautiful region of Tuscany.

We bought Casa Colomba in 2006 and slowly and lovingly began its restoration. By 2010 we were able to open our home to guests and share with them the delights of this region.

By 2014 and by complete accident - or should we call it fate - we became fully fledged property managers offering characteristic vacation homes in our small town.

We now manage 10 properties including our own and despite becoming property managers we still have day jobs for now at least! Lorenzo works in hospitality and customer service in a small family run hotel and Marie works part-time as an airline stewardess for a British airline.

Marie & Lorenzo purchased this apartment in 2006

Why Marie & Lorenzo chose Valdarno Inferiore

We bought Casa Colomba after searching for a property for more than a year and after seeing more than 40 properties.

Casa Colomba was not the type of property we were looking for as we had something a little smaller in mind!

At the time we were renting a small apartment in a village within the district of Vicopisano but we were desperate to buy our own property.

We both loved the village of Vicopisano and often walked around the historic centre wondering what lay behind the crumbling facades and huge wooden doors.

At the time there was not much on the market but friends had told us about a newly renovated property in the village so off we went to have a look at the outside.

The property looked good but it looked much bigger than what we were looking for - however we spotted a 'For Sale' sign in the window of another nearby property which looked like an apartment on the first floor.

We made an appointment with the owner and couldn't believe what we'd stumbled across. The owners produced a huge iron key and unlocked two giant wooden doors on the ground floor.

Inside there was nothing but exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings, earth on the floor and the calling for a lot of work!

Before we had even seen the rest of the house we were hooked by the romanticism of it all especially when we discovered that the property included a 12th Century residential tower.

What we thought was going to be an apartment turned out to be a 3-storey house with a garden full of original features and way beyond our budget and the rest is history!

With one floor completed and two more to go, Casa Colomba is a labour of love and a project for life.

We named the house Casa Colomba as Colomba was the name of Marie's grandmother with whom she grew up as well as being a girl's name Colomba also means 'Dove' in Italian.

What makes this apartment unique

We fell in love with Casa Colomba because of its sense of history, original features and its location.

All the rooms have beamed ceilings and we have either restored or replaced the hand made terracotta pavement tiles.

The 12th Century tower is unique and although the tower is not obvious when you first walk into the house it is very evident from the rear of the property.

It is amazing to think that the tower would have had another two floors during its heyday in the Middle Ages but due to the fortification of the village by the Renaissance engineer Fillipo Brunelleschi the residential towers of Vicopisano were cut down in size in order to spot the enemy should he arrive.

To have the garden is a bonus and a luxury in a Medieval historic centre. The garden is South West facing and is a complete suntrap with beautiful views over the hills and Medieval towers.

The other unique benefit is the location. In the historic centre we are just a short walk to all the village amenities but also 100 metres in the other direction we are in the heart of the countryside surrounded by pine-covered hills and sunflower fields in the summer. There are plenty of walking and cycling trails for all levels of fitness and abilities.

Finally we love the location of Vicopisano because apart from the countryside we also love the sea and in just 30 minutes we can escape the heat of the summer sun at the beach or head for the higher hills in the more remote villages.

Another unique benefit is that we live in an authentic working Tuscan small town not yet discovered by mass tourism but close enough to visit the cities of Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Volterra and Pisa's wine region.

Guestbook comments from the manager

The apartment is beautifully furnished, the bathroom is modern & ultra clean, the bed-linens lovely and the kitchen has everything you need if you wish to cook. Marie added extra touches like candles and a treat basket that made us feel more like welcome guests than customers. The people in the village were very friendly. We had had a great time and hope to visit again in the future.

Truly a memorable experience!!!!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary on this trip and our decision to spend most of our time in Italy at this location was absolutely fantastic. Both Marie and Lorenzo made you feel very special right at the very first encounter. Marie and Lorenzo provided us with an abundance of information, tips, suggestions, recommendations for our stay before and during our time there. The location of Vicopisano was perfect. We wanted a true authentic Tuscany location and this met all of our expectations. The apartment was beautifully decorated and most all of the stones and bricks were from the medieval times. Wow! It was located 2 stories up and while it gives you a workout going up the stairs, you get used to it. The only thing that we wished it had was air conditioning because it can get warm during the summer. But I was told by Marie that they are working on getting an AC unit installed soon, so when this happens, it will be absolutely perfect. Until then, you do have fans in the apartment.

Now as for the excursions, we did the personalized wine tour that they offered and we were so impressed! Just the ride out into the Tuscany country side was awesome..absolutely stunning views and was just like we imagined it. We went to 2 family wineries and they were so inviting and nice. We had personalized tours and wine tastings and the wine was incredible! Very organic wines. We then experienced a tour of Andrea Bocelli's home town and lunch in the village. Fantastic. Later in the week we went to a real Olive farm that produces the best olive oil you will ever taste. We also got to see Kiwi trees, a full tour of the farm and how olive oil is made. Plus you get a delicious tasting along with wine. We bought several items to take back with us.

Our location was so convenient in that you can easily make day trips to the coast or visit other cities like Pisa and Lucca. Highly recommended! And the overall costs for food, wine, etc is so much more affordable than in Florence.

We can't tell you how much we enjoyed this trip! The sights, sounds, tastes and overall true "memorable experience" is what you are going to get with this rental. Marie and Lorenzo really know what their guests like and appreciate and a huge thank you for their hospitality and genuine personalities.

You are not just getting a beautiful Tuscany rental, you are getting wonderful memories. Bene Gratzie, Marie and Lorenzo!!!!!!!!!!

Fantastic stay

  • 5 of 5

I don't need to ramble on - we just know that we had lovely time - Casa Colomba was perfect, in a perfect location, amongst lovely people. Marie and Lorenzo could not have been better hosts, they helped and advised us and nothing was too much trouble - a big thank you to you both.

There was only really one downside - the holiday was just not long enough!

Beautiful property in quaint village

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent six days with Marie and Lorenzo at Casa Colomba. It was everything we dreamt of in a vacation. I found the apartment on home away website last summer and looked at it often until we decided when to take our vacation. The apartment was perfect, just as we imagined it.

Marie and Lorenzo were very helpful with any questions we had. They were the perfect hosts. Marie took us on a wine tasting one evening. We had so much fun!!! The village was so cute with everything you could need. It was a perfect place to spend some time exploring and learning the history of the area. All the shop owners were very nice and every restaurant that we tried was very good.

We plan on returning to Italy one day and wouldn't imagine staying anywhere but at Casa Colomba.

I would highly recommend the apartment to anyone wanting to experience the true Italian countryside. You could never ask for better hosts than Marie and Lorenzo. Thank you very much for the fun and relaxation we needed. Hope to see you in the future.

Christmas in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa Colomba for four nights over the Christmas holiday. It was the perfect location for day trips. We chose Pisa, Lucca, Florence and Chianti. The apartment was a great place to settle in for the evening. It was nicely furnished and full of charm and nice little details, such as welcome snacks, and guide books to help you plan your stay. Marie and Lorenzo (who are wonderful people) have put a lot of care into making sure theirs guests feel at home and have what they need to enjoy the area. I would recommend that you have a car if you stay here (and there is a very convenient free parking area close by). Also please make sure that you are comfortable on stairs, as they are narrow and steep, so you want to be sure-footed.

Cosy apartment in rural Tuscan village

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I stayed in Casa Colomba for a week and thoroughly enjoyed it. Marie and Lorenzo arranged for a taxi from Pisa ( 15 minutes away) . The apartment was located in the centre of this small village of Vicopisano. It is quintessential Tuscany with narrow lanes, old stone houses with a central piazza containing various shops. The apartment is a restored old building with stone walls. It has all that you need- a large kitchen and living room. There is a lounging room open to the fresh air for relaxing. Marie and Lorenzo were very helpful at reviewing the places to visit.

The town is small but has a few restaurants to dine and a grocery store to pick up breakfast and antipasti. There is a large castle fort that is the towns focal point. It is well worth the visit and tour.

We travelled by bus to the train station in Pontedera( 15 minute ride) . From there, the train system efficiently takes you to other larger cities such as Pisa and Florence.

We learned some Italian phrases that allowed us to communicate with the locals.

Overall, it was a pleasure to stay at Marie and Lorenzo's apartment. It is a great base for seeing Tuscany!
