About the Manager

Marie and Lorenzo moved to Tuscany in 1993. Lorenzo is originally from Turin in the North of Italy and Marie is from Leamington Spa in the UK. We met in England where Lorenzo was studying English in 1998 and we were married in Italy on Lake Orta in the year 2000. We lived in a small village on the lake for 3 years before moving to the beautiful region of Tuscany.

We bought Casa Colomba in 2006 and slowly and lovingly began its restoration. By 2010 we were able to open our home to guests and share with them the delights of this region.

By 2014 and by complete accident - or should we call it fate - we became fully fledged property managers offering characteristic vacation homes in our small town.

We now manage 10 properties including our own and despite becoming property managers we still have day jobs for now at least! Lorenzo works in hospitality and customer service in a small family run hotel and Marie works part-time as an airline stewardess for a British airline.

Guestbook comments from the manager

The apartment is beautifully furnished, the bathroom is modern & ultra clean, the bed-linens lovely and the kitchen has everything you need if you wish to cook. Marie added extra touches like candles and a treat basket that made us feel more like welcome guests than customers. The people in the village were very friendly. We had had a great time and hope to visit again in the future.

Cosy apartment in rural Tuscan village

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I stayed in Casa Colomba for a week and thoroughly enjoyed it. Marie and Lorenzo arranged for a taxi from Pisa ( 15 minutes away) . The apartment was located in the centre of this small village of Vicopisano. It is quintessential Tuscany with narrow lanes, old stone houses with a central piazza containing various shops. The apartment is a restored old building with stone walls. It has all that you need- a large kitchen and living room. There is a lounging room open to the fresh air for relaxing. Marie and Lorenzo were very helpful at reviewing the places to visit.

The town is small but has a few restaurants to dine and a grocery store to pick up breakfast and antipasti. There is a large castle fort that is the towns focal point. It is well worth the visit and tour.

We travelled by bus to the train station in Pontedera( 15 minute ride) . From there, the train system efficiently takes you to other larger cities such as Pisa and Florence.

We learned some Italian phrases that allowed us to communicate with the locals.

Overall, it was a pleasure to stay at Marie and Lorenzo's apartment. It is a great base for seeing Tuscany!

Characterful apartment in charming Tuscan village

  • 5 of 5

Marie and Lorenzo welcomed us warmly to this charming apartment in the historic village of Vicopisano, 20 mins from Pisa. They were extremely helpful throughout the booking process and during our stay, providing exactly the right level of attentiveness. The tastefully renovated apartment is full of character, with ancient, medieval walls, and we also enjoyed relaxing in the loggia and garden (accessed round the corner).

The information provided is comprehensive and excellent, with ample recommendations of activities, restaurants, shops, markets etc. We particularly enjoyed exploring the maze of cobbled alleyways in Vicopisano, a visit to the olive farm, trips to the seaside at Marina di Pisa, days in Pisa and Lucca, where we cycled round the city walls, and a trip to the aquarium in Livorno, which our boys loved. They also enjoyed the board games provided in the apartment.

Marie and Lorenzo were so warm and friendly and we felt like honorary Vicopisanians - the locals were so welcoming and friendly.

An excellent base for exploring Tuscany and relaxing in the village itself.

Grazie mille!

Truly a home away for home

  • 4 of 5

This property exceeded our expectations. We felt right at home the minute we arrived with Marie and Lorenzo warmly greeting us, advising us on recommended restaurants, beaches, day trips and activities. The apartment itself was perfect, very comfortable, tastefully decorated and clean, and every little detail you could think of was there, and more. Marie and Lorenzo took us on a special wine tasting tour which was probably our favorite day of our entire vacation. We went to the beach they recommended and it was so relaxing we went back a second day! We also toured with David in Pisa and were very impressed with his knowledge of the history of the city! Our favorite restaurant was la Divina Commedia del Gusto but also loved Osteria de Ceppato.

Thank you Marie and Lorenzo for your warm welcome and showing us your beautiful region, and we hope to be back to see you again soon...

Top Quality

  • 5 of 5

This was our favourite accomodation, by far, during our recent trip to Italy. Exquisitely remodeled property with top quality amenities. Having seen the stunning photos of Casa Colomba online prior to booking, we were very much looking forward to our stay. The property met and even exceeded our expectations . Our friendly hosts communicated helpful and thorough information about the property, town and surrounding areas prior to and during our stay. Vicopisano allowed us to spend a few days away from the more touristy areas which we truly enjoyed. A major highlight was spotting fireflies while enjoying a bottle of wine in the garden late one evening. Will be etched in my mind forever! Bravo Marie and Lorenzo for creating such a beautiful and welcoming vacation property. Have already recommended the property to friends who have future travel plans in Italy. Bernadette and Denis

Location

From the Owner

We bought Casa Colomba after searching for a property for more than a year and after seeing more than 40 properties. Casa Colomba was not the type of property we were looking for as we had something a little smaller in mind! At the time we were renting a small apartment in a village within the district of Vicopisano but we were desperate to buy our own property. We both loved the village of Vicopisano and often walked around the historic centre wondering what lay behind the crumbling facades and huge wooden doors. At the time there was not much on the market but friends had told us about a newly renovated property in the village so off we went to have a look at the outside. The property looked good but it looked much bigger than what we were looking for - however we spotted a 'For Sale' sign in the window of another nearby property which looked like an apartment on the first floor. We made an appointment with the owner and couldn't believe what we'd stumbled across. The owners produced a huge iron key and unlocked two giant wooden doors on the ground floor. Inside there was nothing but exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings, earth on the floor and the calling for a lot of work! Before we had even seen the rest of the house we were hooked by the romanticism of it all especially when we discovered that the property included a 12th Century residential tower. What we thought was going to be an apartment turned out to be a 3-storey house with a garden full of original features and way beyond our budget and the rest is history! With one floor completed and two more to go, Casa Colomba is a labour of love and a project for life. We named the house Casa Colomba as Colomba was the name of Marie's grandmother with whom she grew up as well as being a girl's name Colomba also means 'Dove' in Italian.

Facilities

From the Owner

We fell in love with Casa Colomba because of its sense of history, original features and its location. All the rooms have beamed ceilings and we have either restored or replaced the hand made terracotta pavement tiles. The 12th Century tower is unique and although the tower is not obvious when you first walk into the house it is very evident from the rear of the property. It is amazing to think that the tower would have had another two floors during its heyday in the Middle Ages but due to the fortification of the village by the Renaissance engineer Fillipo Brunelleschi the residential towers of Vicopisano were cut down in size in order to spot the enemy should he arrive. To have the garden is a bonus and a luxury in a Medieval historic centre. The garden is South West facing and is a complete suntrap with beautiful views over the hills and Medieval towers. The other unique benefit is the location. In the historic centre we are just a short walk to all the village amenities but also 100 metres in the other direction we are in the heart of the countryside surrounded by pine-covered hills and sunflower fields in the summer. There are plenty of walking and cycling trails for all levels of fitness and abilities. Finally we love the location of Vicopisano because apart from the countryside we also love the sea and in just 30 minutes we can escape the heat of the summer sun at the beach or head for the higher hills in the more remote villages. Another unique benefit is that we live in an authentic working Tuscan small town not yet discovered by mass tourism but close enough to visit the cities of Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Volterra and Pisa's wine region.
