Old Stone Farmhouse near Roquecor

Bedrooms 3
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

Farmhouse in Ferrussac, Tarn et Garonne, Midi Pyrenees, France - Beautiful Farmhouse in Secluded Hamlet, Private Swimming Pool and Fabulous Views

Le Pouch is the name of the hamlet as the house itself doesn't have a name although it is referred to by locals as La Maison de la Grandmere as the local matriach used to live there. Part of the hamlet is still a working farm and chickens may walk across the garden. The area is known for its prunes and the sitting room still has the remains of an old prune oven and the original terracotta floor. The walls are very thick which means the house is cool in the heat of the summer. The house has lovely old features such as the stone staircase and old stone sinks in the bedrooms. The upstairs rooms are light and airy with views over the garden and sweeping out into the countryside. You are welcome to bring your dogs with you but do remember those free range chickens. Le Pouch is definitely a family house with doors being left open and much of life is spent outside, eating, swimming, snoozing in the garden. We hope you love it as much as we do.

About Zena Marchington

I am a language teacher and Ian is a marketing person but we both have a life-long love of France and it was definitely a shared dream to go and live in France for a couple of years. The children were 5 & 7 when we arrived - perfect for lang learning - and ended up fluent at the end of the 2 years with fabulous local accents that make my Parisian cousins hoot with laughter. Ian's French went from vitually zero to expert in certain areas - food of course, plus he can probably name every item in the local builders' yard. We now live back in the UK but part of all of us is over there and itching to get back.

Zena Marchington purchased this farmhouse in 2002

Why Zena Marchington chose Tarn-et-Garonne

We bought Le Pouch knowing virtually nothing about the area but now can't believe our luck. It's the orchard of France, famed for Agen prunes but full of fields of cherry, apple, apricot and pear trees as well. The area was also important during the 100 years war and features many fortified hill-top towns known as Bastides which have remained virtually unchanged since medieval times with narrow cobbled streets, cloistered market squares with regluar markets with local produce. I feel at my most French with a basket of tomatoes, saucisson, walnut tarts etc in one hand and a tray of peaches balanced on my hip. When we first arrived at Le Pouch there was one cold tap and no loo & Ian has lovingly restored the house. It is comfortable and welcoming but not chic - no frilly curtains here!

What makes this farmhouse unique

One of the lovely things about Le Pouch is it's remoteness. If you like birds you are in for a treat - lots of birds of prey, a resident hoopoe and swallows who dive-bomb the pool. The night sky is fabulous. If you lie down on the grass at night & look up you will see millions of stars & often shooting stars. Ian & I also both adore cooking and you will find a very well stocked kitchen (we even have an ice-cream maker). You can pick fruit from the orchard (apricots, cherries, greengages) and make your own jam to go with those croissants!

Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The 5 of us (3 teenagers and their paymasters) had a great week at this delightful house in mid summer.

Despite the inevitable sunshine there's plenty of cool shade, especially under the trees between the house and the pool.

The pool is of course the perfect way to cool off and have some fun; it's just the right size and depth to enjoy.

We did a bit of touring whilst there to several of the nearby old hill-top villages - really interesting on market days to get some local produce and do some people watching!

Overall a great house, well-furnished and stylish, with plenty to do; a chance to improve one's table tennis as well as swimming.

Le Pouch

  • 5 of 5

Le Pouch nestles in a beautiful hamlet and working farm. Enjoying the architecture is an essential part of the holiday. You feel like time has stood still for many years. It feels old and blissfully isolated and yet modern amenities are only a few minutes drive away. The owners have sensitively located the swimming pool behind the orchard, in order to provide this luxury, without spoiling the timeless feel of the house. Sitting outside, in front of the superb façade of the house is an absolute joy, for breakfast, lunch or dinner and a perfect place to play boules or table tennis for the more energetic.

Second stay at Le Pouch

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Le Pouch and we will be back. Great location for exploring rural France with local towns, villages and bastides. Sunflowers are amazing in the surrounding fields. The cottage is part of a farmhouse and we were left to our own devices and had a great time on both of our holidays. The pool is about 30 metres from the house itself and the kids and the rest of the family had a great time there during the day and in the evening the kitchen was the hub before the meal al fresco each evening. Table tennis and a good set of DVDs ensured the kids were never bored when they'd had enough of the pool. Great cottage, typical French stonework. Recommend!!!

Peace. Perfect peace.

  • 5 of 5

Le Pouch is in unspoiled countryside surrounded by fields of sunflowers in the summer. It's owners have retained the rustic feel of the farmhouse while adding essential modern amenities and comforts. We were a group of 3 generations all of whom found the space to enjoy and relax in this wonderfully unpretentious home and it's grounds (that include a great swimming pool). I would thoroughly recommend to those who want to get away from it all. Peace. Perfect peace.

Le Pouch

  • 5 of 5

This house fulfilled all our expectations and more. Full of charm and very peaceful. Lots of fun around the pool and some epic games of table tennis. When we were there the property was surrounded by fields of sunflowers. The house is really comfortable with a great kitchen for cooking up a feast. Lovely furnishings add to the character of this old farm house.

Pretty much a different market for each day of the week in many of the beautiful local villages. Swimming lakes, scenic walks, bastide towns, canoeing on the River Lot, local wines, all a short drive away. Although we barely left the house in our second week except to get our morning croissants.

We loved it and can't wait to go back.
