About the property

Cottage near Surgeres, Charente Maritime, France

Originally home to the caretaker of the chateau, Logis de la Prise has been completely renovated to a very high standard yet still retains the period charm of a rural French cottage. The cottage has 2 bedrooms, the first of which is situated in the eaves of the building with a king size bed, ensuite shower room and views to the west over the surrounding countryside and woodland. The second bedroom with double bed is located on the ground floor overlooking our pretty formal garden. Also on the ground floor is the modern family bathroom with its luxurious walk in drencher shower and separate bath. The remainder of the ground floor has been completely opened up and windows on three sides ensure a beautifully light and spacious living area with a fully equipped quality kitchen. An original fireplace with log burner surrounded by comfortable seating completes the picture. The Logis also benefits from its own outside space, including a south facing seating area and a private garden with terrace.

About Seb or Lucy Hepplewhite

La Prise has been in our family for almost 12 years now, prior to our arrival it served as a holiday home and we spent many months here gradually restoring the house and its grounds to their former glory. In 2009, Lucy and I finally decided to take the plunge and quit our jobs in finance in the UK to move to La Prise permanently, allowing us to set up our own business and better maintain the house and grounds. We see ourselves as care-takers in many ways, helping this historic property to remain the local landmark it has become over the centuries. In 2010 we purchased the neighbouring land and buildings which originally served as the farm to the chateau, providing milk, vegetables, beef and lamb to the then very affluent residents! A working farm no longer, it offered us the opportunity to expand our business with a second holiday rental (ref 8106339), and to repatriate part of the La Prise heritage. Our aim has always been to provide charming, luxury and private self catering accommodation for guests, providing them with a great place to stay whilst they explore everything this region has to offer.

What makes this cottage unique

Our greatest asset is our situation. We are rural, but only a short drive to our local boulangerie, market, bars and restaurants. We benefit from access to all the amenities but also have the absolute peace and tranquility provided by the french countryside. La Prise sits on 7 acres of land, comprised of a lovely formal garden with gravel paths and lines of yew cones, a large woodland great for wildlife, a long sweeping driveway, a walled garden and lots of original features such as our pigeonnier, gatehouse and orangerie. With our own additions of a full size croquet lawn, young orchard, rose garden and lots of other planting it is a wonderful place to spend the summer.

We are also very fortunate to offer our guests complete privacy as, unlike many other holiday properties, the Logis is totally separate from the main house with its own driveway, garden and parking, all of which have been designed to ensure you are truly able to 'get away from it all' without the worry of neighbours or other guests. That said, we are based in the château so on site and here to help if you need us.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Unquestionably the best gite we have stayed in, from their warm welcome and small basket of goodies to their attentive advice, Lucy and Seb are great hosts. The cottage itself is spacious, clean and very comfortable with the best range of kitchen equipment we have ever seen in a gite. Thank you both for such an excellent week."

"Thank you for a simply wonderful stay, it has been fabulous! The gite is exceptional - beautifully furnished and a relaxing and homely environment. Very picturesque surroundings and the most welcoming and helpful hosts. Overall, a lovely week, thank you again!"

"We have had a wonderful week, thank you. The gite has been very well restored and decorated and we think you have thought of everything! This has made it very easy to cater for young children also. It is great to be so private and away from all the hustle and bustle, whilst not being too far away from the coast and summer entertainment."

"We've had a lovely week in a really beautiful place."

An excellent home from home

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week in August 2015 staying in Logis De la Prise. A clean, modern, comfortable/luxury gite that is full of French character within beautiful, peaceful surroundings. The property is approximately a 40 minute drive to the nearest beach, with La Rochelle centre approx 45 mins away. Would recommend this property, hence the 5 stars - we hope to return again soon.

Fantastic !

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely fantastic time at the Logis de La Prise - Lucy and Seb were extremely warm, helpful and welcoming after a rather iffy experience in another gite for the first week of our holiday. The Logis exceeded our expectations, Lucy & Seb's attention to detail is astounding - the photographs really don't do the quality of the fixtures and fittings justice. The Logis was spotless and the grounds immaculate. We couldn't really imagine a better place for peace & relaxation. The location was a perfect centre for our holiday - Charente-Maritime and Deux-Sevres are fantastic areas with a collection of lovely towns, quaint villages and numerous attractions - even our three month old Jessica loved it, especially the Zoo at La Palmyre where she fed popcorn to elephants and hippos! We will definitely be back - again our heartfelt thanks go to Lucy & Seb from Catherine, Alan & Jessica x

Beautiful property in a tranquil location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week with our 5 and 1 year old children. The Logis is beautiful, very well equipped (inclduing for baby) and well maintained. The grounds are stunning, good for sitting quietly with a book but also exciting for the chidlren to explore, especially the woodland path. The tennis court and croquet lawn also provided good entertainment for adults and children alike. You need a car to get around, but a short drive away are some lovely towns and seaside. La Rochelle was fun on market day, and the Aquarium was a great rainy day activity. The information pack that Lucy & Seb provide is very helpful and the welcome pack was a lovely touch. We would definitely go back there.

A tranquil and well equipped haven.

  • 5 of 5

The owners welcomed us at the end of the drive and introduced us to the place with which we fell instantly in love. At the first glimpse, we thought the property and grounds were beautiful (and the well-stocked hamper and wine was an lovely added bonus after our trek from Calais). The cottage was spotless, furnished in a neat, modern farmhouse style and was equipped with everything we needed - including excellent satellite TV reception which was marvellous for Wimbledon fortnight although we did spend far more time outdoors. The gravelled terrace is south facing so catches the sun for most of the day and the trees in front of the entrance provide some welcome shade for dining later in the day. Bicycles would have been a great idea (with hindsight) as there are plenty of quiet rural roads running through fields of sunflowers (in bloom in early July when we were there) and a couple of villages are within easy cycling reach and have a smattering of bars and restaurants. In the event, we drove everywhere and all the essentials, as well as a few luxuries, can be found at the local supermarket in Beauvoir which is only a few minutes away. Driving further afield, we loved Poitiers, Niort, Cognac, Surgeres (for the market on Saturday) and Coulon with its riverside restaurants. We would definitely recommend Logis de la Prise as a perfect location for battery recharging. We hope to be there again soon!

Outstanding, property set in beautiful gardens

  • 5 of 5

This property is by far the best we have stayed in. On arrival we were made very welcome by Lucy and Seb. The gite is furnished to a very high standard which includes bedding and plenty of soft towels. To make us feel even more welcome a hamper had been left for us which included bread, butter, cheese, milk and a very welcome bottle of wine thank you Lucy and Seb. The gardens are magnificent and lovely to enjoy they are maintained to a very high standard by Lucy and Seb. This is such a lovely part of France the coast is an hour away and the port of La Rochelle well worth a visit, also the many villages inland.

We cannot praise this property it was absolutely perfect, we will return to enjoy another holiday in such an outstanding peaceful gite. Thank you Lucy and Seb

Vraiment Fantastique!

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent an idyllic week staying in Logis de la Prise. It is everything that is described on the website and more! Set amidst stunning gardens in the grounds of the lovely main house, although also having its own private terraces, this is a real slice of paradise in the French countryside. Providing total peace and tranquility and yet less than ten minutes from local amenities, it offers the best of both worlds. The accommodation, including lovely bathrooms (brilliant showers!), a fantastic kitchen/dining/living room and lovely master bedroom, is superb. (Even a laundry room!) Beautifully furnished, extremely comfortable and very well-equipped, everything has been provided to ensure a wonderful stay. Thoughtful additional touches, such as fresh flowers in various rooms, as well as the welcome hamper of local goodies, were also very much appreciated. We felt as if we were actually living in a French house, rather than just staying in a holiday cottage!

Ideally located for visiting the beautiful coastal resorts such as Royan, La Rochelle and Île de Ré, Talmont sur Gironde - an exquisite craft village with cobbled streets and stunning views - is also reachable. The gorgeous villages and waterways of the Marais Poitevin are also less than half an hour away. Coulon, with its waterside restaurants, is simply beautiful.

Lucy and Seb, you are the perfect hosts – extremely helpful, warm and welcoming. We felt comfortable from the moment we arrived. Thank you both so much for providing such fabulous accommodation. It was a pleasure and a privilege to stay in your beautiful property. It was a real wrench to tear ourselves away. We really hope to return, but for longer! Merci encore une fois. Amicalement, Margaret & Alan
