Former Coaching Inn in Licques, Pas de Calais - Large 18th Century Coaching Inn In A Quiet Village

The Coaching Inn is laid out over 3 floors; On the ground floor, a spacious entrance hall leads to two large reception rooms. The first reception room has a computer with and internet can be used as a games room or second sitting room. The main reception room has a wood burning stove, comfortable sofa and armchairs. The dining area has double French windows opening onto a very private, walled courtyard garden ideal for outside eating. The large kitchen is modern and fully equipped. It has two large double windows that look out onto the courtyard. From the kitchen there is access to a laundry with washing machine, cold store room and toilet. On the first floor; three double bedrooms and the main bathroom with a claw foot bath, two basins and separate shower cabin. There is a separate lavatory. On the third floor a further three double bedrooms and large family bathroom with lavatory. The walled garden is not overlooked, mostly laid with shrubs and flowering plants.

Originally from the UK, we live and work in Lille and spend time (mostly weekends) in Licques when the house is available or with one of our many friends who live in the area. We bought the house in 1998 but have lived in France since 1991.

We loved the house and the town of Licques. Peter’s description of the house was “right on” and Peter was most helpful in getting us settled in and oriented. The TV was a large modern flat screen with many French and English channels. We also loved the location right on the town square. It is such a small town that we were not bothered with any noise. We loved having the Monday morning market right outside out door.

I highly recommend The Coaching Inn, it was one of our most pleasant stays.

The house is superb, full of character and plenty of room for a big family. Love the log fire and the history of the place. Village ideally situated; if you have young kids try the local theme park, the 'ball park' it`s not expensive and you can easily spend all day there. The owners are friendly and accommodating'

Perfect Base for a Motorcycle Trip

We spent a hot, sunny week in September 2016 at the coaching house. A group of 6 old bikers, off to France to enjoy riding our motorcycles visiting historic locations. Licques is in an ideal location, a short hop from the Eurotunnel & a stone's throw from a multitude of historic WW1/WW2 sites. These gave us great focal points for some superb ride outs, sometimes visiting 2 or 3 places of interest in the same day. The roads around here are superb, you can head out of Licques in any direction & find great winding roads. We stayed off the tolls & lazily followed the sat nav, so can hardly tell you which routes we took, but all routes were fun.

The coaching house is very impressive, a superb base for a motorcycle trip. Being able to park your motorcycle safely off the street behind the huge blue doors is a real bonus. We parked 4 bikes in the workshop area & 2 under the archway, but you would quite easily fit all 6 bikes in the workshop. Amal M's review is spot on. The coaching house will exceed your expectations, it is a wonderfully charismatic place in an great part of France. We really enjoyed our stay there.

Fantastic accommodation

We had a fantastic stay at he Coaching Inn. The house is located in the centre of town. The house was so spacious and so lovely. Two lovely sized living areas, one with a wood burner, which made our stay so cosy and the other with more sofas and seating area. The house has a very good sized kitchen which is well equipped with everything you need to cook a homey meal. The house has 6 double bedrooms, 2 of which were King size beds. All bedroom are of a very good size and very pleasant. There is an amazing bathroom in the second floor with a wonderful bath and a Jacuzzi shower. There is another family bathroom in the third floor. There are 3 toilets in the house. A lovely garden at the back. The property was exactly as described and exceeded our expectations. The property was very clean and well maintained. Peter is an excellent owner and provided us with excellent customer services and was very accommodating to our needs. I have already recommended this property to my friends and we are planning another trip soon as we really fall in love with this property. There are a couple of restaurants around and few bakeries and a pharmacy just a minute away. All in all we had such a wonderful stay.

A place of great character.......

We were looking for a character property in France, not too far from the coast but away from the commercial areas.

There were several places advertised, but we researched carefully and decided on this property.we were able to get the dates that we wanted, and we were not disappointed.

Despite being three hours late from the ferry from Dover, we were welcomed by Estelle, a local young lady who lives close by and who is retained by the owner Peter.

She showed us around this large house, left us a contact number in case we needed anything, and the left us.

The property is on three floors and there are three bedrooms on each of the upper floors, each with its own comprehensive bathrooms. The shower on the first floor is an absolute delight.

All of the rooms are large and they look out onto the town square. The ground floor has two main living rooms/ lounges and their are two flat screen TVs with Sat TV, DVD and VHS player and some tapes and DVDs to view also!

The furniture is well worn but comfortable, and there is adequate accommodation for up to twelve people.

A comprehensive and well equipped kitchen with additional equipment inc micro-wave and a utility room with washing machine etc and two large fridges and freezer.

There are a couple f restaurants in the village at either end, which are worth a look.

The property is in the centre of the small town and there is an open air market on Mondays with local produce, clothes stalls and some other offerings.

There are double doors at the side of the property that allow for entry for two cars to be parked securely. The reversing takes some careful driving,.... but we got the hang of it.

In summary, this is an old coaching in that has been renovated. It is a few hundred years old and this gives it the character that we liked. It offered value for money accommodation.

Would we recommend it? Absolutely!

The area around Licques is very beautiful with gently rolling hills and valleys with streams of crystal clear water babbling by. The beaches and other attractions are within easy reach and the roads are virtually traffic free (rediscover the pleasure of driving). Licques has a unique combination of activity yet is a very peaceful place.

Licques is a quiet, friendly rural town nestled in rolling hills, copses and babbling brooks. It has all the essential facilities within a stone’s throw of the front door of the house: a choice of three bakers that offer freshly baked and delicious cakes baked every day, a supermarket, two “real” butchers, cafes, restaurants, a pharmacy, bank, post office, hairdressers and a newly opened cheese shop selling a wide range of cheeses produced locally. In addition one of the bakers offers a freshly made to order pizza service.

The Pas de Calais is a region that many overlook. The countryside is made up of gently rolling hills, valleys and charming villages. Stay off the main roads and a whole different region is revealed; streams of clear water run through many areas, charming buildings and friendly locals are typical of the region. Ask at local tourist offices to make the most of what`s on and what to see and do.

The house is centrally located from large towns including Boulogne sur Mer with its fortress walled old town, quaint cobbled streets and restaurants, Saint Omer known for its beer and its central square, town hall, bars and restaurants and Calais for its shopping centre and factory outlet, just 30 minutes away. There are several sandy beaches offering their own water sports facilities (water skiing, sand yachting and surfing) along the coast from Boulogne to Calais the closest is only 25 minutes drive. The area is well known for a variety of theme parks; the water park in Le Touquet (big swimming pool with wave machine and slides giving onto the beach) and the Sealife park in Boulogne with a plethora of large and small sea creatures, are just a few of the many worth visiting. Golfers are spoilt for choice as there at least a dozen highly acclaimed courses in the area.

There is a market every Monday and always a market occurring in one of the surrounding villages. Ideal for walking/hiking and cycling there are many tracks to suit all levels.
