About the Owner

We live near to the Kent coast and although work prevents us spending as much time as we would like in France our proximity to the Channel and the price of tickets with 'no frills' airlines encourages us to visit whenever possible.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A wonderfully peaceful stay in a delightful secluded location in a beautiful region of France. Truth be told we could have done many more day trips, but we were seduced by the calm, peace and pool where we spent the majority of our time with good books and excellent local wine. Although we were only renting the pigeonnier we had, in effect, the sole use of a large corps de ferme with extensive well-kept grounds and best of all a great pool unencumbered by the usual mandatory french fencing, thanks to the solar-powered pool cover. The pigeonnier, itself, is tastefully renovated, decorated and furnished with excellent cooking facilities and comfortable beds. We enjoyed our stay so much that we returned within three weeks for a second visit. The pigeonnier is a wonderful, relaxing place to stay for two - fantastic spot, wonderful valley and situation. It was just what we were looking for. We read, swam and sketched and hope we captured the spirit of the place in our drawings.

From the Owner

We fell in love with the region when we first visited for the wedding of a goddaughter in 1999. In the summer of 2001 we rented our friends’ home and viewed various properties. We knew about the house in St. Dalmaze, but had discounted it because of its size. However we went to view it on a glorious sunny day, leaving our teenage children enjoying the pool at our friends’ house with the now famous parting words 'don’t worry, we are not going to buy this house as it is too big'. The rest is family history as we experienced a 'coup de foudre' when we first saw it and knew instantly that we had to do whatever we could to buy it. It was obviously meant to be and we have enjoyed some very special times in the house with family and friends.

Activity and Interests

For the more energetic the recently developed Cap Decouverte provides a beach with swimming and is approx. 30 minutes away.

The nearest airports are Rodez and Toulouse. Both are about 1.25 hours away. Ryanair fly to Rodez. British Airways, EasyJet and Flybe into Toulouse. Carcassonne is about 2.45 hours away. Car hiring is essential. The nearest train station is in Laguepie, but there is no possibility to hire a car locally, and there is no local public transport. The property is approx 590 miles easy driving from Calais, with the A20 motorway being about 45 minutes away at Caussade and the A75 at Rodez.

Laguepie is about 6.5km / 10 min away. It is the meeting of two rivers, the Viaur and the Aveyron and has an air of faded elegance, with its chateau and the legacy of some important festivals, the famous chestnut fair at the end of October, the spring fair, the Occitan fair in July and the village festival during August. There are 2 small well-stocked supermarkets, 2 bars, butcher, baker and candlestick maker, restaurants, pharmacy, newsagents, Post Office, Bank, Doctors and twice-weekly market.

Further Details:

The Midi-Pyrenees is a beautiful part of France and famous for its bastide towns with the nearest, and most beautiful, to us being Cordes-sur-Ciel, Najac and Albi. The latter is famous for its wonderful Cathedral, constructed of many, many rose pink bricks and its strong association with Eleanor of Aquitane and the Crusades and the Cathars. The Toulouse-Lautrec museum housed in the former Bishops' Palace is well worth a visit, as are the intricately planted gardens in the Palais de la Berbie. Cordes boasts wonderful views of the surrounding countryside and many interesting ateliers, as well as glass blowers offering courses in this art during the summer months. Najac retains its ancient charm with its chateau and cobbled streets, and is one of the few places where it is possible to eat "out of hours" at the Jardin du The, which remains open all day and out of season. St. Antonin Noble Val, with its famous, although crowded, Sunday morning market, is about 25 minutes away and is most picturesque (the film of Sebastian Faulks' novel, Charlotte Gray was filmed there). There are centres for hiring canoes and kayaks. Another famous market is held every Thursday morning in Villefranche de Rouergue. about 35 minutes away. The small market in Laguepie is twice weekly throughout the year and in the summer there are some night markets. Carmaux, although not a town of beauty, has a very good market on Friday mornings and there is an excellent market in Caussade, famous for its hatmakers, on a Monday morning. The region offers much in the way of recreational activities – golf, walking, riding, fishing, kayaking, bird watching, historical visits as well as the chance to try the local Gaillac wine on a vineyard trip. During the summer months a pontoon is installed on the river in Laguepie for all to enjoy. For the more energetic the recently developed Cap Decouverte provides a beach, swimming, zip wire, dry ski slope and skate park.

From the Owner

The property, on the edge of the hamlet of St. Dalmaze, seems to wrap its arms around you and invite you to enjoy its beautiful location. We hope that the Pigeonnier, which has recently been restored and converted into accommodation will do the same. Situated part way down the valley from the St. Christophe road the property enjoys lovely views within the peace and quiet of this special part of France.
