About the property

Cottage in Kilve, Nr. Bridgwater, Somerset, England - Set in Secluded Grounds of Over an Acre

Situated up a country lane and with views to the Quantock Hills to the south and west Rowditch is a haven of peace and birdsong. The gardens are set to lawn with trees, shrubs and flowers with stunning views across the Bristol Channel to Wales. Mature oaks, ashes, hawthorns, hazel and maple surround all perimeters of the property. Three miles away lie the beautiful villages of Stogursey and Nether Stowey, the home of the Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The Quantock Hills and the coast are each one mile away offering wonderful walks and views. Further afield, but within easy driving distance are Glastonbury, Bath and Wells, whilst to the west lie the wild heights of Exmoor. Closer to home are the market towns of Bridgwater and Taunton with theatres, cinemas and supermarkets, whilst the unspoilt mediaeval village of Dunster with its grand castle is 12 miles away. Two miles on is Minehead, home to the theme park attractions of Butlin's Minehead Resort and the Somerset Steam Railway.

About Richard Chandler

Rowditch was the family home where our children grew up in a wonderful, natural setting which offers so many freedoms that many children today are denied. We all still love spending time here, walking the footpaths and bridleways and watching the wildlife and the seasons as they change. We still work the vegetable bed - it would be a waste not to - and very much enjoy harvesting the fruits of our labour, knowing our produce is totally organic and taking it straight from garden to kitchen. And of course we are delighted to share it. Here you can relax to the tune of the blackcap and the woodpecker's drumming and learn or re-familiarise yourself with the flora and fauna of South West England.

Richard Chandler purchased this house in 1970

Why Richard Chandler chose Kilve

We love the remote, peaceful setting where we can escape from the rush of town life and yet be able to travel into town and have easy access to modern amenities.

What makes this house unique

There is a travel cot available and also a high chair. For a visiting musician there is also a Yamaha baby grand piano properly tuned and in mint condition. Beautiful views of the hills (Quantocks and Exmoor), Somerset countryside and from the garden views of Wales across the Bristol Channel and the sea.

Notes on accommodation: The cottage is available for weekly lets and not for individual weekends. We accept well behaved dogs, up to 2 dogs. There is a supplement of £20 per week for each dog. Outside: The kitchen/diner opens out onto a large terrace, a beautiful setting for alfresco dining. The grounds of garden, woodland and meadow are completely enclosed and are therefore safe for children to play and explore. There are small swings and slide, and the long meadow is a perfect site for ball games and frisbee. There is a small organic vegetable plot and guests are welcome to harvest the crops that are in season. The sheltered environment means Rowditch is a lovely place for outside living and barbecues. The drive at the front of the house provides ample parking for four vehicles. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen provided (not towels). Maid/cleaning service once a week or between lets. Other: Small conservatory overlooking the garden.

Elegant cottage in amongst lovely countryside

  • 5 of 5

A spacious, comfortable, and well equipped, charming cottage with lovely large garden and views. Thanks for sharing it.

Varied walks from the door to the coastline and if you wanted (although we drove to Holford first) the same could be achieved in the beautiful Quantocks.

Village shop in Kilve has small but sufficient range of food etc and the pub - The Hood - served us an excellent evening meal. And the nearby Chantry tearoom provided a pleasing cream tea.

If you enjoy horse riding the Quantock Trekking centre at Bashford is a well run establishment offering good rides, with breathtaking views, for any standard.

The bonus of a balmy, dry week was just that, a bonus, but obviously added to the overall enjoyment.

Rowditch is well worth a visit!

Beautiful, idyllic cottage in a fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

Myself, husband and two boys (6 and 5), enjoyed a lovely stay here with my parents and sister.

The property is perfect and the garden brilliant with so much to explore - the boys had great fun with the garden toys and playing hide and seek.

The cottage itself is very well equipped and has everything you need for your stay. There is loads of room and each room has its own character. It was lovely in the morning to open the doors and let the air in and view the garden.

It's a good location for several day trips as well as being next to Kilve beach and a very short drive from Watchet. Plus loads of walks and great places to eat on the door step.

I would definitely recommend and if we are in the area we will be going back

Lovely week with the four grandchildren. Went on the train to Minehead, fossil hunting on beach and walks on the Moors where we found some friendly ponies.

Wonderful Quiet Homely Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We spent one week in this clean, spacious, comfortable and quiet cottage with lovely gardens. Helped by hot and sunny weather we had a great time - spent evenings in the garden and lunch on the patio. Good location just off a main road but not bothered by any road noise. Would highly recommend.
