About the Owner

The owners, Susan and Tim, live in the United States. Their daughter, Lucy, for whom the property is named, is studying at the University of Exeter in England.

Although they have traveled and lived all over the world, it is Italy that captured their hearts and imaginations. With the help of expert builders, craftsmen, and artisans, Susan and Tim created a very special home in a very special place.

They hope that any visitor to Casa Lucia will enjoy it as much as they do.

'The situation of Casa Lucia, with its spectacular views, is just stunning…we had the most peaceful and tranquil time I can remember. We are so reluctant to leave!

(The Hayes and Ford families)

'Our two families had one of the best ever holidays at Casa Lucia. It was like being in our own private luxury resort... The beautiful pool was in constant use, from the early morning swim to the end of the day under the stars. Wonderful!' (Patrick and Nicholls families)

'The website is totally accurate in its description and photographs, the house, accommodation, gardens and pool were absolutely beautiful...We certainly hope to return.' (The Strangeway/Al Sayigh families)

'What a special house! Thank you for allowing us to stay. The view is breathtaking and the design of the house is fabulous. We used the house as home base for trips to Florence, Cinque Terre, and Lerici. We also explored the nearby countryside. It was a great treat to have Danilo and Elisa make the outstanding pizza feast. Thank you for all your great suggestions of activities. Casa Lucia will forever be embedded in our memories!' (Scot, Suzanne, Sarah, & Matthew)

'We had an amazing stay at Casa Lucia. We especially loved sunbathing by the pool, admiring the view and spotting eagles. Despite the road, we took several day trips visiting Lucca, Cinque Terre and attempting to climb the spectacular mountains that can be seen from the house. We had a spectacular pizza feast courtesy of Danilo and Elisa (16! A new record!) which inspired us to fire up the oven and make our own during our 2nd week here.' (Emily, Katie & Ryan)

'This is the perfect place to relax - a beautiful haven of peace and tranquility. Life really should be like this all the time….Casa Lucia is very special – a stunning location, beautiful surroundings and such an amazing home. If only we could have stayed another week – still, with luck, we can come back. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Loved seeing the restoration photos.' (Karen, Natalie, Isabelle, & Benjamin)

'What a comfortable and beautiful home in an exquisite location. Thanks for sharing it with us.' (Susan and Jim)

We had a lovely time in this beautiful home celebrating my 40th birthday with friends from the Midwest, USA. Gorgeous views, food, & wine – we loved our day trip to Cinque Terre and Florence and lazy days by the pool. The mountains and sunsets rival anywhere in the world. Alessandra & Co. were fantastic chefs and the local shops lovely as well. Thank you for a memorable week.' (Jessi & Mike)

Location

From the Owner

When you visit Casa Lucia, you will see immediately why we fell in love with this amazing place. The views are, simply, astounding. This really is an unspoilt and undiscovered part of Tuscany. The lush green olive groves, the sunny vineyards, and the dense forests that are home to wild boar and deer are just as they must have been in medieval times. There is a sense of permanence, tradition, and peace in this extraordinary area. Away from the tourists, this part of Italy is special to us because it embraces and epitomizes a way of life that has been known for generations. Sitting on the terrace gazing at the magnificent mountains and feeling the sun on our faces, there is no place we would rather be. We think that you will feel the same!

Special interest holidays:

This is an area of spectacular beauty and is a destination of choice for many landscape artists. The proximity to the Carrara mountains and the marble towns of Carrara and Pietrasanta mean that it is also a destination of choice for marble sculptors. Cycling is a major pasttime for Italians and visitors alike. Good quality cycles can be rented in Aulla if you do not bring your own.

Hiking is also popular in the area, and there is a growing community of hikers during the summer on their way through the Garfagnana. History buffs also come to this area to study medieval Italy. Local festivals that recreate medieval village life abound during the summer. They are always fun for everyone.

Coast/Beach:

Lerici is the closest beach, 50 minutes drive away. Ten minutes further on by car (or half an hour by ferry) is Cinque Terre, the world heritage site of five villages nestled into the cliffs, with little beaches and rock pools for swimming. Also from Casa Lucia are the beaches at Forte dei Marmi are about 45 minutes south and the Italian Riviera 50 minutes north.

Travel:

Pisa Airport (the main airport for Tuscany) is about 70km away, about 90 minutes drive to Casa Lucia. A car is essential. SatNav could be a benefit. Please note, the final 600 metres of road leading to the house is part track and part paved. Aulla is the main train station in the area, about 20 minutes drive from Casa Lucia, with services to Florence, Lucca, Pisa, and - with changes - cities all over Italy.

Nearest beach Lerici 50 mins (beach, restaurants, shops, ferry to Portovenere and Cinque Terre).

Further Details:

The nearest supermarket is in Gragnola less than 10 minutes drive away. Although not a large store, it is well stocked and has a nice delicatessen counter with the finest cheeses, fresh bread, hams, and antipasti. It also has a butcher counter. Other good smaller supermarkets close by are in Fivizzano, fifteen minutes away and in Pallerone, fifteen minutes away on the way to Aulla. The larger supermarkets are in Aulla (30 minutes away)and Sarzanna (40 minutes away). Fashion shopping in Sarzana. High-end shopping (Italian designers, for example) in Forte dei Marmi (50 minutes away). Genova, Santa Margherita and the Italian Riviera just over an hour away. Excellent train service from Aulla daily to Florence, Pisa, and Lucca.

Facilities

From the Owner

One of the wonderful things about this area is that we are close to the sea and, particularly, to the spectacular Cinque Terre - the national heritage site of five gorgeous little villages built into the cliffs overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean. It's nice to take a day trip and hike along the trail and stop for lunch in a tiny little restaurant perched on a cliff. For a morning's jaunt, we particularly love to take the ferry from Lerici (just 40 minutes drive away) to Portovenere - if we're lucky we'll see a wedding taking place in the glorious church that stands high on a cliff in the Bay of Poets. And, for a special day out, we love to take out a boat, pack a picnic, and take to the sea. Coming home to the luxury and comfort of Casa Lucia is the perfect end to a perfect day.
