About the property

The cottages are fully furnished and equipped to a high standard with our visitor's every comfort in mind. Each cottage sleeps four guests in one double and one twin bedroom. Please ask for our list of visitors recommendations. Both cottages are situated on separate sides of a large, secluded courtyard. Each with their own garden to the rear with BBQ and garden furniture. Plus of course freedom to wander throughout the estate, explore the nature trails and picnic tables are provided for you to enjoy the atmosphere. Roam down the track to the fields, through the oak glade and then return along the canal towpath to your own holiday hideaway. Situated just 3 kilometres from the market town of Rostrenen which is known as the crossroads of Brittany, due to it's central position. It is a well serviced town with 3 supermarkets and several restaurants and creperies to suit all tastes and pockets. Local help and advice available to make sure your stay is tailored to your requirements.

It is now several weeks since we arrived home from our wonderful holiday but our time with you at Magourou remains firmly in our memories. Hard to specify the highlights from our first impression of the cottages in your lovely courtyard, the welcome dinner and sweet peas, to the walks in the glade and bike rides along the canal - it was all magnificent. Thank you so much for all your kind hospitality - hopefully we will be back one day and have already passed on your brochures to a number of our friends and relations

…..Helen and Bill, Australia

Wonderful location for exploring Brittany in any direction in a day.

We have both sustained warm glows from our two weeks at Magourou. How

did I stumble across the idea of going to Brittany and then your web

site? I have no idea, but we have never made a better vacation

decision. And now we will avidly follow your progress on the manoir.

We are telling all sorts of people to rent Spring Cottage (or the

shire horse stable!), and we would love to return.

……Jeanne and Ross, San Diego, U.S.A

Magourou is a truly wonderful place and we enjoyed the peace and quiet of it’s location. Being able to cycle along the canal towpath was great. It’s a pity we did not get to try out some of the other cycling routes you kindly suggested. We enjoyed our day at the beach and at Lac de Guerledan. We had a great time and would certainly consider coming back again. We will certainly recommend Magourou to our friends. Thank you Robin and Gill for making us very welcome and for providing such comprehensive equipment and facilities.

……The Agostini Family, London

One of the nicest gites we have used. A beautiful discovery. Everything within reach yet cut off from the world. Wonderful countryside, charming, helpful hosts and such good and comfortable gite. We shall be back and tell our friends.

……Diane and Peter, Somerset

A lovely relaxing spot – wonderful location for touring or just for “staying home” and walking the canal.

….Jane & Don, USA

2nd visit – so lovely to be back again. Thanks for another wonderful week at Magourou. We feel so welcome.

….Jane & Don, USA

Peace and tranquility in an idyllic location. We enjoyed chilling out far away from the stresses and strains of modern living. Robin and Gill are excellent hosts, friendly and welcoming. Magical Magourou.

… Carol and Peter, Sussex

We have fallen under the spell of this magical place. We have had the most relaxing holiday. The boys have had a real boy’s holiday making the most of nature’s theme park. We can’t wait to return.

….The Weston Family

Thanks for sharing your little corner of paradise with us once again. As I sit here I can just conjure up a picture of the courtyard in my mind and it is lovely to revisit it like that.

….. The Weston Family (again!)

Actions speak louder than words – our third visit and we’ll be back.

….The Weston Family (again...again!)

Sheer heaven. We’ve had a fantastic stay in a lovely gite in a beautiful location with wonderful hospitality. See you next year.

… Another lovely holiday spent at Magourou. See you again next year… Thank you.

……Anne and Brian, Worcs

We both said what a lovely holiday and wish we could have stayed longer. It was a complete change and relaxing break for us. Seeing the Brittany countryside and wildlife was a real treat especially seeing salamanders in their natural habitat. Thank you for making us feel so welcome.

….. Mike and Barbara, Kent

Thank you for making our honeymoon so special, our arrival here was amazing, you made the gite look magical. Our entire stay has been amazing, we’ve never felt so relaxed.

…Lorraine and Eddie, Derbyshire

Splendid accommodation, splendid scenery and splendid hosts! What more could anyone want?

…. Janice and John, Florida, USA

Just lovely! All I could have wished for and more than I’d hoped.

… Pauline, Leeds

We have enjoyed a wonderfully restful week in this most comfortable gite, which has been furnished with visitors’ every comfort in mind.

…. Mr & Mrs B, Somerset

Beautiful cottage and surroundings, and every extra we could wish for. Look forward to coming back next year.

….Rachel & Dan, South Wales

It was a brilliant holiday – so peaceful and relaxing and we were made to feel very spoilt. We’ll be back!

….. Mr & Mrs Austen, Norwich

Many thanks from all of us for making us so welcome and for letting us stay in the loveliest cottages we have ever had the chance of using in France.

… The Ogden Family, Wilts

We have absolutely loved every moment we’ve spent at Magourou. The cottage itself is perfect; the countryside around is truly breathtaking. Thank you for all the care you have taken to make it such a memorable holiday.

….. Kathryn and John, Wales

Superb location, very comfortable accommodation, impressed by the attention to detail and warm welcome.

….John and Mary, Sussex

Magourou is the best equipped and most comfortable French property we have stayed in.

….Mr & Mrs Francis, Bristol

The Stable Cottage is a truly magical place which eases the stresses and strains of life in England – just what the doctor ordered. Despite it being winter the cottage and surrounding land is beautiful and peaceful – the log fire on cold nights with a glass of wine is the best way to relax.

…Mike and Dawn, Nottingham

Thank you for your welcome and the laid back atmosphere at Magourou, we felt very comfortable and couldn’t have asked for better in the cottage, it’s obvious a lot of thought has gone into equipping it and presenting it to such a high standard.

….Linda and Bernie, Denbighshire

We needed peace and quiet, stressless tranquility, food and wine, fishing and fun. We found it! Our holiday was superb and so stimulating that Sean proposed marriage to our daughter – was accepted. It will remain a magical place for all of us for this and many other reasons. Long may Robin and Gill remain in this so beautiful part of La Belle France. We’ll be back!

….Ken et famille

Our second visit, but not our last, so much to see and do. Thank you Gill and Robin for making us feel so welcome and comfortable.

…Wendy and David

What a charming place, I wish I could pick it up and take it home. Very comfortable and welcoming.

….Jennifer and Colin

Worth every moment of the internet search – perfect spot to explore Brittany but after many drives found our favourite place was right here. Loved walking and cycling the canal in the most beautiful area of France.

….Joanne, Mark & Alice, Australia

Thank you both SO much for making us feel so welcome and all your help and advice. We have loved every moment here. The weather could not have been better – Thank you.

….Mr & Mrs S, Somerset

What a paradise! Could not improve on the cottage, walking, country or help and generosity from Robin and Gill. Thank you, we had a lovely holiday.

….Suzanne & Kenneth, Dublin

2nd visit – Twice as good as first visit. Weather great. Did more exploring. So hard to go home when sun is shining, food is great and wine is cheap. Huge thanks to Gill and Robin for hospitality and generosity. Hope to be back again.

….Suzanne & Kenneth, Dublin

So comfortable – home from home and better – peace and tranquility and the warmest of welcomes. Thank you for providing such a wonderful setting for our first visit to Brittany. We will be back.

….Mr & Mrs A. C. Chelmsford

Absolutely perfect. Beautiful cottage & surroundings. Loads of good information. Restful and peaceful. Excellent hospitality.

….The Emerys, Sheffield

Cannot really find words to describe how much we enjoyed the cottage and surroundings. Everything was perfect and lots of great little touches that made it feel extra special. Could only get one week so will have to come back!

....Lesley & Barry W-M, Birmingham

We have had a really lovely week in this beautiful, comfortable and incredibly well equipped cottage. Thank you with all your help and advice about what to do in this lovely part of France.

....Philip & Katie

2nd trip back and equally as good as the first time…A week certainly not long enough…Great to see the place again and it’s wildlife. Fab fishing. Hopefully back next year…

…The Smiths, Preston

Spent 4 wonderful days (not long enough) in this wonderful place. Exceeded all our expectations. Hope to be back soon.

… Roy & Christine K, Guildford

Perfect in so many ways. The cycling and walking was excellent, and the location perfect for both relaxing at home and as a base for day trips. A fantastic break and already looking forward to next year.

…Darby Family, Surrey

The best thing about Magourou was all the butterflys and when we went butterfly catching. I also liked watching the buzzards and the deer that my Dad spotted.

Zoe, age 7

Magourou lives up to the promise of the excellent website. Great location with everything you could need supplied. Robin and Gill have done a great job and offer a warm welcome. Thanks for everything!

Magourou is situated exactly in the centre of Brittany so makes an ideal touring holiday. For a day out the north, south and west coasts are all within an hour's drive. But nearer to hand the Lac de Guerledan with a beach and watersports is only a 15 minute drive and even nearer is the Lac de Glomel which is smaller but just as picturesque for swimming, walking, fishing, etc.

Magourou is within easy reach of many cross Channel ferry ports. We have a special arrangement with Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth for discounted ferry fares for our visitors. Please contact us for details.

The Channel Tunnel and very good value crossings of the eastern end of the Channel are available for residents of south east England.

Low cost flights from Exeter, Southampton and Birmingham to Brest and Rennes with car hire available from the airports.

Magourou is situated in the heart of central Brittany which forms an ideal touring base to discover one of France's most distinctive and attractive regions.

Nearby the canal flows into the Lac de Guerledan which is the largest lake in Brittany. The rustic landscape is a haven for walkers, ramblers, mountain bikes and horse riders as well as watersports enthusiasts. The countryside is full of market towns and historic villages and we offer maps and info all local attractions.

Further Details:

France of course is renowned for it's cuisine and Brittany is no exception. Being a maritime race, seafood is a speciality. Creperies are a favourite over the whole region offering an imaginative range of sweet crepes or savoury buckwheat galettes. Of course the best way to enjoy these are together with a bowl of local cider. Patisseries are as good here as anywhere in France and Rostrenen's is one of the best in Brittany - so definitely worth a try! Rostrenen is a well serviced town with 3 supermarkets and several restaurants and creperies.

The French really know how to live well. They take life at a more relaxed pace, enjoy superb food and drink and appreciate the finer points of life. On holiday you too can experience the good life. Stroll around the local market, selecting the freshest of produce or unwind at a pavement cafe and watch the world go by.

Brittany is steeped in tradition and history and the Breton people are justly proud of their heritage. It is a land of ancient myths and legends. Breton culture thrives and traditional costume, dance and music is celebrated everywhere. Every town and village still has it's pardon where the local saint is taken out from the church for it's annual pilgrimage. All visitors are encouraged to join in these local festivities.

The Abbaye de Bon Repos, just 15 minutes on the N164, is a ruined abbey picturesquely set on the banks of the canal. It is well worth a visit especially on Sunday mornings when there is a traditional market selling local produce. Breton villages are history brought to life and their churches and monuments spill over with ancient stories. They are so well cared for as are the traditional granite cottages with their colourful window boxes in summer.

  • Notes on accommodation: Magourou is suitable for all ages. All our prices are fully inclusive of bedlinen, towels, end of stay cleaning, water, electricity and loan of adult bicycles for exploring the beautiful Nantes Brest canal. Free internet access via Wi-Fi. Fully inclusive of electric heating in winter. Full laundry room available; washing machine, tumble drier, iron and ironing board. Cot and high chair provided at no extra cost. Outside: Magourou is set in the heart of the peaceful, Breton countryside. The cottages are set on our own 50 acre private estate with nature trails, woodland and fields to wander and enjoy. Deer, red squirrel, owls, wildlife and birdlife too numerous to mention. The beautiful Nantes Brest canal forms the centrepiece of Brittany and the land of Magourou borders the canal for over half a kilometre. It creates a wonderful atmosphere of tranquillity and is bordered by a well maintained towpath which forms a safe and picturesque cycle and walkway to enjoy at your leisure. A disused railway track also runs through Rostrenen. This is now a designated cycle path which runs for 111 kilometres in both directions and is ideal for families. But for a day out the rugged north coast, the sand dunes of the south coast and the expanses of sandy beaches on the west coast are all within an hour's drive from Magourou.
