About the property

Cottage near Ourique Southern Alentejo Tranquillity, stunning views, private cottage and pool.

Casa Sossagado is a charming private cottage with its own totally private pool and stunning views across the garden to the lake and countryside beyond. It is within our 23 acre garden which you are free to roam. Our house is not visible from the privacy of the cottage. For cooler winter nights snuggle up by the log burning stove. There are many books, games, CD's, English and Portugese TV and CD player. There is a pay as you go internet facility if you really can't get away from it aĺl!

The property complies with the requirements of the Alojamento Local licence.Registration number 6165.

The wider garden is a conservation area providing traditional natural habitat for the regions birds and animals. You have complete freedom there climbing the natural paths (you'll need proper shoes or trainers for your own comfort). Go to the trig point on the garden's boundary - the highest point for miles There are seats around so rest a while and take in the magnificent views or if you prefer try a gentle walk around the lake. Watch the swallows swòoping down to feed. Fish if you like! The fishing is good with excellent carp and wide mouthed bass.

Spring brings carpets of wild flowers and the nights bright starry skies unspoilt by light pollution. Look out for the stunning milky way and shooting stars. Not to mention the sunrise over our lake and often quite amazing sunsets. Turn left out of the gates and explore the many paths through the forest and beyond.

This is a rural paradise yet within approx 10 mins by car you access a good supermarket next to a pizza/pasta cafe, medical / dental facilities, pharmacy, petrol station and other shops. Five mins further on brings you into Ourique with cafe bars, banks, restaurants, optician, garage and shops. There is a good view point near to the local Camera i.e Town Hall, with excellent views of the whole area. Roads to the Algarve or the west coast if you fancy a change are good and generally quiet. It is about one hour by car to either without rushing.

The area is a bird watchers haven with over 25 different species in and around the garden dependant upon season including the booted eagle, crested lark, oriel, hoopoe, jay, montagues harrier, woodchat shrike and the regions very own azure winged magpie.

We can sort out your washing if you wish. The cottage is very well equipped but just ask if you need anything -- you'll find us if you want us but never intrusive. It is your private holiday - ENJOY YOURSELVES!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The beautiful cottage is spacious, very well equipped and looked after with the clean pool privately situated. The owner is very friendly and spares no effort to make his guests feel comfortable. Although sparsely populated, you can reach everything by car. There are some idylic little towns to visit, the Algave coast is easy and fast to reach. The nearby supermarket is well-assorted and you can buy very good regional food, there are also some good restaurants offering Alentejo specialities." From Bettina and Thorsten Sielk, September 2010

The peace and tranquility were brilliant. We saw 29 species of birds from the house on one day. The cottage has a cosy kitchen, dining room, lounge and 2 pleasant bedrooms, one being on-suite. There is a good sized patio area which has a charcoal BBQ. We had use of an outdoor pool and over 20 acres to wander around, including a small lake. If you want peace and quiet then this Casa could be for you. Anne and Alan Miller September 2013

We want to live there!

  • 5 of 5

This is a very special place, which feels a a bit like Shangri La. You probably won't understand how truly special it is until you get home.

The cottage is lovely, with everything that we needed, and is set in what could be your own private nature reserve or park.

The sun rises over the lake in front of the cottage and sets on the hills behind the secluded swimming pool. You can watch both from different sitting areas, in the company of nesting swallows or the resident geckos and lizards.

If you want to get back to the simple life Casa Sossagado is just about perfect.

Although Mike and Vicky live on site their house is out of sight of the cottage. They are the best hosts you could ask for, ably supported by their dogs and cats who sometimes stop by on their own to make sure that you're OK.

We love the area and enjoy exploring the local towns and seaside resorts, which haven't been spoilt by the excesses of the tourist trade.

We've been lucky enough to visit for three years running and will certainly be returning again.

You won't want to leave

  • 5 of 5

Vicky and Mike have created an tranquil ecological paradise outside of Ourique. They are wonderful hosts: charming, generous and helpful, just who you wish you had as neighbors at home. The cottage is clean, very generously equipped, and more than big enough for two adults and two teenagers. It even comes supplied with plenty to eat and drink upon arrival! The location is great for excursions, but don't plan on too many. You will want to watch sunrises and sunsets, take long morning and evening walks through the area, and go for an afternoon swim in your own private pool. Be sure not to miss the spectacular night sky!

April Visit 2016

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful surprise when we stepped out of our car at the 'cottage' near Ourique, 360 degrees of stunning views and a great welcome from Mike & Vicky. We felt so relaxed in the very comfortable, well equipped cottage and extensive grounds with a lake and pool. Mike & Vicky were only too pleased (but never intrusive) to give us ideas for visits to interesting places locally, point us in the right direction for eating places or easy routes to the coast. There's much wildlife and birdwatching to be had here in the grounds and throughout the surrounding area.

Really looking forward to another visit.

The perfect tranquil getaway.

  • 5 of 5

What a truly wonderful way to spend 10 days in Portugal. We wanted to mark my 60th in peace and a bit of warmth. The cottage, a fully equipped home from home, is set in wonderful country side. Even though our Sat Nav was able to get us ten metres from the door, Mike met us in Ourique to guide us there. The last 2 km, on unsurfaced road, reinforced the air of remoteness (once the dust settled). On entering the charming cottage we were welcomed by spacious, clean & comfortable accommodation, as well as complementary bread, butter, milk, tea, coffee, fruit & home grown vegetables. On! & some beer.

Then it happened. The sun rose over the lake. The breeze rustled through the Eucalyptus Forrest. While the rabbits & birds scurried through the early morning mist. The beautiful gardens & pool area are bordered by sympathetically managed wild grass & scrub land.

We could have spent the whole time in these beautiful surroundings but we had to pop into the local market to get essential supplies. Wine & beer.

Mike & Vicky, along with their pet cats & dogs (cast of Fawty Towers) were the perfect hosts, offering help & advise but never intrusive.

We came home with many happy memories & a determination to return.

Perfect piece of peaceful, pretty Portugal

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed every minute of our stay at this property which boasts some of the best views around. The property has far reaching views being situated on a natural high point over eucalyptus trees and the Serra de Monchique mountain range. We had wonderful weather and spent our days doing exactly what you should do on holiday: relaxing by the pool with cold drinks in hand! There are several nearby restaurants (we particularly liked Villa Italia in Castro Verde and Castro da Cola) and an excellent supermarket within 10 minutes drive. The property is equipped with everything you need, is kept very clean and Mike and Vicky were the perfect hosts. The stars at night are simply outstanding as there is no light pollution; I so wish I knew my constellations better! I cannot recommend this property and this part of Portugal enough for a relaxing, away from it all holiday. Thanks to Mike and Vicky and of course Polly, Manuel, Basil and Sybil (their dogs and cats who our children simply adored).

It would take a far better writer than me to convey what this little plot of paradise has to offer.

We booked this place for 2 weeks based on its setting and its excellent reviews. I'm always a natural sceptic when it comes to website reviews, but I have to say in this case, whilst they were all 5 star none of them seem to do the place justice. Mike and Vicky are excellent hosts, there when you want them and not there when you don't. The Cottage itself is extremely well equipped and very comfortable in all aspects, a real home from home. The pool area is a real suntrap and with it overlooking the Eucalyptus forests with all its abundant wildlife could not be positioned any better. The rest of the extensive grounds are equally as lovely. Perfect for just sitting, cold beer in hand overlooking the beautiful lake and its surroundings with only birdsong for company.

The cottage provides an excellent base for touring this beautiful region. The beaches to the west are spectacular and very quiet. The charming little town of Ourique has several good restaurants, all of which sell the local delicacy of Black Pig Pork. This has to be tasted to be believed!!! The local supermarket is superb offering excellent quality produce at very good prices. Local wine is both cheap and as I know to my cost, very drinkable! There are so many other places and things to do I could tell you about but I advise you to visit and find these for yourself, you wont be disappointed.

As far as we are concerned this cottage is the perfect relaxing holiday. However, beware! If you want high rise blocks, English Pubs, Indian take-aways and vastly inflated prices then I suggest the Algarve. If, like us you want to see the real Portugal in total tranquillity then I could not recommend this Cottage highly enough. The only downside is having to leave this wonderful place.

Thank you Mike and Vicky for a truly amazing holiday, can't wait to come back...

We were delighted to be able to welcome you here, and even happier knowing that you both enjoyed a wonderful and relaxing break, just I guess, as the Doctor ordered for Penny. She really did appear to have restored her health albeit in only a couple of weeks. Thank you Penny also for the beautiful drawing of the guest cottage now framed and hanging for future guests to enjoy. We both look forward to seeing you again whenever you can escape the rigour's of your daily lives. in the meantime wish you Penny a continual improvement in your health under the watchful eye of Bill. Coast/Beach:

The beaches in the Algarve are approximately 50 minutes by car, as are the often less busy beaches and coves on the West coast, traditionally favoured by the locals.

Nearest airport is Faro being 95km away. A hire car is essential.

Distances:

Closest town is Ourique about 10 minutes by car. The main closest towns are Beja which is 60km north of Ourique or Albufeira which is approx 65km south and is the closest Algarve town.
