Cottage in Etel, near Auray, Morbihan, Southern Brittany, France - Traditional Breton Stone House In Picturesque Coastal Town With Highly Rated Golf Course 6km Away

This holiday home is situated on a quiet road leading down to 'Le Sach' a tributary of the Riviere d'Etel. There is off-road parking and a good sized rear garden with fruit trees, garden furniture and BBQ. The house is light, spacious, comfortably furnished and well equipped with books, toys for the beach and table games for indoors. There is UK-TV/DVD/CD player and a collection of CDs and videos. We have recently set up a secure internet access (unlimited Wifi) which visitors may use at no extra charge. The nearest beach, public tennis courts, shops, restaurants and bars are within walking distance. Etel was, until the late '50s, a thriving tuna fishing port but is now a popular French holiday resort. It boasts a micro-climate (more than 1800 hours of sunshine/annum - Meteo France) which extends the holiday season from May to late September. Etel is between Vannes and Lorient and is easily reached from the ferry ports of Roscoff, St.Malo, Cherbourg and Caen. By car from the Channel Tunnel takes about 7hrs. The fast train from Paris arrives at Auray, 20 minutes away. The nearest airport is Lorient.

About the Owner

We intended to retire to Etel but when the time came my husband wanted to go south to Bordeaux, to work on a vineyard and write a book! We now have our own very small vineyard and are both working hard on the land but the book is still not finished!

Having lived and worked for 40 years in inner London, we are grateful for peace and the space we enjoy in the French countryside where the pace of life reminds us of our childhoods in '50s England.

The only downside is that our three children, now married with families, are not here all the time. But they all love Etel and now our eight grandchildren are learning to appreciate the simple pleasures offered by sun, sand and sea.

We hope that, like us, our visitors will return home refreshed and happy after staying in Etel.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The house was great and nothing went wrong! We had an excellent stay and would certainly recommend your house and Etel to others. It was really good being able to walk to the restaurants and they were all excellent in their various ways. (Wilts)

The house was very quiet and yet was close to the shops and restaurants in the town. There was plenty of space in the house and a great variety of books, games and DVDs.We enjoyed our week in Etel and had a lovely holiday (Cork)

The week was very enjoyable and the place felt quite home from home. We particularly liked being able to spend some of the day and evening in the garden. Your website is very detailed and that helped us make the decision.

(Coventry)

The weather was fabulous with just one days rain..we thought Etel was charming (Manchester)

House comfortable and well situated for beaches and town. The lagoon an added bonus for young children. (Sussex)

It has been an adventure of discovery. Thanks for the memories (Herts)

Lovely house, excellent location

  • 5 of 5

This house provided everything we needed for an excellent family holiday. Inside it is spacious and comfortable and outside there is a lovely garden (although the weather meant we were not able to fully enjoy this facility). It is only a short walk into Etel where there are a few shops, restaurants and a large market once a week. There is plenty to do and see in the area and I am sure we will be returning in the near future.

Ideal location in a lovely area

  • 5 of 5

We had a most enjoyable week in this property in Etel, the location is ideal and the area is beautiful and varied. The house is clean and spacious and has a good-sized garden with both sun and shade. The time flew past with so much to do, it was good to be able to walk into the town for a meal or just an evening drink, and the countryside and beaches, little coves and the upper reaches of the river all just a short drive away.

Two weeks of enjoyment

  • 5 of 5

Two of us wanted to revisit Brittany after many years, we had no knowledge of Etel but the house, described as friendly, appealed to us. It is more than friendly, it hugs you and one feels very welcome. There is a lot of room,a very nice lounge, and a sitting room which we mostly used because it has a well behaved log fire and is next to the fully equipped kitchen. We were very comfortable and happy there. The location is good too, very quiet yet within easy reach of the croissant shop!! Not only do we recommend the house but we also loved the area. You do not have to try hard to find enough to do every day,but a car is certainly needed, and our fortnight passed all too soon.We are grateful to the owners, who were most helpful and considerate to this octagenarian. Happy memories remain.

We had a great week in Etel, The cottage was perfect, every detail had been taken care of so we felt like it really was a home from home. Clean, well maintained with every thing that a family needed. The web photo's do not do justice to the property which was much larger than we anticipated. Good size kitchen with all amenities, pleasant lounge and large dining room that could easily accommodate eight people. Lovely garden that caught the sun all day. We wish we could have stayed longer!

Very spacious cottage, with lots of space for everyone and clean. The garden was georgous and quiet. Lovely area and perfect for walking around etel. Our kids loved the lagoon and it was so safe for them. The markets were so big and fun.

The cottage was full of everything you would need

Owner's Response: So happy to read that Selina and her family enjoyed Etel. It really is a perfect location for a beach holiday. The safety of the lagoon was what attracted us when we first visited in 1987 but at that point watching our grand children play there was still a pipe dream. Now they have progressed to the large sandy beaches further along the coast but knowing that more youngsters have benefitted from the same early experiences is heart warming.

Etel - quiet and quirky cottage.

  • 4 of 5

Ideally situated on the edge of the fishing town of Etel and ideal as a centre for exploring the Morbihan area of Brittany. The property is two linked cottages, plus a large extension. The cottages are typical of the area with the bathroom updates being added to the porches! Probably a shock to some people. Plenty of walks from the property and you could walk to the sea, but with a young family, probably best to take the car. A reasonable walk into the town and its eating places. For those that like to tour, Etel is a good base without all the traffic of the main sights along the coast. The property was clean and the guides comprehensive. Generally if you are considering this area, then you could do a lot worse. The house was quirky in layout and fun to think of the ways that you would have managed the changes. Some of the fixtures and fittings could have been more substantial, you could see the cost savings! This tends to be the case with pure holiday homes.

Owner's Response: Had we won the lottery we would most likely have gutted the house and started again but changes made have been ongoing and completed, as we could afford them, over a period of 27 years. So, yes, the layout could be described as ‘quirky’ but our visitors usually appreciate the house for all the holiday amenities that this guest, who has generously awarded us 4 Stars, has outlined. The ‘review’ facility is new to this site and so these comments have prompted me to share one of the many unsolicited emails we have received. This mail is from last summer 2013. "We just wanted to drop you a note to say how much we enjoyed our holiday in Etel and staying in the house. Coming from a typically tall and thin Victorian terrace in London with minimal garden, it was absolutely lovely for us and the children to have so much space. We really appreciated the garden and all the play equipment and books. And that’s before we add in the beaches and the lagoon, the roundabout (thank you for the tokens), the farm shop and the whole locale. We’ve come back feeling like we’ve had a real holiday". When we bought the house in 1987 it was to give our own growing family such a holiday experience so it is heartwarming to know that the Etel 'magic' still works!

Location

From the Owner

In the summer of 1987 we put a pin into the page of a travel brochure and ended up in a rented house in Etel. We arrived on August 15th, the 'Fete de La Riviere' when the lifeboat goes out to the open sea and the Mayor puts a wreath on the water to remember all those fishermen who had lost their lives at sea. We loved the tradition, we saw the potential of the inner lagoon for our (hoped for) grand children's safety. Etel was the 'right' size and reminded me of the south coast seaside town where I grew up. We still don't know how it happened but we returned home having put a (non-refundable) deposit on the house. Our son tells us we had 'vision' and continually thanks us for it..So we must have done something right!

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The nearest beach is within a 10 minute walk. This safe seawater lagoon surrounded by a sandy beach with swings and traditional roundabout, is ideal for younger or less confident swimmers. Running east from Etel, within 10 minutes drive, are white sandy beaches for rock pooling, swimming and wind-surfing. The Quiberon Peninsula is spectacular and a hunting ground for sweet, flat, oysters at low tide. All along this coastline the flora and fauna flourish. A paradise for bird watchers.

Travel:

Lorient airport is 45 minutes drive away. UK flights go via Paris. Brest Airport offers direct flights from UK Regional Airports. There are also airports at Nantes (2hrs) and Rennes (2hrs). Car hire from any airport is essential. Roscoff and St.Malo are within 2hrs 30 mins drive, Caen 3hrs 30 mins. Cherbourg is 4 hrs away. From the Channel Tunnel allow a good 7 hours. The TGV from Paris to Auray takes about 3 hours. French roads are less crowded at weekends as most lorries are off the roads.

Distances:

Auray (20 mins by car) is the nearest large town with it's vibrant Monday Market and ancient port of St.Goustan. Vannes, the 'county town' of Morbihan is 30 mins to the east and the cathedral city of Quimper is 1hr+ to the west. Both have large stores, museums and art galleries. Locally, visitors enjoy the Standing Stones at Carnac (think Asterix) and reconstructed Breton villages and eco-musees. Etel has it's own Musee des Thoniers and the old lifeboat takes visitors out on the Riviere d'Etel.

Further Details:

Etel has the usual range of banks, chemists, hairdressers, boutiques, paper shops and a Post Office. The Cooperative Maritime sells Breton delicacies, fishing gear and some very classy nautical wear.

Etel also has 3 bread shops, a scrummy cake shop, two fish shops and well stocked 'Carrefour' supermarket which is about a 10 minute walk. A huge 'Super U' is a 3 minute car ride at Belz and a large 'Intermarche' is at Erdeven. Across the road from the house, the local farm sells fresh veg (Bio) and poultry.

Tuesdays there is a market in the main street and on Friday night, in season, a 'marche nocturn' on the quay. On two days a week fish caught by small boats is sold outside the Carrefour. Sometimes a Tuna fishing boat sells whole Tuna on the quay.

In response to the growing number of tourists in and out of season, more restaurants and bars have opened, some facing the quay where many a happy evening can be spent watching the sun sink over the Riviere d'Etel whilst eating moules-frites or langustines. And all within walking distance of the house!

For the more energetic there is surfing and land yachting hire and tuition at nearby Plouharnel and there is a riding school and stables at Erdeven. A Large Go-Kart track is 5 minutes by car and an 'adventure' park with high tree walks is at Carnac. The tennis courts for public hire are down the road from the house (4 racquets are there for your use) and in the mornings the lagoon is taken over by the Centre Nautique for sailing and windsurfing lessons for the children. These can be booked in advance on the internet.

During the season various posters will appear advertising local 'Fetes', a visit from the Circus, or the Punch and Judy Show. There are Flea Markets and more up-market, Brocante and Antiquites. The local Football Club and the Lifeboat Association offer evening meals of sardines-frites or moules-frites in the large shed once used to gut and pack fresh fish.Musical entertainment may be an added bonus.

Facilities

From the Owner

We always come back to a welcome from neighbours and the friends we have made over the years. We love being able to walk down to the town, choose a restaurant and enjoy a meal out, knowing that home is but a walk away. We enjoy being able to buy a range of fresh local produce and prepare a meal at home and then sit before a log fire with a glass of wine. In the early mornings we walk our new Labrador,Buddy,on the dunes where he loves to chase the rabbits! Later we might take the path behind the house and over the river to the water-mill and the forest. When we have the family with us we all enjoy fishing for mussels, oysters and clams or just playing in the rock pools at low tide and building sand castles. And we sleep so well.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The house has hot water radiators heated by a gas boiler, extra electric heaters are available and visitors can light a log fire. For those who enjoy buying local produce and cooking there are English recipe books and a wide range of cooking utensils. We always try to leave the basics like condiments, oils, sugar, tea and coffee hoping that anything that runs out will be replaced for the benefit of the next guests. The house is friendly, easy to live in, and there is enough space for children to play and adults to enjoy a little peace and quiet! Etel is a small town and with so much to do, within walking distance, (including the Boulangerie for breakfast croissants) it offers youngsters a degree of independence that they might not be able to have at home. Six of our eight grand children have now learned to sail on the lagoon and two have progressed to the large 'cats' on the river. We hope that our visitors will enjoy the house as we do and take home many happy memories. Outside: The garden at the rear of the house is mainly grass with flower borders, some herbs and mature fruit trees. We provide tables and 6 chairs, two sun-loungers and a simple BBQ. At the front of the house there is also space to sit out in the evening sunshine. One garden wall is quite low and would not contain a lively dog. Upon receipt of an enquiry, we always send prospective visitors (by email as an attachment) a series of colour slides of the local area. Utility Room: Tiled floor. Small table top electric oven, washing machine, one large fridge-freezer and one smaller fridge. Overhead clothes airer. Ironing board, iron. This room adjoins the dining room. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels are not provided. All beds have duvets, fleece-blankets and oblong (UK) pillows. Visitors are expected to clean the house before they leave. If you wish you may arrange with our caretaker for the cleaning to be done after you leave. Other: Large dining room with tiled floor. Glass double doors leading out to garden at rear of house. Table to seat 6-8, bookshelves, settee, easy chair and toy corner. Two babies' high chairs.
