Self-Contained 17th Century Mill

Overview

Property

Updated: 28-Nov-2016
Converted Water Mill Cottage in Braunton, near Barnstaple, North Devon - Close to Braunton Village Centre

Mill cottage, being attached to our home known as Iron Mills, was formerly a working Mill. The cottage, which is the original building, dates back to the 17th century and still retains a rotating mill wheel which was completely refurbished last year. The cottage is attached to our main house and we are situated in the older part of the village which has retained much of its original charm. The garden borders the River Caen, which meanders through Braunton village and out into the Taw & Torridge estuary. Just across the river is the beautiful 13th Century church of St.Brannock. Just a five-minute walk into the village centre, you will find a variety of pubs, restaurants, cafes and surf shops. We operate a non-smoking policy throughout the cottage.

Wonderful Mill Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We have been visiting this delightful cottage for at least once a year for the last seven years and every visit is better than the last! Carol and Ben are wonderful hosts who are constantly upgrading and improving this immaculate cottage and its facilities. From the moment one arrives to the sad instant of leaving, whether sitting in the cottage's own garden or listening to the gentle burble of the mill wheel in the mill race, everything is so restful and relaxing-a tribute to the hard work that must go on behind the scenes. We cannot recommend this cottage highly enough, it is as near perfection as you will find! ps. Carol and Ben's daughter, Emma Rose has a superb beauty salon in the main house which Gail praises to the sky. All in all a straight ten out of ten, and we cannot wait for our next visit in September.

Great

  • 5 of 5

This has been our third visit to mill cottage. My daughter and myself love the cottage... It is spotlessly clean and it has everything we need. We are in walking distance of the village with lovely restaurants, pubs and shops. Crow point a short 5 minute drive away is loved by dexter our dog along with other lovely beaches and places to visit. Carole and Ben make us really welcome and emma'S beauty treatments are an extra bonus. We have booked again to go back in September.

Lovely Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed a couple of times and each visit we've had a great stay. The cottage is so comfy and spotlessly clean and has everything you need for your holiday. It's in a great location and we enjoyed being in the heart of Braunton and within walking distance from all the local shops and places to eat. There is plenty to do in the area and is a 10 minute drive to the fantastic beaches and also nearby is the Tarka Trail where we have enjoyed cycling to Barnstable. We always have a relaxing holiday and look forward to returning again soon. David & Freda, Surrey.

Brilliant Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Another great holiday at Mill Cottage. This is a fantastic 17th Century cottage with a working water wheel. The wheel was under renovation on this visit but we've seen it working many times before and can't wait to visit again to see how it looks following repair. This is a really quaint cottage with all the facilities you would expect. It's located in a lovely village, everything in easy walking distance and you don't have to drive anywhere, unless you want to, as it's all close by. Weather was brilliant for our week which meant we could spend time relaxing in the garden, which is specially kept for cottage visitors, listening to the river flowing and watching the birds of prey flying around high in the sky. The owners are attentive and live in the house attached to the cottage. The whole property is well kept. We really can't wait to go back.

Lovely Mill Cottage

  • 4 of 5

The three of us spent a great week staying at the lovely Mill Cottage and sea kayaking. The cottage has a quaint character and the water wheel was operational and rotating.

The facilities were more than adequate - I couldn't disagree with the previous review more strongly. In particular the bedrooms, living / dining room and the shower room were as very nice, the later was perfect for a great shower after a day on the sea.

The mill is only 5 minutes walk from Braunton centre and nice and central for the surrounding beaches. Although it is fairly close to the road to Ilfracombe we didn't even hear the traffic.

We really enjoyed our stay and the owner who lives next door was very friendly and helpful - we'd certainly stay there again.
